CHAPTER 3

Research Design

The researchers followed a quantitative approach in this study.

The method was chosen to satisfy and meet the objectives of the study

that deals with numbers and variables that is measured in a systematic

way of investigation of phenomena and their relationships. It is used to

answer questions on relationships within measurable variables with an

intention to explain, predict, and control a phenomenon.

In this study, the researchers used correlational research

design. This design is a type of non-experimental research method in

which a researcher measures two variables and understand and

assesses the statistical relationship between them. Therefore, the

researchers want to clarify the relationship between the overall

performance of grade 12 maritime students in Safety 1 and Engine 1

subject.
Population and Sample

In this research study, the researchers used the cochran formula

to know the total number of pariticipants, and because of that the

participants in the research study will be 71 grade 12 Maritime

Students from Southwestern College of Maritime, Business and

Technology Inc. located in Annex Building, Salong Calapan City,

Oriental Mindoro during school year 2023-2024. This study will utilize

Simple Random Sampling in determining the participants. It is a way of

choosing individuals in which all members of the accesible population

are given an equal chance to be selected. This technique is the purest

form of probability sampling frame because it is impartial and ideal for

the quantitative research study (Mahesmari, 2017)

Cochran’s Formula:

𝑛𝑜 = Z2𝑝𝑞

𝑒²

Where:

e is the desired level of precision (margin of error)

p is the (estimated) proportion of the population which has the attribute

in question q is 1 – p
Z is the z-value found in the Z table

𝑛𝑜 = (1.96)2(0.5)
(0.05)

(0.05)²
