LESSON

Lesson 2: Characteristics of a Well-fitted Children’s Wear

Selection
When choosing clothes for young children, the physical characteristics and comfort
they offer the children are often taken into account by toddlers and preschoolers.

A. Toddlers
1. Look for soft, unstructured styles, such as one-piece garments that fall from the
shoulder, that allow maximum freedom of movement. These are also practical
because toddlers have not developed a waistline and wear diapers.
2. Leg openings on toddlers' pants with snaps help make it easier to change
diapers.

3. Pick collarless models or flat collars, such as Peter's pan and convertible collars,
for necklines.

4. Avoid collars, such as a high button collar, that can attach or limit movement.

5. Pull-on garments with wide neck and armhole openings are the easiest to exploit
when toddlers are first learning to dress. This is because the toddler is still on the
move.

6. As well as decorative, design features should be practical. Shoulder belts, for

instance, can criss-cross the back to keep them from falling off the shoulders.
7. Another way to protect straps is using shoulder tabs on shirts.

4
B. Pre Schoolers

1. Look for styles that allow preschoolers to freely run and jump around.
2. Pockets are valuable characteristics because the treasures they find require
places for preschoolers.

3. Shoulder tabs are also valuable on shirts.

4. Avoid buttoned cuffs that limit mobility when choosing a garment with long
sleeves.

5. Jumpsuits are functional pre-school garments because they allow mobility and
retain a tidy appearance.
6. Preschoolers can also wear pants and skirts with elasticized waists because
their waistlines have become more defined.

SPECIAL FEATURES

A. Growth features - are important because children grow rapidly.

In height, children tend to develop faster than in width; the length of the waist,
arms , and legs would also shift faster than the width of the shoulders, chest, and
hips. Select clothing that enables growth to occur. Look for features such as
waistline-free one-piece clothing; raglan, kimono, or sleeveless designs; shoulder
straps that are adjustable; and elasticated waistlines. It will also make space for
growth for two-piece outfits and wrap styles.

To promote self-dressing and prevent bathroom accidents, closures should be on

the front of garments so children can see the fasteners and manipulate them easily.
Select or adapt closures that are easy for young children to manipulate.

1. Zippers can be easy for a child to operate if a charm or string is added to the
pull-tab.

2. Buttons that are large or have a shank are easier to grasp.

Many types of decorative buttons are available to add interest to children’s clothing.
Avoid buttons with irregular edges as these are more difficult than smooth, round
buttons to manipulate.

5
3. Hook and loop fastener tape is easy to manipulate and can be used in place of
buttons or snaps. It is available by the centimeter or inch, in pre-cut shapes, and
in a variety of colors.

4. Gripper snaps are easier to manipulate than regular snaps.

5. Safety features should also be considered when selecting clothing for children.
Avoid styles with long, flowing skirts; tie belts; drawstrings; or very full sleeves that
may cause children to trip or get tangled.
