COLLECTS AND READINGS

Collect: Almighty God, whose Son revealed in signs and miracles the wonder of your saving presence:
Renew your people with your heavenly grace, and in all our weakness sustain us by your mighty power;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

First Reading ~ Jonah 3: 1-5, 10

The word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time, saying, ‘Get up, go to Nineveh, that great city, and
proclaim to it the message that I tell you.’ So Jonah set out and went to Nineveh, according to the word
of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly large city, a three days’ walk across. Jonah began to go into
the city, going a day’s walk. And he cried out, ‘Forty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!’ And
the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and everyone, great and small, put on
sackcloth. When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil ways, God changed his mind
about the calamity that he had said he would bring upon them; and he did not do it.

Psalm 62: 5-12 (BCP p. 660)

Wait on God alone in stillness, O my soul; ♦︎ for in him is my hope.
He alone is my rock and my salvation, ♦︎ my stronghold, so that I shall not be shaken.
In God is my strength and my glory; ♦︎ God is my strong rock; in him is my refuge.
Put your trust in him always, my people; ♦︎ pour out your hearts before him, for God is our refuge.
The peoples are but a breath, the whole human race a deceit; ♦︎ on the scales they are altogether
lighter than air.
Put no trust in oppression; in robbery take no empty pride; ♦︎ though wealth increase, set not your
heart upon it.
God spoke once, and twice have I heard the same, ♦︎ that power belongs to God.
Steadfast love belongs to you, O Lord, ♦︎ for you repay everyone according to their deeds.

Epistle Reading – 1 Corinthians 7: 29-31

I mean, brothers and sisters, the appointed time has grown short; from now on, let even those who have
wives be as though they had none, and those who mourn as though they were not mourning, and those
who rejoice as though they were not rejoicing, and those who buy as though they had no possessions, and
those who deal with the world as though they had no dealings with it. For the present form of this world
is passing away.
Gospel/New Testament Reading ~ St Mark 1: 14-20
Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, ‘The
time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.’ As Jesus
passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake—for
they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, ‘Follow me and I will make you fish for people.’ And
immediately they left their nets and followed him. As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee
and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. Immediately he called them; and they left
their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him.
Post-Communion Prayer: Almighty Father, your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ is the light of the
world. May your people, illumined by your word and sacraments, shine with the radiance of his glory,
that he may be known, worshipped, and obeyed to the ends of the earth; for he is alive and reigns with
you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen

THIS WEEK’S NOTICES

A warm welcome to the Rev'd Jimmy Ogwal, who is joining us in the parish during his study for a
Masters degree at Mary Immaculate College. Jimmy is from the Church of Uganda and will be in Limerick
for the next year. We are delighted to have his involvement in the services in the parish during his stay.

Epiphany Carol Service: in the Cathedral at 7pm on Sunday 21st January, featuring music and readings
by candlelight.

Sunday Club: will be held on the first and third Sundays of the month, in the Cathedral. It will include
Godly Play on the first Sundays. There is no Sunday Club on Jan 21st.

Wanted: The Dean is looking for a bedside cabinet (with door), approx. 1 metre high.

The Evergreens: “A very happy new year to everyone and we welcome all back on Tues 23rd Jan at
2:30 pm for the first meeting of the New Year! Oliver Deegan is coming to make St Brigid’s Crosses with
us along with Art O’Leary, another parishioner, and Bianca. These two are students in UL and had been
drafted in to fulfil a request from one of our members. They were scheduled for our May 2023 meeting
but this clashed with another activity in Limerick. The request was to show some of the many things that
a Smartphone/iPhone can do apart from making phone calls! We could call this the Technology meeting
of the Evergreens – ancient usage of rushes to explain Christianity to pagans and modern usage of phones
to access podcasts, talks, hymns etc. on Christianity. Other requests for Apps, torch, blocking calls, taking
and sending photos, etc. will be dealt with as well. Looking forward to seeing everyone!”

Volunteer list for Cathedral: the Dean would be glad to hear from anyone who is available to be
included on a volunteer list for Cathedral events that require extra help at the door, in setting up chairs,
and other activities. Please let the Dean or the Cathedral office know if you’d be willing to be on this rota
and be contacted occasionally when large events are being held.

Murroe-Boher Historical Society: Our first meeting of 2024 will take place at the Fitzgerald Room,
Muintir na Tíre Hall, Murroe, on Thurs January 25, at 8 p.m. sharp, when Sharon Slater will speak to us on
"Victorians and their Vices." When picturing the Victorians, stiff collars, tight corsets and even tighter
morals are often the first images that spring to mind. This talk will delve into the lives of some intriguing
Limerick people and their peculiar lives. Admission €5 to non-members, incl. refreshments. All welcome.

Accommodation wanted: a parishioner is looking for a house in the Limerick City area to rent. Please
contact Anna (087 6985439) with information.

Church of Ireland Youth Department National Youth Forum 2024: Friday 26th to Sunday 28th
January at Dromantine Retreat Centre, Newry. An opportunity for 15-18 year olds to come together
from each of the dioceses. It is hoped that each Diocese will have c. 10 delegates and 2 adult leaders.
UDYC will organise transport to / from the event from Limerick, Nenagh , Roscrea, Portlaoise etc. Food
and accommodation is organised by CIYD for the event. Thus there is no financial cost of attending. The
group will leave after schools, colleges and work finish on Friday and be back home by 5 pm on Sunday. If
you or your son/daughter is interested please let Edward at 087 2907553 or Valerie at 085 2832487 know.

Remembrance Book: Please remember those whose anniversaries occur at this time. Among
them: Peter Keane, Tom Ryan, Agnes O'Callaghan, Martha Gray-Stack, Margaret Hayes, Sophie Moore,
Pa Fitzgerald, Gilbert Smith, Mary O'Connor, Adrian Donahue, Anne Copley, Martha Creamer and Bernie
Long.

Diocesan cycle of prayer: the Bishop writes: “On this Sunday within the annual Week of Prayer for
Christian Unity we rejoice in so much progress already made in our shared ecumenical pilgrimage, we
pray for the avoidance of complacency concerning the painful disunity of Christ’s Body, we remember all
special events and initiatives taking place around the diocese this week, and we pray that God will richly
bless the labours of all churches bearing the name of Christ and striving to further righteousness and faith
in him. We pray too that , ideally, we will strive as Christians to do together everything save those ( few )
things which conscience obliges us to do separately.” Anglican Cycle of Prayer: The Church of South India
(United).

Prayers for the Sick: Your prayers are asked for the sick in our community, especially, Emily; Mac; Alan
Kennedy; Zandra; Kathleen Leddin; Martha McDermott; Sandra Pragnell; Danny Stone; Josh Stone; Terry
Gibson; Sarah B; Cyril Foster; Frances (Kokie) Moore, Patrick Hastings; Patricia Bourke; Jim K, Marie M,
Gerry Grace, Mary Grace, Liz Kaldor, Trevor Richmond, Martin Hogan, Garrett Ryan, BO’D, Sue Gibson,
Denis O’Connell, John Moore, Baby Sloane O' Hanlon, Edel and Doris. NOTE: If you wish to place a name on the
list, please email it to limerickcityparishnews@gmail.com. Under GDPR please ensure you have the consent of the named person(s). For
confidentiality reasons the clergy would appreciate NOT being asked on the status of people. Whilst we appreciate people are showing
care and concern, it can compromise the relationship between pastor and parishioner. Thank you.
