Welcome, Ramadan!
As-salaam 'alaykum!
Congratulations on receiving your Ramadan Activity Book
and most importantly on reaching this very blessed time of year!
We are so excited about the fun activities you will be doing with us
this month! Before you get started, here are some important things
to know about Ramadan:
1- Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic (Hijri) calendar. It
comes after Sha'baan and right before Shawwaal.
2- The word Ramadan (in Arabic: ‫ )َرَم َض ان‬comes from the word ‫َرِم َض‬
[ramiḍa] or ‫[ الَّرَم ُض‬ar-ramaḍ] which refer to "scorching heat" or "
intense heat." When the naming of the Islamic months took place,
Ramadan was the month that fell in the intensely hot summer
season and therefore carried this name.
3- Ramadan is the month in which the Quran was sent down and
fasting was decreed. Fasting in Ramadan was established as an
obligatory observance in the 2nd year after the Hijrah (migration of
the Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬from Makkah to Madinah) along with the duty
imposed upon Muslims on paying Zakat (alms tax, poor-due).
4- During the whole month of Ramadan, we fast from the time of
Fajr until the time of Maghrib. We also try our best to do extra acts
of worship such as reading the Quran, praying at night and giving in
charity, as well as being on our best behavior.
5- Abu Huraira (‫ )رضي هللا عنه‬narrated: Allah's Messenger (‫ )ﷺ‬said,
"When the month of Ramadan starts, the gates of the heaven are
opened and the gates of Hell are closed and the devils are chained."
(Sahih al-Bukhari 1899) Let's make the most of this blessed month
