See the details below.

1. Decide the source you’d like to analyze. Please show your data in the Appendix (e.g.,
excerpt, script). If you wish to go on with interview, stand-up, and TV series, you may
use external source of the transcript - if any (i.e., website that provides movie
transcript). Or simply, you can show the source by typing it manually.

o Analyze the politeness, direct speech acts, and conversational analysis in a
politician’s speech.

4. Finally, make a short paper based on your analysis. Your paper should consist of:
o Abstract
o Chapter 1: Introduction: Background information, the purpose of writing the
paper, the outline of the paper.
o Chapter 2: Theoretical Background: The theory that you use for discussion.

ABSTRACT
Abstract should be around 100-150 words, typed in Italics, single spaced. Abstract
contains purpose of study and result.
This paper is mainly based on the theory by Verdonk (2002), that ideological
perspectives might affect literary reading and those ideological perspectives are
represented in the language use. In this paper, the objects of the study are three poems
by Aung San Suu Kyi, a woman political leader in Burma, entitled In The Quiet Land,
Free bird towards a free Burma, Why do I have to fight? Those poems are read through
power relation struggle viewpoints. This paper wants to peruse the use of language
features in semantic level, syntactic level, graphological level and phonological level.
Those linguistic levels are observable in the text organization, tenses, dictions, and
punctuation to reveal the main ideology of the poems. The linguistic analysis will be
elaborated with the social practices as the contexts. The result shows that the linguistics
analysis might support and justify the ideological perspectives in reading literary
works.
Keywords: stylistics, ideological perspectives, critical discourse analysis

INTRODUCTION
The introduction section should include background of your study. The purpose of
writing the essay, the outline of the essay.
The focus of the literary reading has shifted from the authors’ viewpoints to the readers’
perspective. By focusing on the readers, it also shifts from textual into contextual
approach. Bradford mentions that the style of a text is influenced by the competence and
disposition of the readers, sociocultural forces, and the system of signification
(1997:72). In other words, the production of a text is not only done by the author
therefore the appreciation should also pay attention to the other contexts. The contexts
mentioned by Bradford take account more to the readers rather than to the authors.
Barthes’ The Death of the Author (in Bradford 1997) strengthens the claim that text
reading and interpretation might be conducted from the readers’ perspectives. He does
not claim that the authors are not influential but they are also the contexts along with the
sociocultural forces and readers’ competence.

THEORETICAL BACKGROUND
Elaborate the concept(s) you use for your analysis.

THE MATERIAL
Explain the content of the clip/scene that you decided to choose.

DISCUSSION
The analysis on the language is conducted for each poem. The language features being
analyzed might vary due to the foregrounded ones. However, the analysis looks at the
detailed use of language as the nature of stylistics. Therefore, the analysis as much as
possible observes any linguistic levels including the text organization, tenses, dictions,
and punctuation.

CONCLUSION
From the discussion and analysis, linguistic analysis and approach are evidently feasible
to appreciate and understand literary works. However, the stylistic analysis is only a
supportive tool to endorse the intuition. The intuition depends on the sociocultural
values and ideology in the readers’ contexts. To deepen the intuition some research on
the literary works related discourses seems to be helpful. In this paper, stylistic analysis
has been conducted to support Critical Discourse Analysis toward three poems by Aung
San Suu Kyi, a woman political leader in Myanmar. The analysis on the linguistic
features supports the ideology found in the three poems. The ideology of the poems is
revealed by entangling the related contexts and then being finely justified by the
linguistic analysis. The linguistic analysis was conducted in the level of semantic,
syntactic, graphology, and phonology. However, each poem might need particular
analysis since they have their own foregrounded features.
