SNC1D PHYSICS: CHARACTERISTICS OF ELECTRICITY

OHM’S LAW is the relationship between Voltage and Current, taking into account the resistance of the current

RESISTANCE is a measure of the circuit’s ability to slow down the flow of electrons.

EQUATION WHERE
V is the voltage measured in Volts (V)
V= R X I

I is the current measured in Amps (A)

R is the resistance measured in Ohms (Ω)

Example #1: What is the voltage drop for a light bulb that draws 20 A of current and has a resistance of 10 Ω?

GIVEN: UNKNOWN: EQUATION:

I= 20 V= ? RXI
Ω= 10

SUBSTITUTE: SOLVE: STATEMENT:

10 X 20 V= 40 Therefore, the voltage is 40V

Example #2: What is the resistance of a kettle that when plugged into the wall (120 V) draws 12 A of current?

GIVEN: UNKNOWN: EQUATION:

V= 120 Ω= ? V/I
I= 12

SUBSTITUTE: SOLVE: STATEMENT:

120/12 Ω= 10 Therefore, the resistance is 10Ω

PRACTICE: Complete each chart to determine the unknown value.

1. GIVEN: UNKNOWN: EQUATION:

I = 5.0 A V=? RXI
R = 20 Ω

SUBSTITUTE: SOLVE: STATEMENT:

20 X 5.0 V = 100 Therefore, the voltage is 100V

2. GIVEN: UNKNOWN: EQUATION:

V = 3.0 V I=? V/R
R = 15 Ω

SUBSTITUTE: SOLVE: STATEMENT:

3.0/15 I = 0.2 Therefore, the current is 0.2I

3. GIVEN: UNKNOWN: EQUATION:

V = 12.5 V R=? V/I
I = 2.5 A

SUBSTITUTE: SOLVE: STATEMENT:

12.5/2.5 R=5 Therefore, the resistance is 5Ω

4. GIVEN: UNKNOWN: EQUATION:

V = 6.0 V I=? V/R
R = 100 Ω

SUBSTITUTE: SOLVE: STATEMENT:

6.0/100 I = 0.06 Therefore the current is 0.06I

5. GIVEN: UNKNOWN: EQUATION:

I = 0.150 A V=? RXI
R = 50 Ω

SUBSTITUTE: SOLVE: STATEMENT:

50 X 0.150 V = 7.5 Therefore, the voltage is 7.5V

6. GIVEN: UNKNOWN: EQUATION:

V=3V R=? V/I
I = 0.45 A

SUBSTITUTE: SOLVE: STATEMENT:

3/0.45 R = 6.66 Therefore, the resistance is 6.66 Ω
