MINERAL INFORMATION
History / Uses
Tahiti black pearls develop their perfect shapes and colors in the deep turquoise waters of French
Polynesia's lagoons. Long before Westerners discovered Tahiti, the black pearl had a reputation for
exceptional value and rarity and it was the symbol of perfect beauty. As such, black pearl was known as
the "Pearl of Queens" and the "Queen of Pearls".
Pearls consist mainly of aragonite (CaCO3), trace element of marine origin and, conchiolin, an organic
horn-like protein (albuminoid) compound.
It takes a long time to develop a tiny pearl layer with a characteristic colour lustre which is finally giving
preciousness to our complex.
