Now, read the poem once again. In 1, 2, 3, read! When I was one-and-twenty
by Alfred Edward Housman
B. Development
When I was one-and-twenty I
heard him say again,
“The heart out of the bosom
Was never given in vain;
Tis paid with sighs a plenty
And sold for endless rue.”
And I am two-and-twenty,
And oh, ‘tis true, ‘tis true
The consequences of
heartbreak that he might
experience if he did not listen
Before we proceed to the analysis of the poem, let’s unlock
first the unfamiliar word we found on the poem. We have
the “guinea” which is an English gold coin way back from
1663-1813. We also have the “ruby” which is a red
precious stone. Last is rue, which means to feel sorrow or
regret. Later on, we will find out how these words contribute
to the meaning of the poem.

Now, everybody read the third question. 3) Did the young man
listen to the advice of
the wise man?
Why? How do you say that the 21-year-old did not listen to Because of the last line in the

That’s right! It is not actually mentioned directly or
specifically on the poem but on the last two lines of the first
stanza:
But I was one-and-twenty,
No use to talk to me.
The speaker clarified that it is useless for the wise man say
that to him or to give him some advice because he is
already 21 years old. As a 21-year-old, he maybe thinks of (Some student says “NO”,
