Chapter 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This study tackles the possible problem that smartphones have on the academic record or

performance of senior high school student, we want to conduct this study to see if smartphones

have a negative impact on the academic performance of students or not.

Introduction

Smartphones come with camera and other multimedia phone functions. Several more,

including a sound recording capability, a video function, and more. These characteristics help

pupils to successfully drive their learning processes and aspirations. These days, employing

smartphones in the classroom as a necessary learning aid is incredibly common. In the age of

digital education, it is projected that physical books and study materials will be replaced in

classrooms by smartphones, tablets, or laptops. Schools are forced to cancel real lessons in order

to use virtual classroom apps during the pandemic crisis. Supporting this type of learning makes

the employment of mobile phones in education more obvious.

Nowadays, smartphones have become a part of every person's life. Globally, "People

around the world have adopted this new and exciting technology as one of the most important

required facilities in their everyday life" (Fawareh & Jusoh, 2017, p.1). Globally, the explosion

of smartphones and its related devices has greatly transformed teaching and learning in

developed nations where developing nations are not the exception (Tagoe, 2014). So as student

researchers we would like to conduct this research to know the effectiveness of learning from

smartphones.

The newest trend in higher education is the usage of cellphones for learning, where an

computer set may not be required for every person to access electronic learning resources.

Learning has become more flexible because to smartphones, easy and have reduced the overall

inherent disadvantages of traditional classroom education. For instance, a smartphone enables

pupils to access learning resources whenever they want, Since this possibility is only a feature of

smartphones, it is very affordable and available wherever. Technology's rapid development has

greatly improved people's quality of life. particularly in the field of education. "Smartphones, the

Internet-enabled devices incorporated with computer applications and software, are among the

eminent breakthroughs in this latest century" (Foen, Hassan, Nor, Malek, 2017). This study aims

to ascertain the types of fuels that students should or should not utilize. using smartphones for
education and its impacts. Ever since the adoption of smartphones in learning among tertiary

students. The purpose of the study is to determine senior high school students use of smartphones

and its effect on learning activities in the Eusebio high school to bring out strategies on how

Modern smartphones perform the same functions as portable computers. Your phone's

ROM, or read-only memory, is where you may put all of your media, files. For fundamental

system boot-up tasks, they frequently utilise ROM. The main purpose of ROM in an electronic

device is to control essential system operations. The permanence it offers enables the electronic

equipment to operate consistently. Smartphones have evolved into a multitasking and

productivity tool in today's environment. (Motiso, Desmond. 2022)

Battery Life is the duration a device can operate on one charge, often measured in hours,

such as a phone lasting from 8 am to 5 pm on a full charge (9-hour battery life). Factors

impacting battery life include device specifications, battery capacity, usage patterns, temperature,

and network reception. While Battery Capacity is the amount of electricity that can be stored or

held in a battery. (Ogodogun, Jeffrey. 2021)

Statement of the Problem

This study seeks to further understand the connection between mobile devices and their

effects on the learning of senior high school students.

1. What is the effect of the amount of available storage on smartphones on

students' capability to effectively access and manage educational resources?

2. Does the battery life of smartphones affect the duration of uninterrupted study and

learning activities among senior high school students at Eusebio High School?
3. What impact do the operating systems (e.g., Android, iOS) of smartphones used by

senior high school students at Eusebio High School have on their overall learning experience and

productivity?

4. What is the relationship between the processing power (CPU speed) of smartphones

used by senior high school students at Eusebio High School correlate with their academic

performance?

Research Hypothesis

This study is designed to assess the hypothesis that smartphone specifications have NO

impact on the learning effectivity of students.

No: There is NO significant relationship between the impact of smartphone specification

on senior high school student’s learning

Conceptual Framework

The paradigm of the study shown in figure 1 illustrated the conceptual framework of the

study. The elements of the study are represented in the conceptual framework. It utilized the

three boxes, the input, process, and lastly the output in order to find out the Impact of

Smartphone Specification on the Learning Effectivity of Senior high school Students at Eusebio

High School.

Figure 1: The Conceptual Paradigm of the Study

The study's input consist of two parts: the first part examine the impact of smartphone

storage and battery capacity on students' learning experiences and academic performance. The

second part provides insights into the correlation or connection between smartphone

specifications and the effectiveness of learning.

The process box includes the data gathering procedure, survey, and coding. After all the

evaluation, the output box aims to gather the data on the assessment of the impact of

Smartphones on the learning effectivity among Senior high school students at Eusebio High

School.

The study's output box is intended to collect data on the assessment of the impact of

Smartphones on the learning effectivity among Senior high school students at Eusebio High

School, as well as recommendations that will help students at Eusebio High School gain more

knowledge about the use and the impact of Smartphones on the learning effectivity of the

students in Eusebio High School.

Theoretical Framework

The self-regulated learning theory, according to the principle of self-regulated

learning, learners can take control of their own learning. This hypothesis can be applied to

cellphones and learning in the following ways:

Setting Goals: Students can use their smartphones to define learning objectives and make plans.
Planning and Organization: Smartphones include tools that can assist students in managing their

time and work.

Self-Monitoring: Students can track their progress and evaluate their performance. Smartphones

provide pupils with easy access to instructional materials and information.

Learning styles: Apps that support various learning styles are available to students. Smartphones

can be used for self-reflection as well as receiving criticism from peers and teachers. When

utilizing cellphones for learning, students must strike a balance and prevent distractions.

Significance of the Study

The results of this study may become a significant benefit to the following individuals:

Students. As they will be able to gauge the effects of smartphones on themselves and

further understand the state in which they are affected due to smartphones, whether for the good

or for the bad.

Educators. This will allow educators, teachers, and mentors to see how exactly

smartphones will affect their students in their academic performances.

Researchers. This will act as another source of reliable information for other future

researchers that can further contribute to society and the field of research.

Parents. Understanding the effects of smartphones on learning allows parents to properly

guide their children's smartphone use and maximize their learning experiences.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This study aims to learn more about the connection between smart phone specifications

and how it impacts senior high school students' learning effectiveness.

Definition of Terms

For a better understanding of the study. The following terms are defined operationally.

Aspirations: Goals, ambitions, or desires the individuals strive to achieve.

Digital education: The use of digital technologies and resources for teaching and

learning.
Effectiveness of learning: The degree to which learning experiences and interventions

achieve their intended outcomes.

Electronic learning resources: Digital resources used for educational purposes, such as

e-books, online courses, and educational websites.

Hardware: Device's internal and external equipment that enable it to perform major

functions

Internal storage: Space available in a device to keep system files, applications, and user

files.

Learning activities: Tasks, exercises, or experiences designed to facilitate learning.

Learning processes: Methods and activities involved in acquiring knowledge,

understanding, and skills.
