INTRODUCTION

Five decades into hip-hop’s existence, it’s now routine for rappers to
die sickeningly young, often just as their careers are taking off, like
casualties of some cruel motif of Greek drama. The hazards of the
trade are many, none perhaps as persistent as gun violence and
drugs, which have stamped out some of the genre’s brightest-
burning flames. Mac Miller, born Malcolm McCormick, was one.

Mac’s rise wasn’t uncommon in an industry that grooms its talent

young, but it was remarkable nonetheless. His output included six
studio albums, all of which debuted among the Billboard top five,
plus a dozen or so mixtapes, four of them released before his high
school graduation. He became a millionaire before he could buy a
drink, founded a record label, starred in his own reality series and
commanded an exceptionally loyal following before he was found
dead from an overdose in 2018. He was 26.

McCormick chose to get better, and did. His beats turned more
complex, his lyrics more unsettling. Even his cadences changed,
taking on a lilt and mumble here, a songwriter’s soulfulness there.
CHAPTER 1: Life and Career

1.1 Early Life and Career Beginnings

Malcolm James McCormick was born on January 19, 1992, in the

Point Breeze neighborhood of Pittsburgh. He was the son of Karen
Meyers, a photographer, and Mark McCormick, an architect, and had
an older brother, Miller.

A self-taught musician, Miller played piano, guitar, drums, and bass

by the age of six. He first started rapping at the age of fourteen.
Before that, he wanted to be a singer. In high school, he decided to
focus on his rap career. He originally went by the name Easy Mac
(often stylized as EZ Mac) and released the mixtape “But My Mackin'
Ain't Easy” in 2007 at the age of fifteen. By 2009, he established
himself as Mac Miller, and released two mixtapes: “The Jukebox:
Prelude to Class Clown” and “The High Life”.

1.2 Personal Life

Miller spoke openly about his struggle with substance abuse and
depression. Miller was taking drugs daily, and felt that the final track
on Faces, "Grand Finale", was "supposed to be the last song [he]
made on Earth." Recounting that period to Billboard in August 2015,
Miller was "definitely way healthier" but not "completely" sober.
After stating he "hated" being sober in a February 2016
documentary, Miller had become sober for three months by October
2016, noting his better mood and maintained creativity.

Miller was in an on-again, off-again relationship with writer Nomi

Leasure, whom he met in middle school, for seven years until 2016.
Many of the songs on his mixtape Macadelic were about their
relationship. Miller dated singer Ariana Grande from August 2016 to
May 2018.

1.3 Death

On September 7, 2018, Miller was found unresponsive in his Studio

City home by his personal assistant, who called 911 and performed
CPR until paramedics arrived. Miller was pronounced dead at the
scene at 11:51 a.m. (PDT). On November 5, 2018, the Los Angeles
County Coroner's office determined that Miller died from an
accidental drug overdose due to a "mixed drug toxicity" of fentanyl,
cocaine, and alcohol.

Thousands of fans held a vigil for Miller on September 11, 2018, at

Pittsburgh's Blue Slide Park, the inspiration behind his debut album
title; the site continues to be a place of remembrance. A tribute
concert, Mac Miller: A Celebration of Life, took place on October 31,
2018, in Los Angeles.
CHAPTER 2: Awards and Nominations

2.1 Awards

In 2010, Mac Miller won two awards at the Pittsburgh hip hop
awards. His first album ‘Blue Slide Park’ was the first independently
distributed debut to stand in the number one spot since The Dogg
Pound’s 1995 album ‘Dogg Food’. While most of his mixed tapes and
albums were commercial success, his first album remains his major
work.

2.2 Nominations

The 64th GRAMMY Awards, that took place in 2022, have recognized
Mac’s work in a more obscure category with his Swimming In Circles
box set being nominated in the Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition
Package category.

Mac Miller has received only one other GRAMMY nomination in his
career, and that was for his 2018 album Swimming (for Best Rap
Album).
CONCLUSION

He became a millionaire before he could buy a drink, founded a

record label, starred in his own reality series and commanded an
exceptionally loyal following before he was found dead.

The 26-year-old rapper and producer built a loyal fanbase from the
ground up. And while Miller launched his career with a critically
panned "frat rap persona," his easy charm and buoyant lyricism won
him early votes of confidence from his peers.

Following his death, those peers have paid tribute to Miller — and in
doing so, unanimously illustrated his sweeping positive influence.
He made a quantum leap in his music. That’s incredibly hard to do, to
evolve and get better and more focused while your career is already
underway. You don’t get there without a lot of work, and Mac had
put the work in.

Miller's influence was widespread and appears overwhelmingly

positive — and his fans also expressed devastation in the wake of his
death. Many were even inspired to slam the stigma surrounding
addiction and encourage their followers to seek help if they're
struggling with similar issues.
