INTRODUCTION
Five decades into hip-hop’s existence, it’s now routine for rappers to
die sickeningly young, often just as their careers are taking off, like
casualties of some cruel motif of Greek drama. The hazards of the
trade are many, none perhaps as persistent as gun violence and
drugs, which have stamped out some of the genre’s brightest-
burning flames. Mac Miller, born Malcolm McCormick, was one.
McCormick chose to get better, and did. His beats turned more
complex, his lyrics more unsettling. Even his cadences changed,
taking on a lilt and mumble here, a songwriter’s soulfulness there.
CHAPTER 1: Life and Career
Miller spoke openly about his struggle with substance abuse and
depression. Miller was taking drugs daily, and felt that the final track
on Faces, "Grand Finale", was "supposed to be the last song [he]
made on Earth." Recounting that period to Billboard in August 2015,
Miller was "definitely way healthier" but not "completely" sober.
After stating he "hated" being sober in a February 2016
documentary, Miller had become sober for three months by October
2016, noting his better mood and maintained creativity.
1.3 Death
2.1 Awards
In 2010, Mac Miller won two awards at the Pittsburgh hip hop
awards. His first album ‘Blue Slide Park’ was the first independently
distributed debut to stand in the number one spot since The Dogg
Pound’s 1995 album ‘Dogg Food’. While most of his mixed tapes and
albums were commercial success, his first album remains his major
work.
2.2 Nominations
The 64th GRAMMY Awards, that took place in 2022, have recognized
Mac’s work in a more obscure category with his Swimming In Circles
box set being nominated in the Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition
Package category.
Mac Miller has received only one other GRAMMY nomination in his
career, and that was for his 2018 album Swimming (for Best Rap
Album).
CONCLUSION
The 26-year-old rapper and producer built a loyal fanbase from the
ground up. And while Miller launched his career with a critically
panned "frat rap persona," his easy charm and buoyant lyricism won
him early votes of confidence from his peers.
Following his death, those peers have paid tribute to Miller — and in
doing so, unanimously illustrated his sweeping positive influence.
He made a quantum leap in his music. That’s incredibly hard to do, to
evolve and get better and more focused while your career is already
underway. You don’t get there without a lot of work, and Mac had
put the work in.
