Control Valves

1
Control Valves
• Used to regulate the pressure (pressure regulating), direct the path (direction
control) and control the speed (flow control) of a fluid by opening, closing or
partially blocking fluid passageways.

• Control valves
• Direction Control Valve (DCV)
• Pressure Regulating Valve (PRV)
• Flow Control Valve (FCV)

2
Direction Control Valves (DCV)

• Check valve: simplest type of DCV

• Allows flow in one direction and

blocks in reverse direction.

• It is analogous to a diode in an
electrical circuit.

3
Pilot Operated Check Valve

• Acts as a check valve (i.e. allowing

in one direction and blocking the
other way) but it start to allow in
the blocking direction if pilot
pressure is applied.

• Transistor analogy

4
DCV Actuation/ Return Mechanisms

• Actuation: Changing working

position of valves.

2-postion, 4-port, lever actuated, spring return dcv

5
Pressure Regulating Valves

• Pressure Relief Valve: it is the most used and

every fluid circuit should have. It is adjusted
Fixed
to some specific value so, beyond that setting
the fluid flows back to the tank or released to
atmosphere (incase of pneumatic system).
Adjustable

6
Compound Pressure Relief Valve
• The advantages of compound relief valve over simple
relief valve are

• Compound relief valves are usually smaller than the

simple relief valves for the same flow and pressure
ratings. And wider range of maximum pressure
setting.

• Can be operated remotely by connecting a simple

relief valve to the vent port

7
• Pressure Reducing Valve: Reduce pressure
for some part of a circuit, it uses down
stream flow for pilot actuation

• Unloading Valves: Reduces

pressure for a pump operating
without maximum horse power.

8
Sequence Valve: Helps more than one
actuators to work sequentially. After one
device finished working the other will
continue.

Counter Balance: Incase of vertical linear

actuator (cylinder) Supports a weight not to
be descent by gravity.

9
Flow Control Valves
Controls the fluid flow rate in a circuit. Flow control valves can
One way Two way
be one direction or two

Since, flow rate of fluid depend on the pressure difference, the flow control valves further classified into
pressure compensated and non-pressure compensated.
Pressure compensated: for an actuator with its’ load changes significantly, system pressure also changes,
this will affect the flow rate of the fluid. A hydrostat that maintains 20psi differential across the throttle
will be installed.
Non-pressure Compensated: used for system with relatively constant pressure and monitoring flow not
critical.
10
Logic Valves
• Shuttle/ OR Valve: Allows fluid from higher
pressure source to pass. This helps a system to
operate from two pressure sources incase the main
pressure source unable to provide pressure. The
main source biased with a spring.
• AND Valve: to get an output both inputs should
be present and equal. Systems where equal pressures
required.
