A. Introduction previous lesson. Last meeting, Ma’am Nabio discussed to Yes Ma’am
you a literature,right?

What is the title of that literature? The Gift of the Magi

What have you remembered about that story? (Student’s may vary)

What is the story all about? A married couple named, Jim

and Della who sold their most
loved possessions in order to
buy something beautiful for
each other

Do you have any questions? None

If you don’t have any question, me, I have a question for Yes, Ma’am.
all of you. Are you ready to learn our new topic?

If you are ready to learn, give me three claps

(students clap three times)

Since all of you are ready, let’s proceed to our segment “

PINAGTAGPO NGUNIT HINDI TINADHAN”. To make our
discussion fun, let’s pretend that we are on a talk show.
Like Boy Abunda , Kris Aquino and Toni Gonzaga I will be Yes, Ma’am
the interviewer and you will be the interviewee or the
guest in our talk show. Are you excited?

The first question, who’s celebrity couple or became a

couple you admire the most?
(Students’ answers may vary)

.
In your own perspective or based on the movies you
have watched or stories you have read, can you describe (Student’s answer may vary
to me the feeling of being in love?

Thank you for sharing.

Next question is just a hypothetical question. Meaning it is

something unreal but could possible happen to you.

What will you feel if you found out that there’s someone
who loves you or admires you?

Based on your description, being in love and being loved

give you more than just a positive feeling. I remember
someone describing it as something magical. In
conclusion, love and being in love are beautiful.

We always associate the word happiness to love but does

love only brings happiness to someone? If no, then aside
from happiness what does love brings to people? No. It also brings pain and
suffering

How love brings pain and suffering to someone? Can you

give me an example?
For example, when a couple
decided to broke because of
a conflict or when the other
person cheated on his/her
partner. It will cause pain to
the person being cheated and
it will lead to break up. After
that, you will feel pain
because you lost someone
you love
Exactly! Losing someone you love is painful

Again, aside from happiness, love also brings what? What

feelings? Pain and suffering

Yes, that’s right.

Most of the young people are unaware that behind the

word “love” are pain and brokenness which will have a
great impact on their lives. As they said, “it can either make (Students’ answers may vary)
you or break you.” Do you agree on that?

As a young individuals, do you think you knew everything

about life? As in everything? So, what should you do in No
making decision? Ask advice from our parents
or adults who have wisdom
for us to be guided in making
decision to prevent us from
being hurt
Very good! it is very important for young people to have
guidance from adults. Because there are many things that
young people must know but they are too stubborn, they
don’t want to listen because they taught they knew
everything. Like what the Apo Hiking Society said on their
song “batang-bata kalang at akala mo na, na alam mo na

ganyan. “

Since we talked about being in love and being

heartbroken, I guess you have some hints about the
theme of the literature that we will discuss. And I’m sure
you will enjoy it because it’s so relatable and timely.
Without further ado, let’s analyze the literary piece.

I have here a poem of Alfred Edward Housman entitled

“When I was one-and-twenty.’ Listen as I read first the
poem then later on, you will be the ones to read it again.
After that, we will analyze each line of these poem.

Now, read the poem once again. In 1, 2, 3, read! When I was one-and-twenty
by Alfred Edward Housman

When I was one-and twenty I

heard a wise man say,
“Give crowns and pounds and
guineas
But not your heart away;
Give pearls away and rubies
But keep your fancy free.” But
I was one-and-twenty, No use
to talk to me

B. Development
When I was one-and-twenty I
heard him say again,
“The heart out of the bosom
Was never given in vain;
Tis paid with sighs a plenty
And sold for endless rue.”
And I am two-and-twenty,
And oh, ‘tis true, ‘tis true

The consequences of
heartbreak that he might
experience if he did not listen
Before we proceed to the analysis of the poem, let’s unlock
first the unfamiliar word we found on the poem. We have
the “guinea” which is an English gold coin way back from
1663-1813. We also have the “ruby” which is a red
precious stone. Last is rue, which means to feel sorrow or
regret. Later on, we will find out how these words contribute
to the meaning of the poem.

(KRIZIA)

Now, as our guide towards analyzing this poem, let us have

these guide questions. Everybody, kindly read the first
question.
1) What was the theme
of the poem? How
many persons are
involved in the
poem?

What do you think is the theme of the poem? What is it all It is about love and sorrow.
about?

How about the persons involved in the poem based on the Two, the speaker and the
first two lines? Who are they? wise man.

That’s right! It talks about a wise man giving some love

advice to a one-and twenty or a 21-year-old. As you can
see in the first two lines in the first stanza, kindly read When I was one-and twenty
everybody. I heard a wise man say,

The 21-year-old spoke to a wise man, asserting that a wise

man could pertained to be older than the 21-year-old.

Now, for question number 2, everybody read. 2) What specific advice

was given by the
wise man to the
young man?

The 21-year-old met the wise man and an advice was Not to fall in love.
given, so what do you think was the advice of the wise
man?

Why do you think the wise man advice the 21-year-old this Students’ answers may vary
way?

Yes, it can be! As you can see in the next 3 lines of the “Give crowns and pounds and
poem, the wise man tells the speaker to give away guineas
anything but the heart. The next lines, please read: But not your heart away;
Give pearls away and rubies”
But keep your fancy free

As we unlocked the term “guinea a while ago, what does it An English gold coin from

All right! When we say a gold coin, we knew it’s very

valuable, and in this poem, crowns and guinea could be
given up that easy but the heart couldn’t be. Even the
precious pearls and rubies, which is again a kind of Yes, Ma’am
precious stone, symbolized wealth and money and the

wise man says that it is better to happen a wealthy man fall

into poverty than to fall in love. Did you get what I mean?

Now, everybody read the third question. 3) Did the young man
listen to the advice of
the wise man?

Did he listen? Yes or No? No

Why? How do you say that the 21-year-old did not listen to Because of the last line in the
the wise man? first stanza, “No use to talk to
me”
That’s right! It is not actually mentioned directly or
specifically on the poem but on the last two lines of the first
stanza:
But I was one-and-twenty,
No use to talk to me.

The speaker clarified that it is useless for the wise man say
that to him or to give him some advice because he is
already 21 years old. As a 21-year-old, he maybe thinks of (Some student says “NO”,
no one to control his decisions, especially in love. Are you some answers “YES”)
having the same perception as him? Will you listen to
someone saying you should not fall in love at the age of
21?

Why Yes? Why No? Students’ answers may vary.

(The teacher considered the answers of the students) 4) How does the
Alright! Everybody, read the last question. transition happen in
the poem from the
first stanza up to the
second?

When we say transition, this is how the changes went into

the poem from the first stanza up to the last stanza. So how When I was one-and-twenty
does the transition happen? Please read the 2 lines in the I heard him say again,
second stanza.

In the second stanza, the speaker once again mentioned The wise man is being
his encountered of the wise man evident in these lines. But consistent with his description
what happened on the second encounter? of love.

Yes! That’s right! The wise man still says how sorrowful it
is to be in loved.
“The heart out of the bosom
Was never given in vain;
Tis paid with sighs a plenty
And sold for endless rue.”

It was said that giving your heart is like buying your own Yes, Ma’am.
sorrow and regrets in life. Are you getting the idea of the
wise man about love?

Now, on the last line, as you can see, it was said that:

And I am two-and-twenty,
And oh, ‘tis true, ‘tis true.

Based on the description, how old is the 21-year-old when 22 years old
he met again the wise man?

Yes, that’s right! Did he listen? Yes, based on the last line,
“And oh, ‘tis true, ‘tis true”

Exactly! Now, the transition is really evident on the second

stanza specifically on the last lines. If the speaker did not
listen to the wise man on the first stanza, on the second
stanza, the speaker proved that what the wise man said is
true now that he is already 22 years old who maybe already
experienced a heartbreak.

The 21-year-old and now turned 22 proved to himself that

yes, the wise man is right about his advice in me a year
ago.

Did you understand the poem? Yes, Ma’am!

Generally speaking, what do you think is the lesson of the Always listen to the advice of
poem? the elders.

Yes, very good! Listening to the advice of the elders will

lead you to better directions and decisions but you still Yes, Ma’am.
have to choose whom to listen to, okay?

Class, you see how literature connects to the reality of the

world? Heartbreaks are often experienced by most of the
people, just like for example, Kathryn Bernardo, Nadine
Lustre, and more, right? Even values are present in the
poem wherein the elders used to give advice to youth. This
is how the literature connects to the unchanging values in
the VUCA World.

(JEROME)

What is VUCA? Everyone please read. First used in 1987, VUCA is

an acronym based on the
leadership theories of Warren
Bennis and Burt Nanus, that
stands for volatility,
uncertainty, complexity, and
ambiguity. In a VUCA world,
the most important thing is to
anticipate the future and
strengthen cooperation to
come up with better solutions
to problems and challenges.

For you to be able to understand it more, let’s discuss the Volatility is the quality of
volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity. Who being subject to frequent,
wants to read the first one? rapid and significant change

PAARALANG SEKUNDARYA NG LUCBAN INTEGRATED SCHOOL

Like in the poem, at the beginning, the speaker did not

listen to the advice of the wise man because he thought,
he knew everything. But then, later on, when he
experiences heartbreak, he realizes the advice of the
wise man of not giving away his heart because he might
get hurt is true

Next, uncertainty, someone please read Uncertainty occurs when

events and outcomes are
unpredictable. The cause and
effect are not well understood

Uncertainty means being unsure or not having any idea.

For example, in the poem, because the speaker is still
young, he wants to be loved. He wants to give away his
heart so freely that he does not know the consequences
of the pain it will cause him.

Next, complexity. Someone, please read Complexity-interconnected

factors come into play, with
the potential to cause chaos
and confusion.

It means having the potential to cause something. For

example, in the poem, if the speaker does not listen to the
advice of wise men, he can experience pain or
heartbreak. And, it happened.

Next, ambiguity. Someone, please read Ambiguity is shaped by a lack

of clarity and difficulty
understanding exactly what
the situation is.
For example, the speaker doesn't understand that his heart
is the most valuable; therefore, he should protect it by
listening to the advice of the wise man. He does not know
that when he loves, he will get hurt

Do you understand? Yes, Ma’am

Again, VUCA stands for? volatility, uncertainty,

complexity, and ambiguity
Very Good!
