SUBJECT : SCIENCE 7 (3rd GP) FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT #3

TYPE OF ACTIVITY : CONCEPT NOTES

ACTIVITY TITLE : DESCRIPTORS OF MOTION (SPEED AND VELOCITY)
LEARNING TARGET/S : I can describe motion in terms of Speed and Velocity.
REFERENCE/S : You and the Natural World by Teresita F. Religioso et. al. pp 149 – 153
From the previous lesson, you’ve learned the concept of first two descriptors of motion namely
Distance and Displacement. You were also able to apply it by computing the value of the needed
descriptor based on the given problem. On this lesson, you will understand as well as apply concepts
about speed and velocity.
Speed (v) is a scalar quantity (magnitude only) which refers to the rate at which an object
moves. It describes the distance travelled per unit of time. Mathematically expressed as:
𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 (𝐝)
Formula: 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐞𝐝 (𝐯) = 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 (𝐭)

where: v = speed measured in meter per second (m/s or mps) or kilometer per hour (km/hr or kph)
d = distance measured in meter (m) or kilometer (km)
t = time measured in second (s) or hour (hr)

Sample Problem: If the cyclist moves 30 km. in 2 hours, its speed is calculated as:
𝐝
Given: d = 30 km. Solution: 𝐯 =
𝐭
𝟑𝟎 𝐤𝐦
t = 2 hr. 𝐯= 𝟐 𝐡𝐫
Required: v = ? = 15 km/hr or 15 kph

Velocity (ṽ) is a vector quantity (magnitude with direction) which is similar to speed except
that it does not only tell how fast or slow motion is, it also indicates the direction (North, East, West or
South). It describes the displacement travelled per unit of time. Mathematically expressed as:
𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 (𝐝 )
Formula: 𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐲 (ṽ) = 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 (𝐭)

where: ṽ = velocity measured in meter per second (m/s or mps) or kilometer per hour
(km/hr or kph) with direction (North, East, West or South)
d = displacement measured in meter (m) or kilometer (km) with direction (North, East, West
or South)
t = time measured in second (s) or hour (hr)
Sample Problem: If the cyclist moves 30 km. North in 2 hours, its velocity is calculated as:
𝐝
Given: d = 30 km. North Solution: ṽ = 𝐭
𝟑𝟎 𝐤𝐦
t = 2 hr. ṽ= 𝟐 𝐡𝐫
Required: ṽ = ? ṽ = 15 km/hr or 15 kph North

Apply what you know: Compute for the speed and velocity of the given problem below. Follow the
GIVEN, REQUIRED and SOLUTION format (as shown as above). (PS: 10 pts)
Rouven travels 40 km from Manila to Quezon (South) using his brand-new car. What is the
average speed and average velocity of his car if its traveling time is from 7:00 am to 11:00 am?

Essential Question: In 1 short sentence only, answer the question below. (PS: 1 pt)
* Why do you think speed is important in your daily survival?
