This chapter deals with the methods and procedures used in this research, the
respondents of the survey, the data gathering tools and the data gathering procedures.
Research Design
This research study used the descriptive research design. This design was
useful to: (1) identify the typologies of disputes filed in the barangay; (2) identify the
degree of occurrence of disputes in the barangay; (3) identify the major causes of these
disputes and their level of frequency; (4) identify the strategies utilized by the Lupong
Tagapamayapa in mediating disputes in the barangay; and (5) determine how effective
are the strategies utilized by the Lupong Tagapamayapa in resolving disputes and
averting violence.
The population target in this study was the Lupong Tagapamayapa specifically
District I, District II, District III, San Fermin, Tagaran, and Turayong. There were 10
Lupon members in each barangay and for purposes of this study, the researcher
included not only the Lupon members but also the Lupon Chairman and the Lupon
Secretary. Therefore, there was a total of 12 respondents in each barangay which was
equivalent to 96 respondents.

The survey questionnaire was divided into three (3) parts: Part I was designed
to gather specific responses on typologies of disputes filed in the barangay and its
level of frequency; Part II was designed to gather specific responses on major causes
of these disputes; and Part III was designed to gather specific responses on strategies
utilized by the Lupong Tagapamayapa in resolving disputes and averting violence and
its level of effectiveness. Total enumeration was employed to obtain data and
information from the respondents. The data were analyzed using Likert Scale.
The researcher obtained the specific information from the respondents through
the use of questionnaires to assess the Barangay Justice System in Poblacion, Cauayan
City, Isabela.
The questionnaire consisted of three (3) parts. The first part was designed to
identify the typology of disputes filed in the barangay and show its degree of
occurrence and level of frequency. The second part was designed to identify the major
causes of these disputes and show its degree of occurrence and level of frequency. The
third part was designed to identify the strategies utilized by the Lupong
Tagapamayapa in resolving disputes and averting violence and assess its level of
effectiveness.

For better understanding of the results of the study, all data were gathered and
statistically treated using certain simple statistical tools and formulas. The statistical
treatment is necessary to find the natural tendencies, means of evaluation and the
important area of statistics that deals with the number of occurrence and
2. Percentage. This was also taken from each category after the mean had
sum with the total number of respondents then the result was multiplied
with one hundred. This statistical tool was utilized in statistically treating
3. Weighted Mean. It was used to indicate the point of concentration per item
because it is more reliable and easily understood. This tool was used in
4. The Likert Scale. This study utilized the Likert Scale method to determine
the degree of extent of the study variables. This is the criterion which
served as a basis for interpreting the results from the concept of boundary
of numerals. The reference of the Likert Scale used in this study was cited
