Introduction to Qualitrol Condition Monitoring

With increasing cut on the operating expenditure and drive to improve the bottom line of the company,
utilities are looking for solutions that enables them to reduce costs associated to operation and
maintenance of installed equipment e.g. transformers, switchgears, breakers etc. Online condition
monitoring on these critical asset is the easy and effective solution that helps utilities to move from time-
based to condition-based maintenance. The online monitoring also helps utilities in optimum capacity
utilization and better asset investment plans.

Qualitrol has been a leader is supplying reliable monitoring and protection solutions for key components
of transformers, switchgears, breakers and cables. With its vast knowledge of monitoring it now
provides a complete condition monitoring solution for power transformers. The solution includes
sensors to collect real-time information from transformer, data acquisition units (DAUs) to collect data
from all sensors and Expert Analysis software to perform analytics on the collected data. It’s expert
analysis software indicates any incipient fault well in advance so that customers can take appropriate
actions on time before the asset fails.

Further to that, Qualitrol also provides enterprise monitoring software to monitor a fleet of assets from
one location e.g. company headquarter or substation control room. A fleet and network wide condition
assessment tool supports condition based maintenance principles and enhance the monitoring
capabilities of customers.

Introduction to Bushing Monitor

Faults at bushing are one of the major causes of transformer failure. Offline testing of bushing is
becoming an expensive solution because of the pressure of minimum outage requirement and maximum
utilization of transformer. Therefore, online bushing monitoring is becoming increasingly important for
transformer owners and operators. Online monitoring also provides timely detection of even rapidly
developing defects / damages. Online monitoring of bushing capacitance and dissipation factor (tan δ) /
power factor is important for evaluating the operational state of a high voltage bushing. Apart of aging,
there are some external factors responsible for changes in dissipation factor and capacitance of bushing
e.g. internal defects in insulation, moisture and dirt on the outside on the porcelain etc. Therefore,
tracking these changes in tan δ and capacitance is very important to identify the health of high voltage
bushings.

Bushing monitoring is one of the products of Qualitrol total condition monitoring offering that provides
continuous online monitoring of high voltage condenser bushing. It continuously monitors the
Dissipation Factor (tan δ) / Power Factor and the Capacitance of bushings on real time basis and
promptly notifies the operators for any developing fault. The tan δ value, even if calculated differently
is identical by numbers to the Power Factor for high resistive insulation systems (δ < 3°).

Qualitrol bushing monitoring uses the phase shift measuring method (also known as reference method),
where a reference signal, usually taken from a VT/ CVT secondary output, allows a direct measurement
and high accuracy measured values. Small changes of the Dissipation Factor (DF) indicate for any
developing fault / defect. Measurement of temperature at the bushing and further advanced
compensation algorithms eliminates the possibility of false alarms for Dissipation Factor changes due

to temperature and other environmental influences. Furthermore, the Dissipation Factor and temperature
also allows a more meaningful analysis of the measured data.

The key components of Qualitrol QTMS-BM include:

• Bushing Tap Adapter and Sensor housing

Bushing tap adaptor is supplied for each bushing to adapt mechanically to different bushing taps. It is
an interface between the monitoring sensor and bushing tap. Qualitrol provides adaptors for various
brands of bushing taps. The adaptor also contains temperature sensor to measure bushing temperature.

The bushing sensor is directly connected to the Bushing Tap adapter and contains the protection (against
transient voltages) and matching circuit. The output of the sensor circuit is a voltage signal that is used
to measure the phase shift from the reference signal.

• Bushing monitoring plugin card

Bushing monitoring will be provided as plugin card for the QTMS monitoring solution. The bushing

Figure 3: Bushing monitoring plugin card

plugin card consists of its own processor board and the bushing signal input and digitalization card. The
bushing card connects through the backplane and communicates via Modbus protocol with the main
CPU of the QTMS. External communication will be provided through the QTMS CPU unit. The
Ethernet port on the bushing card will be used for commissioning of the bushing module and in service
this port will carry the Ethernet connection to the OCU (optical converter unit), if UHF PD monitoring
is supplied as part of the monitoring.

The QTMS only accepts one bushing card at a time. The bushing card can be installed at slot 14 (13 +14
as the card needs two slots), slot 7 (6 +7) for 6U and 3U QTMS units and at slot 4 (3 + 4) for half 3U
QTMS units.

The bushing module provides the input sockets up to 6 bushing sensors signals, temperature signals and
reference voltage signals. Further an Ethernet port and 2 USB ports are provided on the front panel (see
Figure 4).

The bushing monitoring processor board runs Windows 7 embedded (WES) with its full functionality.
A SQL light database holds the configuration and records the bushing and PD data. A SSD hard drive
provides the permanent storage for operating system, programs, data etc.

• File structure on the SSD drive

The SSD drive installed on bushing monitoring card will come with C:\ and a D:\ drive. While the C:\
drive is used for the operating system and the standard software, the D:\ drive is used for the monitoring
software and monitoring data. The monitoring software can be found in the “Program Files” folder (see
Figure 5). The monitoring data and the configuration files are in the “Program Data” folder (see Figure
6).

Input signal verification and Setting of Parameters

Once the commissioning software is running the values in the input verification block (see Figure 17)
will appear for the connected bushings. The “CurrentRefVoltage” must match with the previous
measured and recorded “Reference signal input” voltage and the “CurrentRefCurrent” must match with
the previous measured and recorded “Bushing Sensor signal input” (see further above, Measurement of
input values) for each bushing.

The next steps are (see Figure 17):

1. Check if “System Frequency” matches and correct, if necessary. It can be 50 or 60 Hz.

2. Set the number of connected bushings and restart the “Qualitrol DMS Condition Monitoring
System SQLite” service (see Page 9 of this manual)

NOTE: If this setting will be changed after the bushing calibration, the “Qualitrol DMS
Condition Monitoring System SQLite” service needs to be restarted and the calibration
needs to be redone.

NOTE: The bushings need to be connected to the channels 1 to 3 for the 3 bushings
version, to channel 1 to 4 for the 4 bushings version and to all channels for the 6 bushing
version.

www.qualitrolcorp.com
QUALITROL QTMS-BM 

3. Check and correct, if necessary the “ExpectedShiftAngle”. In standard configuration, it should

be 90 degrees for a VT or CVT reference. If another bushing is used as reference input (e.g. same
phase, but different transformer or a sister bushing from the same transformer) it should be 0
degree.
4. Set the “VTRatio”:
a. Get the present phase to phase or phase to ground voltage from control centre/ control
room in that moment and note the “CurrentRefVoltage” at the same time for each phase
and bushing.
b. In case of phase to phase voltage:
Phase to Phase voltage [kV]

√3 × 𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶 [𝑉𝑉]
c. In case of phase to ground voltage:
Phase to Ground voltage [kV]

𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶 [𝑉𝑉]
d. Set the “VTRatio” as per the calculation above for each bushing.
e. After all values are updated in the settings screen verify, that “PhaseVoltagekV” is
showing the right primary phase to ground voltage in kV.
5. If not provided as factory setting, set “BushingResistance” as per the measurement taken during
sensor installation. If these values are missing, the following equation will enable the calculation
of the resistance values out of the displayed values and the initial capacitance of the dedicated
bushing:
CurrentRefCurrent [V]
𝐵𝐵𝐵𝐵𝐵𝐵ℎ𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖 [Ω] =
PhaseVoltagekV × 1000 × 2𝜋𝜋 × 𝑆𝑆𝑆𝑆𝑆𝑆𝑆𝑆𝑆𝑆𝑆𝑆 𝐹𝐹𝐹𝐹𝐹𝐹𝐹𝐹𝐹𝐹𝐹𝐹𝐹𝐹𝐹𝐹𝐹𝐹[𝐻𝐻𝐻𝐻] × 𝐼𝐼𝐼𝐼𝐼𝐼𝐼𝐼𝐼𝐼𝐼𝐼𝐼𝐼 𝐵𝐵𝐵𝐵𝐵𝐵ℎ𝑖𝑖𝑛𝑛𝑛𝑛 𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶[𝑝𝑝𝑝𝑝] × 10−12

NOTE: For a correct calculation in this case, the steps 1 to 3 above must be finalized
and verified. The initial capacitance of the dedicated bushing must be known.

6. Set the “InitialTanDelta” value as an absolute value. An example for an absolute Tan Delta
(respectively Power Factor) value is 0.00325 which would 0.325% as a percentage value. This
value is important to be able to do the calibration of the tan Delta (Power Factor).
7. The “MinBushingVoltage” and the “MinBushingCurrent” are used to detect the offline condition
of the transformer to stop automatically the calculation and recording of the tan Delta (Power
Factor) values. “MinBushingVoltage” should set to 10V and “MinBushingCurrent” should set
to 5V as a standard.
8. Verify that the displayed “Phase Angle” is in the range of ± 5 degree of the
“ExpectedShiftAngle”.
9. Change to the register “Summary Reports” (see Figure 18).

www.qualitrolcorp.com
QUALITROL QTMS-BM 

“Settings” - register

Figure 18: Summary Reports display

10. Verify, that the displayed capacitances for each bushing are in the range of the initial value ±5%.
11. Verify, that the displayed temperatures are matching. Depending on the load of the transformer,
the displayed temperatures should be above the ambient temperature.

If all above is done and verified, the bushing monitoring system is ready for its calibration.

Tan Delta (Power Factor) calibration

The Tan Delta (Power Factor) calibration will compensate automatically the additional phase shift
introduced by the installation (e.g. reference voltage source, cables etc.). Further it will set the
parameters needed for compensating the external influence of the changing magnetic field caused by the
load current of the transformer. The calibration will be based on the “InitialTanDelta” value for each
individual bushing.
The calibration can be done over different periods, 1 day, 4 days or 1 week (select via
“CalibrationPeriod”, see Figure 17). Selecting “Now” or “Pending” for “StartCalibration” will initiate
the calibration. “Now” will use the available data from the past. “Pending” will depending on the
selected period the calibration in the future and the system will collect further data until the available
data are matching the calibration period and finish by then. During the calibration period, the initial tan
Delta values are being displayed.
Standard calibration steps:
1. After starting QTMS-BM and the settings of the parameters as described above, leave the system
running at least for 1 hour to generate enough data for an initial calibration.
2. Select “Now” from “StartCalibration”. The system will use the available data for calibration.
3. Change to the register “SummaryReports” and review the displayed tan Delta (Power Factor)
values that they match with the initial values.
4. Close the commissioning software and remove the Ethernet cable from the bushing module and
plug it into the QTMS CPU card Ethernet port.

NOTE: Please refer for the following steps also to the QTMS user manual.

www.qualitrolcorp.com
QUALITROL QTMS-BM 

5. Open the Internet explorer and key into the address field the QTMS IP address (standard:
10.0.0.4). The login screen will appear. Login as “admin” with the standard password “qualitrol”.
6. Go to the bushing input card and verify, that tan Delta, capacitance, temperature, leakage current
and voltage is displayed correctly.
7. Exit the QTMS web screen.
8. Reconnect the Ethernet cable to the bushing card, start the commissioning software and review
tan Delta stability for at least an hour.
9. Set “CalibrationPeriod” to 1 week and select “Pending” from “StartCalibration”. Now the system
will use the 1-week future data for the calibration.

With step 9 the setup and calibration process is finished. For service purpose, a copy from the database
must be taken (see chapter File Structure on the SSD hard drive further above) and send back to project
management.

Trouble shooting guide

Preface
As most of problems during commissioning, out of the experiences of onsite work, are caused by cabling
issues. Especially wire crossing in the reference voltage input will destroy the bushing card once the
pre-fuses of 0.5A are not installed in front of the reference inputs. One other common case in the bushing
sensor cabling besides wire crossing is not connected shielding. The shield of the sensor cable needs to
be connected to ground either on the sensor itself or close to the QTMS itself. The shield must be
connected only on one side!

Here some examples of the above:

Figure 20: burned reference input channels Figure 20: Discharge marks due to non-connected cable
screen
In both cases the accusation cards of the QTMS bushing module have been damaged. Nevertheless, due
to the integrated shunts and protection none of this will have any influence on the bushing itself.

To avoid any damage on the bushing monitoring equipment the Site preparation and installation guide
and the commissioning manual must be strictly followed.

Following some trouble shooting procedures are described.

Useful software tools for trouble shooting

CMSInspector
The CMSInspector provides the possibility to review detailed online information, used from the bushing
monitoring software to derive and calculate the tan Delta, Capacitance and Temperature, as well as the
compensation and filtering. Further it can be verified that all components of the bushing monitoring are
properly connected and running. Also changes in the settings can be done.

WARNING – Wrong settings/ manipulations can stop the bushing monitoring to work. Make
sure, that the appropriate procedures are being followed to avoid any miss function. Note, that
changes for the settings are only taking affect, once the “Qualitrol Condition Monitoring Service”
is restarted!

The following steps will describe the logon process with the CMSInspector:

1. Start CMSInspector. The program will start with the screen shown in Figure 21 once no or a non-
valid IP address has been used.

in into the bushing module as well as in the laptop. Further the IP address of the laptop must be set as
described under the chapter “Prepare TCP/IP Ethernet connection to QTMS-BM bushing module” further
above. Set the right IP address of the VNC server (standard is 192.168.220.29) and “Connect” to the remote
system (see Figure 25).

Figure 26 above is showing the screen, once the VNC viewer is started successfully. The VNC viewer must
be used to restart the “Qualitrol Condition monitoring service”. Further it can be used for copying files from
a USB drive to the busing module and vice versa.

FTP connection to the QTMS-BM module

A FTP server is installed and accessible on the bushing module to provide the possibility to download
and upload files (e.g. new config files, debug files etc.). Following it will be describe how to connect
via FTP to the bushing module.

1. Open File Explorer and key in “ftp://192.168.220.29/” in the address line and press Enter.

Figure 27: FTP logon window

2. The FTP logon window will open. The user name is “DMSUser” and the standard password is
“Password123”. Press “Log On” to access the bushing module file system (see Figure 27).

module was successful.

Debug file recording

Capturing Debug files

The QTMS-BM module allows to record debug files which contains the digitalized input signals to be able
to analyse amplitudes and phase relationship of the raw incoming signals. These files are stored as CSV
files and can be load into Excel to generate the signal plot. It’s useful once the phase shift measured is
different than the expected phase angle to investigate the cause.

The following steps will describe how to enable the debug file recording:

1. Open the property window in the CMSInspector (see Figure 24).

2. Expend the QProtokolPlugin and select the “BushingModule” (see Figure 29 below).

Figure 29: Property window with "BushingModule" selected

3. Check that “TraceDir” is pointing to an existing directory on the D:\ drive of the bushing module.
Use the VNC viewer to check if the “TraceDir” is existing. If not create this directory.
4. The next step is to set “CreateCSV” to True as shown in Figure 27. Switch on “Sim”, change
“CreateCSV” from False to True, press “Enter” and switch of “Sim”. Change in the tree view on
the left to “Bushing1” and back to “BushingModul” and confirm that the setting for “CreateCSV”
remained as True. Otherwise repeat this step.

5. To enable the debug file creation, the “Qualitrol Condition Monitoring Service” needs to be
restarted under “Services” (Windows).

CSV debug files

Figure 30: Created debug files

6. After restarting the condition monitoring service, the debug files will be created under the pre-set
directory.
7. Once at least one file is created for each sensor, the debug file recording can be switched off again.
To do that, step 4 should be followed but the “CreateCSV” must be set to False. After the setting
change, the condition monitoring service must be restarted again.
8. Now the debug files can be copied either via ftp service direct to the laptop or via VNC viewer to a
USB stick.
9. Delete the debug files on the bushing module to save the space on the local drive.

Reviewing of Debug files

The review of the debug files is helping specially to check, if the allocation of the reference voltage
inputs to the specific bushings is correct. If a VT or CVT is used for reference it is expected, that the
bushing input is leading the reference voltage input by 90 degrees. The created CSV files can be opened

in Excel. Figure 31 is showing how good input files are looking like. The following graphs are showing
non-correct inputs. In Figure 32 is showing a graph where obviously the reference signal inputs are cross
wired (phase allocation wrong). Figure 33 is showing an example for a reference input signal which is
too high in amplitude and is clipped. A plot with missing reference signal input is shown in Figure 34.

Consideration on warning and alarm limits for bushings

Different bushings regarding technology and manufacture have slightly different initial values.
Considering that the introduction of general threshold values is difficult to apply, different standards
stating different alarming levels. The most reasonable approach is to relate the warning and alarm levels
to the name plate initial values. In general, if a bushing has an increased tan delta by the factor of 2 it
should be a warning condition. If the tan delta exceeds the triple value an alarm should be raised. The
rate of change is only from interest, once the bushing tan delta is under warning or alarm condition. In
that case the rate of change will give the time frame for an intervention. Further it would be useful to
especially monitor the tan delta temperature specific. High deviations between tan delta values at higher
and lower temperature values might indicate that moisture is involved.

The capacitance increase gets critical, once it would exceed 5% of the name plate value (warning) and
would need undivided attention once it gets over 8%. This is not valid for RBP technology bushings.
Here an increase of 15 to 20% can be still ok depending on the manufacturing year. Here the holistic
approach needs to be used. All parameters of this type of bushing then must be used to make a proper
assessment. Nevertheless, this type of bushings is very seldom nowadays.

Standard alarm setup recommendation

Table 1 below represents a recommendation for a simple alarming setup:

Table 1: Alarm setup recommendation

Warning Alarm

Tan Delta (or PF) > 2 x name plate value > 3 x name plate value
Capacitance > 5% increase to name plate value > 8% increase to name plate value

For instruction, how to set warning and alarm levels please refer to the IST-119-1 QTMS User Guide v
2.2.1 - TK.

More sophisticate by combining the dynamic behaviour of both values can be used for analytic
approaches. This will not be discussed as part of this manual.
