1. INTRODUCTION

Computer software, is a set of instructions guiding hardware, dictating their

actions, timing, and execution of tasks

2. TYPES OF SOFTWARE
The software includes application software and system software. Computer
software is a set of instructions that guide computer hardware on what
tasks to perform. Software gives life to the computer and is divided into
application software and system software.

a) APPLICATION SOFTWARE
Application Software stands as a testament to the user-centric aspect of
computing. These programs are designed with specific tasks in mind,
empowering users to accomplish various activities. Examples include word
processing software such as Microsoft Word, WordPad, and Notepad for
document creation, database software like Oracle and Microsoft Access for
data storage and operations, spreadsheet software like Microsoft Excel for
organizing data and performing calculations, and presentation software
such as Microsoft PowerPoint for displaying information in slides. Internet

browsers like Google Chrome, Firefox, and Safari serve as gateways to the
online world. Application Software breathes life into the computer by
facilitating user-driven functionalities.

b) SYSTEM SOFTWARE

System software serves as the backbone of a computer system, providing

the essential functions necessary for the hardware and application software
to operate smoothly. This critical layer of software is designed to manage
and control the computer's hardware components, ensuring efficient
utilization of resources such as the central processing unit (CPU), memory,
and storage devices. Operating systems, a prominent category of system
software, facilitates user interaction with the computer by providing a user
interface and managing tasks such as file management, process
scheduling, and device drivers. System software plays a crucial role in
optimizing the overall performance, stability, and security of a computer
system, serving as an invisible force that enables users to harness the full
potential of their hardware and run diverse applications with ease.

i. OPERATING SYSTEMS
Operating Systems (OS) form a computer's functionality, acting as an
intermediary between users and hardware. For desktop and laptop
computers, Microsoft Windows, Linux, and macOS are prominent OS
options. Microsoft Windows, a creation of Bill Gates' Microsoft, has various
versions satisfying different needs. macOS, developed by Apple's Steve
Jobs and Steve Wozniak, is made for Macintosh computers. Linux, a free
and open-source OS developed by Linus Torvalds, is widely used. Mobile
devices predominantly run on Android and Apple iOS, with Android being
the primary choice for mobile phones and tablets, while iOS is reserved for
iPhones and iPads. Operating Systems provide the foundation upon which
Application Software executes, enabling user interaction.

ii. UTILITY SOFTWARE

Within the vast expanse of System Software, Utility Software emerges as
the silent caretaker, ensuring the smooth operation and maintenance of
computer systems. This category includes essential tools such as antivirus
software for security, backup software for data protection, disk
compression tools for optimizing storage, and file managers for efficient
organization. Utility Software contributes to the overall health and
performance of the computer, often working discreetly in the background
to keep the system running optimally.
