Experiment Name- Determination of breakdown strength of solid i ating, material. Objective- To get knowledge about insulation papers. Theory- Electrical insulation papers are paper types that are used as electrical insulation in many applications due to pure cellulose having outstanding electrical properties. Cellulose is a good insulator and is also polar having a dielectric constant significantly greater than one. Electrical paper products are classified by their thickness with tissue considered paper less than 1.5mils (0.0381mm) thickness and board considered more than 20mils (0.508mm) thickness. Classifications of Insulation Paper- 1. Enamel Paper:- ()— Theory- The wire used on the coils of meters, relays, small transformers, motor winding and so forth is called magnet wire. It has a spirally wrapped nonmagnetic metallic type over the insulation. The space between conductors is filled with a suitable spacer to round out the cable, (ii) Breakdown Strength- The breakdown strength of this paper is 0.9kV. (ili) Thickness- 1.4mm is the thickness of that paper. 2. Impreqnated Paper- (i) Theory—Paper has little insulation value alone, However, when impregnated with a high grade of mineral oil, it serves as a satisfactory insulation for extremely high voltage cables, The oil has a high dielectric strength and tents to prevent breakdown of the paper insulation. The paper must be thoroughly saturated with the oil. The thin paper tape is wrapped in many layers around the conductors and then soaked with oil. (ii) Breakdown Strength- The breakdown strength of this Paper is 0.6kV. (iii) Thickness- 0.2mm is the thickness of that Paper. 3. Synthetic Paper- (i) Theory- synthetic Paper having high breakdown Properties, The electrical and mechanical properties of the synthetic compared with those of cellulose paper and polypropylene film, The Possibility of using this synthetic Paper as an insulating material for electrical equipment was investigated and the results indicate that the paper may be used as a substitute for cellulose paper, (i) Breakdown Strength— The bre (iii) Thickness- Paper were measured and ‘akdown strength of this paper is 0.6kV. 0.1mmis the thickness of that Paper, 4. Class B Paper: (i) Theory- Class B insulation consists of materi Jass fiber, asbestos ete, With suitable bonding, impregnating or bs Other materials or combination of materials, not necessarily inorganic may be included in this class, if by experience or tests they can be shown to be capable of operation at the Class B temperature. (ii) Breakdown Strenath~ The breakdown strength of this paper is 0.7kV. (iii) Thickness— 0.29mm1 is the thickness of that paper. Check earth points. Always make sure there is a good quality earth connection, to which all of the components can be connected. 3. Ensure the transformer is connected correctly to the control desk. 4. Switch on the Control Desk.
