Step #1: Make A Decision (CHOOSE)

The most successful people in the world make fast decisions (even if
they are the wrong ones)...

But decision paralysis is REAL...

And making fast decisions is even harder when your inner critic starts
putting doubts and fears in your head, convincing you that you’re
“not ready.”

But remember…

Ready is not a feeling, it’s a decision.

The first step is to simply CHOOSE to start.

Complete the following statement…

In the past, I was afraid to start because…

But NOW, I’m ready to make a radically aligned decision for my

future self and write my own damn story!

Step #2: Find A Mentor (COMMIT)

The second step to building your copywriting business is to COMMIT

to a mentor.

DO NOT TRY TO LEARN FROM EVERYONE IN THE BEGINNING.

There is more than one path to success, and one does not negate the
other, but if you try to learn ALL the things from ALL the experts –
you’re just going to confuse yourself.

The best thing you can do to fast-track your success is to commit to

ONE mentor – follow ONE path – and go for it.

Then, AFTER you’ve gotten the foundational skills down – you can
start to expand your skill set and learn different topics and strategies
from other people… go deep, then go broad.

But, finding a mentor does NOT mean you are outsourcing your
power, goals or growth. Above all else, you must COMMIT to yourself
and take full responsibility for your journey!

A mentor is a great guide, but never forget that you are the MAIN
CHARACTER of your own story.

Step #3: Invest In Yourself (COURAGE)

Change doesn’t happen because you magically wish for it to happen.

If you want your life to change, you have to invest in yourself.

I’m not only talking about money…

You also need to invest your time, energy and effort.

In other words… start taking serious action.

Lack of action is why most people never achieve their dreams or

aspirations. And why is that?

Because taking action and stepping into the unknown is terrifying.

But remember: it only takes one moment of courage to change the

course of your life…

Remember – courage comes before confidence. That’s why the third

step is having the COURAGE to invest in yourself.

Step #4: Grow Your Skills (CULTIVATE)

If you want to be a copywriter, you have to CULTIVATE the skill of

copywriting.

You have to learn…

You have to start somewhere…
You have to be a beginner before you can be an expert…

And yes – you will probably suck at first. Everyone sucks at first. Give
yourself permission to suck.

Here are some ways you can start cultivating your skills:

Write something every single day.

Copy, poems, blogs, journals, anything counts!
Get feedback on what you write.
Study emails, ads and sales pages you see.
Put yourself in the customer’s shoes – ask yourself if the
copy makes sense and is persuasive.
Put yourself in the marketer’s shoes – ask yourself what is
the hook, angle and offer.
Practice writing hooks.
Tip – I post practice posts all the time on my Instagram
account.
Focus on learning high-revenue assets.
Sales pages, emails, ads and landing pages.
Take a practical copywriting program.

Step #5: Build Your Portfolio (CAPABILITY)

In order to be a successful copywriter…

You DON’T need formal education…

You DON’T need previous writing experience…

HOT TIP: Remember to be
honest and 100%
You DON’T need an impressive resume…
transparent about
everything in your portfolio.
You DON’T need a massive social presence. If you weren’t hired to write
something, say that!
But you DO need a portfolio.

Your portfolio is everything when it comes to copywriting. Without

one, you’re going to have a very hard time finding anyone willing to
hire you.

The fifth step is to showcase your CAPABILITY in a copywriter

portfolio.

Ways to start building your portfolio:

Write for friends and family.

Start a blog (this is a great way to showcase your personality).
Rewrite your dream client’s copy.
Write mock ads, headlines and emails.
Write guest posts on authority sites like Medium.com.
Volunteer your time writing for a cause you care about.
Take a practical copywriting program.

Step #6: Find Your First Client (CLAIM)

You could learn all the skills, practice all day and build an awesome
portfolio, but if you don’t put yourself out there, you won’t get very far.

The sixth step is to CLAIM your new career path.

This does NOT necessarily mean you feel confident. It means that
you’re willing to tell the world WHO you are and WHAT you’re up to.

How to find your first client:

Let people know you started a copywriting business.

Tell the world WHO you are and WHAT you’re up to.
Talk about it on social media (make posts & show up on
stories).
Reach out to the business owners you know and offer a free
copy critique.
Start networking and building professional connections.
Join copywriter groups and online communities – engage
and be genuinely helpful.
Make a list of 50 or more businesses you’d love to work for...
Follow them on social media.
Sign up for their email lists.
Keep a close eye on what they post about.
Reach out as soon as they post an opening or you see
another opportunity to help.
Search and apply for jobs. Here are places you can look:
Upwork, Fiverr, Freelancer, LinkedIn, Indeed, Monster

Step #7: Gain Experience (CONFIDENCE)
You get a client…

You improve your skills…

You perfect your portfolio…

Lather, rinse, repeat.

Repeat this cycle over and over again.

The seventh step is to gain CONFIDENCE through experience.

This process could be as slow or as fast as you want it.

There are plenty of opportunities and different paths you can take as
you build your experience and gain more confidence…

Ways to gain more experience:

Go all in and make freelance copywriting your full-time

business.
Do it part-time as a side hustle while you pursue other
passions, work a 9-5 or parent full-time.
Apply for a job with an agency or as an in-house copywriter
for a business to start your career.
Get a position (full-time, part-time, freelance or employment)
in a role related to copywriting, like content writing, social
media management or community management as a way
to get your foot in the door.

Step #8: Design Your Life (CREATE)

As your experience, confidence and referrals grow, something really

amazing starts to happen…

You realize that YOU have complete and total control over the way
your life looks and feels.

You can say “no” to clients that don’t feel good…

You can TRADE UP your clients, raise your rates and negotiate
retainers and commissions…

You get to decide how, when and where you work.

You get to decide which projects you’ll take and which you’ll pass on.

This is when you get to consciously create the life you’ve always
wanted.

It doesn’t happen right away. You have to go through steps 1-7 first.

You need to learn the skill, practice it, find clients, hone your skills,
and gain more confidence BEFORE you get to this place.

But I can tell you for a fact that you get to step #8 very quickly if
you’re dedicated to this roadmap.

I have students who go from making $1K a month to well over 6

figures in as little as ONE YEAR after taking my 8-week copywriting
