2-stroke engines

WÄRTSILÄ FUEL EFFICIENCY BOOST

A high efficiency of the main engine is a key factor for the profitable
transport of cargo by vessels. An upgrade with the Wärtsilä Fuel
efficiency boost enables the fuel costs of two-stroke engines to
be reduced considerably while complying with exhaust emission
regulations.

A well balanced combination of an increased compression ratio and

modified injector nozzles combined with optimized engine tuning
parameters allows fuel savings of up to 4% without significantly
increasing the NOx emissions.

13

RETROFIT PULSE LUBRICATING SYSTEM

A retrofit solution for reducing cylinder oil consumption without

compromising piston running reliability.

The costs for cylinder lubricating oil have become a critical issue
for vessel operators, with market prices for lubricating oil constantly
fluctuating while availability can be limited. To help alleviate this
situation, Wärtsilä has developed an electronically-controlled retrofit
lubricating system, the Retrofit Pulse Lubricating System (RPLS),
to serve the demand for lower cylinder oil feed rates. It delivers
reduced cylinder oil consumption without compromising piston
running reliability.

The reduction in the cylinder oil feed rate provided by the Pulse
Lubricating System, compared with existing accumulator systems,
is made possible by improving the distribution of the cylinder
lubricating oil to the piston
ring package, and
by the precise
timing of the oil
delivery.

2-stroke engines

SLOW STEAMING UPGRADE KIT

For ships with RTA and RT-flex low-speed engines, Wärtsilä has
introduced a Slow Steaming Upgrade Kit to enable ship owners
and operators to achieve major savings in fuel costs through slow
steaming their ships.

The kit both extends the load range of the engine for continuous
operation, and provides a major reduction in the break specific fuel
consumption (BSFC) in the low-load range. Low-speed two-stroke
engines are normally operated at loads greater than 60% CMCR.
The kit allows Wärtsilä low-speed marine engines to be operated
continuously at any power within a range of 10% to 100% of the
contracted maximum continuous rated (CMCR) power without
additional operating restrictions.

When slow steaming without this kit’s modification, there is

an increased risk of engine fouling and excessive component
temperatures. This can occur in both RTA and RT-flex engine types
when they are operated continuously below 50% engine load. The
kit overcomes such problems, enabling the engines to operate
continuously at any power down to 10% of their full installed power.
The modified engine is not permanently derated, but can operate at
any time up to its full installed power for full sea speed.

INTELLIGENT COMBUSTION MONITORING

Continuous monitoring of engine performance to improve reliability,

reduce operation costs, and minimize off-hire costs.

The Wärtsilä Intelligent Combustion Monitoring system for two-

stroke diesel engines provides continuous engine performance
measurement and monitoring, based on the sophisticated
technology of the well-known ABB Cylmate® system. By uniquely
combining measurements of the cylinder pressure and crankshaft
position, together with advanced mathematical modelling of the
engine, highly accurate, real-time data for monitoring and diagnostic
analysis is provided. The quality of the data ensures significant
benefits from improved reliability, reductions in operating costs, and
the minimizing of off-hire costs.

16
2-stroke engines

INTELLIGENT COMBUSTION CONTROL

FOR RT-FLEX AND W-X ENGINES

The Intelligent Combustion Control system helps to reduce fuel oil

consumption and maintenance costs as well as ensuring operational
reliability. It enables the ship’s engines to operate reliably and in
accordance with their original shop test performance. The system
operates automatically onboard, in real time, and regardless of either
the fuel in use or the ambient conditions.

Compared to an engine where the Fuel Quality Setting is incorrectly

adjusted, the measured reduction in fuel oil consumption with an
activated ICC is up to 2.5 g/kWh over the entire engine load range.
The reduction in specific fuel oil consumption also results in a
decrease of CO2 emissions.

17
Upgrade solutions

BLENDING ON BOARD SYSTEM

A system and support service to optimize overall engine lubrication

performance and costs. Engine operational versatility, in terms of
the operating load and heavy fuel oil quality, has a profound effect
on operating costs. Furthermore, constraints related to emission
controlled areas and new fuel regulations call for more flexibility while
maintaining reliable engine performance.

High sulphur fuel and harsh operating conditions require increased

cylinder oil performance for neutralization, detergency and
dispersancy. Extended engine operation with low sulphur fuel, or
even Marine Diesel Oil or Marine Gas Oil, is also required. These
conflicting requirements are usually addressed by using two
cylinder oils (typically 40BN and 70BN) and a sulphur dependent
feed rate adjustment, according to the engine manufacturer’s
recommendation. This is to be able to cope with the variability of the
fuel’s sulphur content, particularly when in reduced load operation.

The Wärtsilä Blending on Board system provides a unique, flexible

solution to these challenging requirements. The concept is to keep
the constant low cylinder oil feed rate optimal, while adjusting the
base number (30-120 BN) according to the fuel sulphur content in
relation to the relevant regulations and the
engine operational load pattern.

Additional significant advantages of the BOB

system include the replenishment of the main
engine with new system oil, and the auxiliary
4-stroke engine oil with new lubrication oil.
The XRF analyzer will also allow a continuous
monitoring of various engine fluids, including
an analysis of the true FE content for both
corrosive and abrasive iron wear.

18
2-stroke engines

ENGINE CONTROL RETROFIT PACKAGE FOR RND, RL

AND RTA ENGINES

A control system upgrade to reduce maintenance costs, prolong the

life of the equipment, and to reduce off-hire risks.

The DENIS-R controls system retrofit packages are designed for the
Sulzer Bridge Control SBC7/7.1, or for any make of remote control
systems that experience major operational difficulties or remote
control issues.

These packages provide the appropriate remote control retrofit and

engine interface adaptation to ensure safe and reliable operation.
This is far more beneficial than maintaining at high cost the
existing pneumatic control system with the increasing risk that
spare parts with a limited lifetime will not be available, or
buying from other control system suppliers with no
Wärtsilä certified service.

Furthermore, by neglecting
to upgrade an ageing control
system increases the possibility
for serious maneuvering failures
and the risk of going off-hire. As an
OEM, Wärtsilä provides the relevant
technological expertise and know-how
needed for such an upgrade. Wärtsilä
has extensive competence in installing
and commissioning such projects
in cooperation with a certified
supplier for remote control
systems.

regulations)
—— Easy to install

20
2-stroke engines

WÄRTSILÄ FAST UPGRADE

Unburnt fuel from the sac volume of a classical injector leads

to incomplete combustion, which increases emissions and fuel
consumption. This also forms increased combustion deposits in
the exhaust gas system and piston running components, which
may lead to extra maintenance costs for cleaning or component
replacements.

The Fuel Activated Sacless Technology (FAST) reduces the amount

of unburnt fuel and reduces fuel consumption. It improves the
combustion quality significantly and lowers hydrocarbon and carbon
monoxide emissions.

Service experience proves that the exhaust gas and piston

running components of engines operated with FAST nozzles are
considerably cleaner than those of other engines. FAST nozzles
have been designed to reach longer lifetime than classical injection
nozzles, and have lengthened the time between overhauls of up to
18.000 running hours.

WÄRTSILÄ REMOTE OPERATIONAL SUPPORT (ROS) FOR

2-STROKE ENGINES

Modern two-stroke engines are becoming increasingly complex in

order to meet the demands of greater energy efficiency and more
stringent emission regulations. This complexity, combined with the
widening crew skill gap, poses serious cost and operational risks for
vessel operators. Wärtsilä ROS solves these challenges by acting
as a virtual member of the crew, available 24/7 to provide expert
remote support and guidance for troubleshooting and maintenance
using specialist diagnostic tools.

22
2-stroke engines

WÄRTSILÄ MARINE LNG CONVERSION

Concern for the marine environment is rising and new measures

have been, and will continue to be implemented to protect the
oceans and seas. Switching to an environmentally friendly fuel
can be considered a way of future-proofing it against tightening
regulations. Liquefied natural gas, or LNG, is an attractively priced
and sustainable fuel that reduces environmental risks and harmful
emissions. Using LNG engines decreases fuel costs while ensuring
compliance with increasingly stringent regulations.

Whether a vessel can be converted to operate on LNG depends

mainly on the space required by the LNG tanks and additional
equipment required. Wärtsilä can manage your project on all
aspects from feasibility studies, financing solutions, solution
proposals, execution planning and implementation to full EPC
solution.

AUTOMATIC FUEL SWITCH &

MARINE DIESEL FUEL COOLER UNIT

A solution for safe low sulphur fuel adoptation for vessels operating
in Sulphur Emission Control Areas (SECA).

Vessels operating in SECAs need to reduce Sulphur Oxide (SOX)

emissions in accordance with the revised Marpol Annex VI, which
contains regulations on the prevention of air pollution from ships.
The Wärtsilä Automatic Fuel Switch and Marine Diesel Fuel (MDF)
Cooler Unit is a solution for low sulphur fuel adoption for vessels
operating in SECAs, switching from the use of HFO to continuous
or temporary operations using LFO. An uncontrolled changeover
may cause severe damage to the injection equipment and increase
maintenance and spare part costs. In worst case scenarios, it may
cause a complete loss of propulsion power.

The Automatic Fuel Switch, which controls the temperature change

before the fuel injection equipment is, together with the MDF Cooler
Unit, a solution for switching from HFO to LFO fuel, and vice versa.
The MDF Cooler Unit, which ensures controlled cooling, and the
correct fuel oil injection viscosity and temperature, is a solution for
continuous LFO operation.

WÄRTSILÄ OIL MIST SEPARATOR FOR

ENGINE CRANKCASE VENTILATION

The Wärtsilä Oil Mist Separator for engine crankcase ventilation

removes more than 98 percent of the oil mist in the crankcase
ventilation gas. The oil mist resembles smoke since the droplets
are very small in size, between 0.1 and 2 μm, which is why it has
previously been difficult to remove them effectively.

The key component in the module is an electrically driven separator.

The engine crankcase ventilation gas is fed to the separator where
the oil particles are centrifuged and collected in a small container.
The oil is then fed back via a drain pipe to the engine. A frequency
converter boosts the speed of the electric motor to improve
separation efficiency. The separator unit is regulated by a throttle
valve on its inlet pipe to match the gas flow from the engine or
engines.

26
4-stroke engines

WÄRTSILÄ TURBOCHARGER WASH

The Wärtsilä Turbocharger wash is a cost effective and efficient

means of preventing the unexpected and maintaining the
turbocharger in good operating condition.

Regular cleaning to remove the build-up of deposits on the turbine

and compressor sides of turbochargers extends the interval
between overhauls and keeps them in good operating condition. To
facilitate this maintenance routine, Wärtsilä offers a fully-automated
wash unit, which eliminates the need for manual timing of the wash
sequence, and the manual opening and closing of valves. The wash
unit controls the wash sequence from the PLC or from a separate
control unit.

Operating principle:
A counter, which can be set between 5 and 500 hours, keeps
the operator informed of the running hours accumulated so that
the wash can be initiated at the appropriate time. The washing
sequence is started from the control and monitoring system (WOIS)
in the control room, or from the local control panel.

4-STROKE ENGINE ROOMS

The Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) convention in its successive

forms is generally regarded as the most important of all international
treaties concerning the safety of merchant ships. The main objective
of the SOLAS convention is to specify minimum standards for the
construction, equipment and operation of ships, related to their
safety.

Wärtsilä SOLAS solutions are designed to prevent the unexpected

in regard to injuries, engine room fires, material and capital
damages, or off-hire. Furthermore, SOLAS upgrades ensure that
the requirements of classification societies, flag administrations, and
port authorities are met.

Wärtsiläs SOLAS solution options consist of maintenance sets,

splash guard solution improvements, upgrades for hot surfaces
protection solutions, and SOLAS compliance audits.

WÄRTSILÄ WIRELESS BIG-END BEARING

TEMPERATURE MONITORING

The Wireless Big-End Bearing Temperature Monitoring system

provides real-time temperature monitoring of the connecting rod big
end bearings.

This state-of-the-art wireless system improves operational safety

by continuously monitoring the temperature of the bearings. Any
uncharacteristic deviation in the bearing temperature results in an
immediate warning signal. The engine can then be stopped in an
orderly fashion allowing troubleshooting to be carried out in good
time before actual damage occurs. The system gives real-time, first-
hand data, thereby preventing damage to the big-end bearings of
the connecting rod, which is one of the most common reasons for
four-stroke engine breakdowns.

WÄRTSILÄ OPEN LOOP SCRUBBER SYSTEM

Wärtsilä exhaust gas cleaning technology is an economical and

environmentally friendly solution for tackling all existing and future
SOx emission regulations, and provides flexibility and reliable
operations wherever you operate. The scrubber system is designed
to remove SOx from the exhaust and operates utilising seawater.

The open loop scrubber system is our most straightforward

scrubbing method. It utilizes the natural alkalinity in seawater for
scrubbing, and does not need caustic soda. This method can be
used in most seas around the world, where alkalinity levels are high.

Exhaust gas enters the scrubber and is

sprayed with seawater, the SOx in the
exhaust reacts with water and forms
sulphuric acid. Chemicals are not required
since the natural alkalinity of seawater
neutralises the acid. Wash water from the
scrubber is treated and monitored to ensure
that it conforms to MEPC 184(59) criteria and
can be discharged into the sea with no risk of
harm to the environment.

50
Environmental Services

WÄRTSILÄ CLOSED LOOP SCRUBBER SYSTEM

Wärtsilä exhaust gas cleaning technology is an economical and

environmentally friendly solution for tackling all new and existing SOx
emission regulations, and provides flexibility and reliable operations
wherever you operate. The scrubber system is designed to remove
SOx from the exhaust and operates utilising wash water.

The Wärtsilä closed loop scrubber system works continuously in

closed loop, which means that one does not need to worry about
sea water alkalinity levels. This system is best suited for full time
operation in low alkalinity areas (e.g. Great Lakes).

In a closed loop scrubber system, the exhaust gas enters the

scrubber and is sprayed with sea water that has been mixed with
caustic soda (NaOH). The sulphur oxides in the exhaust react with
this mixture and are neutralised. A small bleed-off is extracted from
the closed loop and treated to fulfil IMO requirements. Cleaned
effluents can be safely discharged
overboard with no harm to the
environment.

If operation in zero discharge mode is

requested, the effluent can be led to a
holding tank for scheduled and periodical
discharge.

51
Upgrade solutions

WÄRTSILÄ HYBRID SCRUBBER SYSTEM

Wärtsilä provides hybrid scrubber system solutions which have the

flexibility to operate in both open and closed loop using seawater to
remove SOx from the exhaust. This provides a flexibility of operation
in low alkaline waters, as well as the open ocean.

When at sea the switch can be made to open loop using only
seawater. The sulphur oxides in the exhaust react with the water to
form sulphuric acid. Chemicals are not required since the natural
alkalinity of seawater neutralizes the acid.

When required to switch to closed loop, for instance whilst entering

a port in a low alkalinity area, the natural alkalinity of seawater is
boosted by an alkali which uses caustic soda (NaOH) as a buffer.

Wärtsilä can manage your project on all
aspects from feasibility studies, financing solutions, solution
proposals, execution planning and implementation to full EPC
solution.

TRAILING EDGE ADJUSTMENT FOR HEAVY RUNNING

PROPELLERS

A propeller is engineered to last throughout the lifetime of a vessel.

During its operation factors, such as biological growth on the hull
and a change in operating conditions, can result in the relationship
between the propeller and the engine being disturbed.

When the effect becomes too serious, engine overload is inevitable.

In most cases, this is noticeable by black smoke emerging from
the exhaust pipes. This results in higher fuel consumption and
increased wear to the pistons, liners and valves, and with that higher
maintenance costs. It is estimated that 20% of the world’s fleet
suffers from heavy running propellers, whilst the solution by means
of modification is within reach and has proven to be very effective.

The propeller is designed with a certain sea margin and/or light

running margin to ensure efficient performance, even when the
vessel is experiencing increased resistance like heavy weather
conditions. When the propeller is heavy running, the rotation rate
at service speed is reduced significantly. This means that full power
absorption during conditions where there is increased resistance, or
even during trials, cannot be realized normally. This could even affect
the vessel’s speed during service conditions.

REFURBISHING OF INJECTION VALVES FOR DUAL FUEL

ENGINES

Globally available exchange parts and locally offered refurbishing

services reduce the operation expenses of the installations.

Wärtsilä refurbishing solutions offer a new dimension in the reduction

of maintenance costs. Globally available exchange parts and locally
offered refurbishing services reduce the operation expenses of the
installations.

For Wärtsilä 32DF, Wärtsilä 34DF and Wärtsilä 50DF engines, when
the lifetime of the pilot side of the dual-fuel injection valve is reached,
the valve is to be replaced. As an option to reduce maintenance
expenses without compromising quality, Wärtsilä offers refurbishing
of the valve. Two options are available: refurbishing of the customer’s
own components or the use of exchange parts.

The Wärtsilä refurbishing services are available in various authorized

workshops in all regions of the world. In comparison to the global list
price of a new part, the service costs are dramatically lower, without
compromising the quality and lifetime of the components.

96

CLASS APPROVED PROPELLER SHAFTS AND RUDDER

STOCKS REPAIR

A bent shaft can cause premature wear of the bearing lines,

gearboxes and/or couplings, and in a worst case scenario can
put the vessel out of service. In most cases, the primary option
for resuming operations quickly and economically is to cold
straightenthe shaft, rather than purchase a new one. The Wärtsilä
propulsion workshop in Denmark has developed a unique technique
for cold straightening, and can repair shafts of all types and sizes.
Many jobs can be completed within 24–48 hours from arrival at our
workshop. Classification societies consider this Wärtsilä solution to
be permanent, and an individual certificate is issued on each repair.

Cold straightening is performed using a hydraulic press, numerically

controlled. This method does not affect the metallurgy of the shafts,
it releases stress from the material, and allows full recovery of the
geometry of the shaft with the same tolerances as for a new shaft.

WÄRTSILÄ PROPULSION CONDITION

MONITORING SERVICE

To successfully manage a fleet, risks must be assessed – including

the condition of propulsion equipment. As propulsion machinery
is largely mounted underwater, it cannot be physically examined
internally without going into dry dock. The Wärtsilä Propulsion
condition monitoring service (PCMS) is class-approved and
eliminates the need to enter a dry dock for visual inspections. The
service provides you with up-to-date and in-depth information about
the condition of your vessel’s propulsion equipment.

The Wärtsilä Propulsion condition monitoring service provides you

with real-time advice and regular reports about the condition of your
machinery. With PCMS you can improve your vessel’s availability,
reliability and profitability, while reducing risks and maintenance
costs.

PCMS measures vibrations and oil condition in order to effectively

monitor gears, bearings, the propeller and other propulsion
equipment components. The service also gathers operational
parameters from the propulsion control system.

64 000 HOURS
OVERHAUL OF MARINE
REDUCTION GEARBOX

After 10 years of service, an

overhaul is recommended
in order to ensure the
continued functionality of
your marine gearbox. The
gearbox will then have been
running for more than 64
000 hours, which in most
cases equals more than 2.7
billion revolutions. Despite the rigid housing, under normal operating
conditions the shafts will always have a small deflection due to
the heavy weight from the clutch and flanges. This deflection, plus
possible pollution in the oil, vibration, and other factors, will affect
the condition of the bearings after many years of operation. The life
span of certain bearings is, therefore, certainly limited.

To prevent costly unanticipated downtime and off-hire for the ship,

Wärtsilä provides 64 000 hours overhaul service for gearboxes.

WÄRTSILÄ THRUSTER PRESERVATION BAG

In an economically challenging market, many offshore operators

will lay-up their assets. During this stacking period, which may
be short- or long-term, it is essential that the assets are properly
maintained. Rigs that are not deemed to be economically viable
at this current time, may well be in high demand when the market
recovers. With the Wärtsilä Thruster Preservation Bag, the thrusters
are safe and fully protected against corrosion, marine growth, and oil
contamination. By safely protecting the thrusters, the time between
overhauls (TBO) can be extended.

new parts or complete systems fit in the intended void space,
and will any modification be needed? Resolving issues like these
requires the support of technical experts that not only understand
your equipment, but your business as well. With Wärtsilä’s 3D
Measurement and scanning services, we can answer your questions
and support you in making the best decisions to optimize your
vessel’s propulsion equipment.

WÄRTSILÄ ALIGNMENT & MEASUREMENT SERVICES

The best way to keep on top of alignment problems is to prevent

them from even becoming one. That’s why at Wärtsilä we
have advanced solutions for aligning all types of rotating and
nonrotating equipment.

With extensive knowledge and understanding of how propulsion

systems behave and should be maintained, Wärtsilä has become
a leading supplier of marine propulsion systems, from the engine
to the propeller and everything in between.

From providing accurate measurements to detecting vertical or

horizontal misalignment, we offer all-encompassing alignment and
measurement services using our patented gyro laser technology.

With our ground-breaking technology engineers can compare the

bending curve against the bearing load and restore the shaft line
to its correct position within two hours.

111
Expertise services

WÄRTSILÄ EMISSION MEASUREMENT SERVICES

Emissions measurement by Wärtsilä engineers ensures

compliance with environmental regulations. The analysis results
give an overview of the engine’s condition and indicate which
components need to be adjusted to reach emission limits and
improve performance.

Tighter environmental regulations call for advanced emission

controls and near-zero diesel emission levels. Emissions limits are
set by the authorities in most industrialised countries, with regular
measurements to check compliance. Targeting lower emission
levels means that the methods for measuring and controlling
them must become more accurate and reliable.

112
Expertise services

WÄRTSILÄ PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENT SERVICES

Verification of the real performance of a power system is an

important issue for the owner of an engine-based installation.
The performance parameters can include fuel consumption,
power output, noise, temperature and vibration. Optimising these
parameters can help to maintain and improve the operational
economy of the power system and ensure compliance with
existing standards and regulations.

113
Expertise services

WÄRTSILÄ TROUBLESHOOTING MEASUREMENT

SERVICES

Issues such as engine vibration, noise, poor performance, and

unwanted shutdowns often require specialist attention rather
than routine maintenance. Wärtsilä troubleshooting measurement
services not only help to identify the root causes of faults,
they can also help to improve the operational economy of the
power unit and ensure compliance with existing standards
and regulations. These services can provide the data needed
to reduce noise and vibration on a cruise ship, for example, or
reduce downtime and fuel consumption in a power plant.
