METHOD STATEMENT

PLANTING WORK

Purpose

The purpose of this procedure is to elaborate the process of planting works with
follow in accordance the specification.

The method statement also is intended to assist site personnel in the performance of
the above activity. The method also serves to inform that the contractor has studied
the requirement and is capable of undertaking scope of works.

Scope Of Work

a) Quantities
Provide sufficient quantities of plant materials needed to complete the work as
shown on the planting plans. Quantities indicated on the planting plan are
approximate only and are provided for the convenience of the Landscape
Contractor. The Bill of Quantities shall have precedence over the planting plans.

b) Nomenclature
Names of plants shall confirm to names generally accepted in the local nursery
trade, and as interpreted by the Landscape Architect. In all cases of dispute, the
decision of the Landscape Architect shall be final.

c) Condition
All trees, shrubs, vines and groundcover shall have a normal habit of growth and
shall be sound, healthy, vigorous and free from insect infestations.
• Palms - shall have a well developed upright from with good symmetry and
no less than seven vigorous fonds. The root system shall be healthy and
vigorous.
• Shrubs - shall have a bushy habit with a minimum of three branches well
furnished with shoots to produce a plant with a diameter of two thirds the
height. The root system shall be healthy and well developed.
• Groundcover – shall have well developed vigorous shoots and root system
and have an average plant diameter between 100 and 350mm.
• Climbers – shall have vigorous main shoots not less than 600mm long and a
well developed root system.

• Bamboo – shall have a well developed upright form with good symmetry
and vigorous shoots. There shall be no less than five shoots per plant. The
root system shall healthy and well developed.
• Aquatic plants – shall be pot grown in humus rich compost and have
vigorous well developed main stems and healthy foliage. Rootstocks and
rhizomes shall be clean and free of diseases and pests.
• Turf – shall be free from weeds and any other impurities. The grass shall be
of even density and green in color, forming a turf that is sufficiently fibrous
to hold together when handled. Turf plugs shall be 100mm in diameter,
neatly trimmed, with minimum 75% of the root system intact.
• Seeds – shall be covered by an appropriately numbered seed analysis report
or certificate. Seed quality shall be gauged by impurity, germination,
percentage of the grass seeds over a 7 day test period shall be 90% for each
grass species.

The minimum acceptable size of all trees and shrubs measured after pruning, with
branches in normal positions, shall conform to the measurements specified on the
plant list.

Caliper measurement shall be taken at a point on the trunk 1.0 meter above natural
ground line for trees with 100 mm in caliper and above.

Plants that meet the measurement specified, but do not possess a normal
configuration or balance of height and spread will be rejected.

Trees and shrubs larger in size than specified may be used, but the use of larger
plant materials will make no change in the Landscape Contract price. Height shall
not be substituted for balanced form.

Trees and shrubs shall have been grown in containers of the size stated on
Drawings and/or Specification, and shall have sufficient roots to hold the root ball
together after removal from containers without being root bound.

Specimen, field grown and field stock palms and trees shall have root ball of
sufficient size to support the plant’s recovery from transplanting. Palms and trees
delivered with small or inadequate root balls will be rejected. In all cases, the
decision of the Landscape Architect shall be final.

METHOD STATEMENT

All large and ‘specimen’ trees and palms shall be transplanted from growing site by
mechanical crane and planted at site by mechanical crane. Manual labor shall not
be used.

Any tree or shrub with a week, thin trunk not capable of supporting itself when
planted in the open will be rejected.

Trees will be straight and of uniform shape without damage, crooked, or multiple
leaders, unless specified. Trees with abrasions of the bark, sunscalds, disfiguring
knots, fresh cuts of limbs over 12 mm which have not been pruned and painted or
completely callused, will be rejected. Top cut trees are not acceptable.

Rooted cuttings shall he healthy, vegetative material with well established roots at
one or more nodes.
