REFLECTION
1. What is the role of pop culture in the society?

According to the book of “Understanding Popular Culture” by John Fiske (1998)

the popular culture lies not in the production of goods but in the effective use of those
important goods‘‘ and combines them to create a more meaningful interpretation of our
daily existence in an environment that is difficult to handle. In other words, what we
consider trends in media, entertainment and recreation, fashion and trends as well as
linguistic conventions or expressions, among other things, are not just imagination
purely that, in a real sense, they represent a symbol, an expression or even a deeper
resistance to what is happening is a conventional or compulsory popular culture
imposed by a powerful upper class.

2. How did pop culture reshape the history of the Filipino people?

The Philippine history has seen numerous struggles against injustice and social
inequality, fueling the quest for freedom. Anti-Spanish propaganda, such as the use of
yellow as a political "FAD" during the EDSA revolution, symbolized resistance against
foreign rule. The world adopts similar strategies to symbolize silent resistance against
dictators and powerful elites and that is how the pop culture reshapes the history of the
Philippines.

3. How do trends and fashion associated to freedom & resistance?

Trends and fashion associated with freedom and resistance in the Philippines
have a rich and dynamic history rooted in the country's struggle for independence and
its continued fight for social justice. It also serves as a means of expressing cultural
pride, dissent, and resilience, and it continues to evolve as Filipino society progresses in
its quest for a more just and equitable future.

Exercise
In this module you studied framing Filipino popular culture amidst the rise of social media.
Using the following lessons, state your own generalization or understanding of the topic & relate
it to the actual application on your personal observation in the society today. Answer the
following questions:

1. How do you define the role of social media in your personal life & in the society
as a whole? Was it a boon (advantage) or a bane (disadvantage). Choose one
side only and explain why.

The Social Media plays a significant role in my life. It has been part of my
everyday activities as I enjoy browsing in any social media platforms and entertains me
a lot and at the same time I have learned much information about random things and is
very accessible and essential especially in communicating with people for instance, with
friends and family who live abroad.

I think there are many benefits to social media when we consider its good side.
The most crucial one is an amazing educational tool. Anyone can access any
information with a single click. Social media can be used by students like me to educate
themselves on a variety of topics. Additionally, as more and more people turn away
from newspapers, they depend more and more on social media for news. Through it, we
are constantly kept informed on the most recent events in the world. A person develops
a greater social awareness of global challenges.

ASSESMENT

Right after answering the following questions post it at the Discussions forum provided
(facebook unit 3 post). Post it as a thread to open a venue for discussions & exchange of ideas.
Please remember to be polite & courteous towards fellow learners. Deadline will be on
September 22, 2020 at 12:00 pm ( GMT ). Good luck!
REFLECTION

1. How do we frame Pop culture in the Philippines?

The popular culture has had a significant impact on the Philippines. We have
incorporated American ideals and ideas into our own. Additionally, we have adapted
American cuisine, clothing, and entertainment. Another popular culture that has
influenced Philippine society is anime from Japan and dramas from Korea. These
outside popular cultures have influenced how we think and act. They have also affected
the way we behave, communicate, and dress. Our values and ideas have also been
influenced by popular culture. Popular culture has had a big impact on Philippine
society, for better or bad.

2. How media spreads popular culture?

By encouraging what people should believe, purchase, feel, and do, the media to
some extent shapes culture. The entire concept of political correctness was and still is
an attempt by the media to control what people say and do, but at the price of their right
to free expression. The media pushes its own morality and forces it on the populace by
characterizing people as morally phobic. The issue is that because the media places
more emphasis on what is superficial than on what is substantive, popular culture that is
supported by the media encourages superficiality in thinking and behavior.

3. How does it affect the aspects of Filipino life?

Social media's influence extends far beyond interpersonal relationships and free
speech. Additionally, it has had a tremendous impact on how the Filipino society as a
whole is shaped, having an impact on everything from politics and news to business
and commerce to culture and entertainment. For instance, social media has provided
Filipinos with a potent new platform for political action and social change, enabling us to
mobilize, organize, and advocate for topics that are important to us in ways that were
before inconceivable. It has also altered how we obtain and disseminate news and
information, dismantling established gatekeepers and creating new avenues for
independent voices and viewpoints. Social media has simultaneously introduced new
issues and challenges, such as those of privacy, misinformation, and online
harassment. But despite these challenges, it is clear that social media has irreversibly
changed the way that Filipinos engage with each other and the world around us, and
will continue to do so in the years ahead.
