• Mumps is common Respiratory viral communicable


disease.
• Mumps is a contagious disease that is caused by the
mumps virus.
• Mumps is an acute viral infection that belong
Paramyxoviruses family.
Causative Agent- Paramyxovirus / Myxovirus

Communicable Period : 7 Days before & 7 Days after onset of parotid


gland Swelling.

Isolation Time : 14 Days (2weeks)


Route of Entry : Respiratory Route/ Nasopharyngeal
MODE OF TRANSMISSION

• Respiratory Drop Nuclei


• Direct contact with infected person
SOME FACTS

• Before the development of vaccination & the


introduction of a vaccine, it was a common childhood
disease world wide.
• Virus can also isolate from salivary gland(Parotid gland),
urine, blood, Human Milk, CSF

• Mostly mumps occur in winter season, but seen in any


season.
• Mostly occur in 5 to 9 years children, but severe in adult
compare to children.
• Maternal Milk provide 6 month’s immunity for mumps in
baby.
SIGN & SYMPTOMS

• An estimated 40% mild cases are Asymptomatic.


• Ear ache (specially in Night)
• Parotid gland swelling with painful chewing & pain.
• Chipmunk face
• Dry mouth
• Coughing
SIGN & SYMPTOMS (CONT..)

• Dysphagia
• Anorexia
• Fever ( Viral Disease)
• Tachycardia
• Headache
• Muscle pain
• Sore throat
DIAGNOSIS

• History Taking
• Physical Examination
• Confirmed diagnosis:- Saliva swab culture Test
Nested PCR
ELISA
MANAGEMENT

• There is no medication to treat mumps because


it’s a viral disease so no pharmacological
Treatment available.
• Only prophylactic management / Prevention.
VACCINATION:-

Mumps vaccine MMR vaccine


• Dose:- 0.5 ML Dose :- 0.5 ML
• Time :- after 12 months Time :- 12 to15 Months
• Route :- I.M Route :- S.C
• Efficacy :- 95% Efficacy :- 95%
MMR is not a part of NIS
COMPLICATION

• In children :- Aseptic Meningitis


Deafness
Encephalitis
. In adult male:- Orchitis
. In Female :- Oophoritis
COMPLICATION (CONT..)

GIT COMPLICATION (4%) :-


Pancreatitis , nausea, vomiting, upper abdomen pain.
Rare Complications :- Myocarditis
Facialpalsy
Arthritis
Thyroiditis
Prostatis
NURSING MANAGEMENT

• The child must rest in bed until the fever the goes away.
• Isolate the child, to prevent spreading the disease to others.
• Use analgesics and anti-pyretic to ease symptoms.
• Drink plenty of water.
• Avoid sour foods.
