JOURNALIZING, POSTING, TRIAL BALANCE

I. INTRODUCTION

A. OVERVIEW

Going-Concern Principle discussed in the previous module states that the


business is assumed to have a continuous life from the date of its establishment. This is
our base for studying accounting period and accounting cycle which is discussed in this
module. This module also contains the first (1st) three (3) steps in the accounting cycle,
that is, journalizing, posting, and preparation of trial balance. Illustration is given in each
step of the cycle. Likewise, exercises to further understand the lessons are given after
the lecture.

B. LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the lesson, you should be able to:

1. Define chart of accounts


2. Explain accounting period and its importance
3. Define accounting cycle
4. Identify the steps in the accounting cycle
5. Define journalizing, journal, journal entry
6. Journalize business transactions
7. Define posting, ledger, general ledger, T-account
8. Post the records from the journal to the ledger
9. Define trial balance
10. Differentiate trial balance of totals and trial balance of balances
11. Prepare trial balances from the postings in the ledger
