Competency Performance Checklist

Perineal Flushing and Shaving

A procedure performed before birth in order to lessen the risk of infection if there is a
spontaneous perineal tear or if an episiotomy is performed

Purposes : prevents infection


Skin irritation
Prevents bad odor
Prep-delivery or other procedure such catheterization

1. Explains the procedure to the patient


2. Prepares the materials needed
a. Bedpan
b. Flushing tray with the following:
- Jar of cotton balls
- Flushing pitcher tepid water
- Emesis basin lined with paper
- Pick up forceps in antiseptic solution
- Disposable shaver
- Soap solution
- Antiseptic solution
c. Rubber protector
3. Provides privacy by placing screens.
4. Washes hands.
5. Loose the top sheet
6. Places patient in a dorsal recumbent
position and does diamond draping, does
glowing technique.
7. Places rubber protector and bed pan.
8. Pour soap solution over vulva and lather.
9. Stretcher skin rightly while shaving.
10. Observes shaving according to direction
of hair growth.
11. Shaves from mons pubis down to the
labia.
12. Gets forceps and starts cleaning the area
with gentle down strokes top to bottom.
13. Applies figure of seven in cleaning the
vulva.
14. Dries vulva thoroughly.
15. Removes bed pan and rubber protector,
removes gloves.
16. Reposition patient to a comfortable
position and fixes the linen.
17. Evaluates patients reaction.
18. Does after care of the materials.
