Title of the Lesson: Periodic Motion

Directions/Instructions:
1. You are encouraged to use a calculator (i.e. scientific calculator) in solving.
2. If the spaces provided are not enough, you may write and show your solutions on
another sheet/s of paper.
3. The activities presented here will help you in the attainment of the learning
competencies. Read every instruction and do each activity with understanding.

Activity Proper:
Activity No. 1 – Periodic Motion: Problem Solving

Periodic Motion
Example problem with solution:
A pendulum is observed to complete 23 full cycles in 58 seconds. Determine
the period and the frequency of the pendulum.

Solution and Answer:

The frequency can be thought of as the number of cycles per second.
Calculating frequency involves dividing the stated number of cycles by the
corresponding amount of time required to complete these cycles. In contrast, the
period is the time to complete a cycle. Period is calculated by dividing the given time
by the number of cycles completed in this amount of time.
𝑓𝑟𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑦 = 23 cycles/58 seconds = 0.39655 Hz = ~0.40 Hz
𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑜𝑑 = 58 seconds/23 cycles = 2.5217 sec = ~2.5 s

1. Jerome and Claire are doing the Period of a Pendulum Lab. They observe that a
pendulum makes exactly 10 complete back and forth cycles of motion in 21.8
seconds. Determine the period of the pendulum.

Show your solution and answer for the period of the pendulum.

2. An ultrasonic transducer used for medical diagnosis oscillates at 6 MHz = 6.7 ×

106 Hz. How long does each oscillation take, and what is the angular frequency?

Show your solution and answer for the period of the ultrasonic transducer
and its angular frequency.

Simple Harmonic Motion. Directions: Solve the following problems involving simple
harmonic motion. Do not forget to set your calculator into RAD mode.

Example problem with solution:

A 200-g block connected to a light spring for which the force constant is 5.00
N/m is free to oscillate on a horizontal, frictionless surface. The block is displaced
5.00 cm from equilibrium and released from rest, as in the figure below.

a. Find the period of its motion.

Solution and Answer:
Compute for the angular frequency first:

and the period is:

b. Determine the maximum speed of the block.

Solution and Answer:

c. What is the maximum acceleration of the block?

Solution and Answer:

d. Express the position, speed, and acceleration as functions of time.

Solution and Answer:

We find the phase constant from the initial condition that 𝑥 = 𝐴 at 𝑡 = 0:
𝑥(0) = 𝐴 cos 𝜙 = 𝐴
which tells us that 𝜙 = 0. Thus, our solution is 𝑥 = 𝐴 cos 𝜙. Using this
expression and the results from a, b, and c, we find that:

3. In an engine, a piston oscillates with simple harmonic motion so that its position
varies according to the expression
𝜋
𝑥 = 5.00 cos (2𝑡 + )

where x is in centimeters and t is in seconds.

At 𝒕 = 𝟎, find the following:

a. the position of the particle, x,
b. its velocity, v,
Hint: Differentiate the given equation for x OR use the equation of v from the
discussion above, first then substitute 𝑡 = 0.
c. its acceleration, a,
Hint: Differentiate the obtained equation for v OR use the equation of q from the
discussion above, first then substitute 𝑡 = 0.
d. the period, T, and
e. the amplitude, A of the motion.
Hint: No need to compute, just compare the equation of the displacement for SHM
and the given equation in this problem, then identify the value of A.
