DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING & SURVEYING

EARTHWORKS – CLASS EXERCISE 10

DUE DATE AND TIME:

Question 1
Below are co-ordinates and heights of survey stations A and B:

Co-ordinates Lo 19
Station Spot height
Y Co-ord X Co-ord

A 19.06 - 76 170.000 +3 759 570.000

B 20.69 - 76 350.000 +3 759 520.000

The following Spot height were taken from:

From Station A:

Spot Height Distance Direction

19.92 80 180.000°

19.68 72 236.000°

19.72 85 291.000°

From Station B:

Spot Height Distance Direction

20.47 57 135.000°

20.42 54 22.000°

20.96 98 336.000°

1. Topographical layout plan

(a) At a scale of 1:1000 draw gridlines at 50m intervals. Assign co-ordinates to all
grid lines.
(b) Plot the survey stations and spot heights. Interpolate contours at 0.25m intervals.
Draw the contours neatly and indicate their heights on plan.
(c) Print the scale and indicate the direction of North by means of a North sign.

(d) Indicate this centerline on the topographical layout plan with all the stake values
from START to END

1
2. Long-section
(a) Plot a road long-section from Station A (Start of road) to Station B 20.69 (End
of road) showing the ground profile and the formation level profile. The formation
level at Start of road is 20.800.
(b) Plot all natural ground levels
(c) Calculate and plot the formation levels given that the centreline gradient is -
0.786%
(d) Calculate and plot:
 Cut/ Fill. The side slopes on both sides is 1:1.0
 Cross – sectional area if the roadbed width is 7.4m
 Cumulative volumes
(e) Use a scale of 1:1000 for horizontal scale and 1:100 for vertical scale.
(f) Indicate the datum level and scales used on the plan.

3. Mass Haul Diagram

(a) Plot the Mass Haul Diagram. Select a suitable scale for the diagram
(b) Calculate the following and show your answers on your plan.
1. Freehaul Volume
2. Overhal Haul Volume
3. Overhaul Distance
(c) Freehaul distance is 80m
