In modern times, the development of
tourism in Greece began in the 1960s and
1970s. The 2004 Summer Olympic Games
held in the capital city of Athens gave a
particular boost to this growth rate.
However, the financial and economic crisis
experienced in the country in recent years
had a negative impact on the tourism sector.
In 2007, 19 million tourists came
to the country with a population
of 11 million, but in 2008, when
the crisis began, this number
decreased to 17.5 million.
