‫ الفتاة اسمها فيوال والفتى اسمه سيباستيان لديهم موهبة التنكر والغناء والعزف‬، ‫القصة تبدأ بأخ وأخت توام‬
‫ فيوال‬.‫حدثت عاصفة هوجاء وسقطوا في البحر‬. ‫وكانوا مسافرين في سفينة ويمتعون أهل السفينة بعروضهم‬
‫مع الكابت ومجموعة من البحارة جرفهم البحر لشاطئ قريب وسيباستيان انقذته سفينة انتونيو ( انتونيو انقذ‬
)‫سيباستيان ووقع في حبه‬

The story begins with a brother and sister twins, the girl named Viola and
the boy named Sebastian have the talent to disguise, sing and play and
they were traveling in a ship and enjoying the people of the ship with their
performances. There was a storm and they fell into the sea. Viola, along
with the captain and a group of sailors washed up at a nearby beach, and
Sebastian was rescued by Antonio's ship( Antonio saved Sebastian and fell
in love with him).

‫ على الشاطئ امرأة وحيدة وحزينة جدا وتبكي ومعها قس‬، ً ‫فيوال ظنت أن اخوها مات وهو ظن ذلك أيضا‬
‫ فأخبرها ان هذه المرأة تدعى اوليفيا والدها‬، ‫ سألت فيوال الكابتن عن الذي يحدث‬. ‫وأناس آخرين مكتظين‬
‫توفى في العام الماضي وهذه السنة توفى اخوها وهي تقيم الحداد عليه‬

Viola thought her brother died, and he thought that too, on the beach, a
lonely, very sad woman crying with a priest and other overcrowded people.
Viola asked the captain what was going on, he told her this woman named
Olivia, her father died last year, and her brother passed away this year and
she mourns for him

‫ حزينة على اخيها ولكن لألسف فيوال‬،‫قالت فيوال في داخلها انها تريد مساعدة هذه االنسانة ألنها تشبهها‬
‫ فسألت الكابتن " من هوة المسؤول عن هذه المدينة ( العمدة أو شيء من‬، ‫التستطيع مقابلة اشخاص غرباء‬
‫هذا القبيل ) " اجابها الكابتن " انه شخص يدعى أورسينو لكن ال يوظف عنده النساء وهو يحب أوليفيا‬
"‫ولكن اوليفيا التبادلة المشاعر‬

Viola said inside her that she wanted to help this woman because she looks
like her, sad for her brother, but unfortunately Viola couldn't meet
strangers, so she asked the captain "who's in charge of this city". "He's a
guy named Orsino, but he doesn't hire women, and he loves Olivia, but
Olivia doesn't share feeling with him " the captain replied

‫فقررت فيوال أن تتنكر في زي رجل حتى تعمل في بيت اورسينو واستخدمت مالبس اخوها سيباستيان‬
‫ اورسينو انسان رقيق يحب الموسيقى‬، ‫وساعدها الكابتن في التنكر واطلقت اسم سيزاريو على نفسها‬
.‫ عندما اتته فيوال ( سيزاريو ) قال انه يعرف العزف وعزف له مقطوعات وأغاني‬، ‫والعزف وأغاني الحب‬

Viola decided to dress up as a man to work at Orsino's house, used her

brother Sebastian's clothes, and the captain helped her disguise herself,
Orsino, a gentle man who loved music, playing and love songs. When
Viola came to him (Cesario) said he knew how to play and played him
tracks and songs

‫اورسينو اعجب بسيزاريو جدا وجعله من المقربين إليه وأخبره بأسراره وحبة ألوليفيا وهنا اصبحت فيوال‬
، ‫تكن مشاعر الورسينو ووقعت في حبه ولكنها متنكرة في زي رجل لذلك التستطيع ان تفصح عن مشاعرها‬
‫وبعد ان اصبحت عالقة اورسينو بسيزاريو طلب من الذهاب وأن يخبر أوليفيا بحبه لها‬

Orsino loved Cesario very much, made him close to him, and told him his
secrets and his love for Olivia. Here, Viola became affectionate with him,
fell in love with him, but disguised as a man, she could not express her
feelings

‫ وهنا وقعت فيوال في ورطة فهي تحب‬، ‫ألنه أكثر شخص يتكلم معه عن هذا الموضوع وهو يفهم مشاعره‬
‫ الى بيت‬، ً ‫ ذهب سيزاريو مرغما‬، ‫اورسينو فكيف تذهب لفتاة أخرى وتخبرها انه يحبها؟ الموقف صعب‬
‫ أصر سيزاريو وقال انه لن يبارح مكانه من امام البيت حتى‬.‫اوليفيا وطلب ان يقابلها ولكن اوليفيا رفضت‬
.‫يقابلها‬

Because he is the person he talks to the most about it and he understands

his feelings, and here Viola is involved. She loves Orcino, so how can
Viola go to another girl and tell her that Orcino loves her? hard situation,
Cesario went to Olivia's home and asked to meet her, but Olivia refused.
Cesario insisted that he would not

‫ دخل سيزاريو وقال ان لديه رسالة‬، ‫اقتنعت أوليفيا ووافقت على مقابلة سيزاريو وضعت غطاء على رأسها‬
‫ قالت اوليفيا " تكلم وأنا سأوصل‬. ‫ألوليفيا " أيكم اوليفيا ؟ " قال ذلك ألن اوليفيا كانت جالسة مع خادماتها‬
‫ فكشفت اوليفيا عن نفسها واخبرها‬، ‫لها الرسال نيابة عنك " رفض سيزاريو وقال لن اتكلم الى مع اوليفيا‬
.‫سيزاريو بأن تخرج الخدم فأخرجتهم‬

Olivia is convinced, agrees to meet Cesario, puts a cap on her head, and
Cesario enters and says he has a message for Olivia: "Which one of you is
Olivia? "He said that because Olivia was sitting with her maids. Olivia
said, "Speak and I'll deliver the message for you." Cesario refused and he
said "I will speak only with Olivia" Olivia revealed herself and Cesario
told her to get the servants out she listened and she took them out
‫ قالت اوليفيا " ال اظن ان هذا‬، ‫جاء سيزاريو ( فيوال) بجانبها واخبرها ان تبعد الغطاء حتى يرى وجهها‬
‫جزء من رسالة سيدك ولكن ال بأس سابعد الغطاء " بعدما ابعدت الغطاء بدء سيزاريو ( فيوال ) يتغزل بها‬
.‫ويقول إنها جميلة واستمتعت اوليفيا بصحبته واخبرها سيزاريو ان اورسينو يحبها‬

Cesario (Viola) comes next to her and tells her to take the cover away so he
can see her face, Olivia says, "I don't think this is part of your master's
letter, but I'll take the cover away." After she took the cover off, Cesario
(Viola) starts flirting with her and says she's beautiful, and Olivia enjoyed
his company, and Cesario tells her that Orcino in love with her

‫وظل يخبرها بالكالم الجميل والغزل الى ان وقعت في حبه واخبرت سيزاريو " اخبر سيدك ان يفقد االمل‬
‫بحبي له " وبعد ان خرجت نادت على خادمها مالفولو واعطته خاتمها وقالت له " هذا خاتم سيزاريو سقط‬
‫ اذهب ارجع الخاتم إليه واخبره ان كان يريد أن يعرف ان كان هناك أمل في انني ساحب سيده فليأتي‬، ‫منه‬
" ‫غدا ً بمثل هذا الوقت‬

And he kept telling her sweet words and flirting until she fell in love with
him and told Cesario, "Tell your master to lose hope in my love for him."
And after she went out, she called her servant Malvolio and gave him her
ring and said to him, "This is Cesario's ring that fell from him, go return
the ring to him and tell him if he wants to know if there is any hope that I
would love his master, let him come tomorrow at such a time

‫ ظلت فيوال تفكر بماذا تريد اوليفيا منها واستنتجت انها وقعت في حبها وحزنت‬. ‫وذهب الخادم ونفذ ماطلبته‬
‫ هناك شخصية أخرى السير توبي عم اوليفيا يعيش معها‬. ‫عليها ألنها خدعت ووقعت في حب سيزاريو‬
. ‫ويسبب الكثر من القلق في البيت ومخمور على الدوام‬
And the valet went and did as what she asked for. Viola kept thinking
about what Olivia wanted from her, concluded that she had fallen in love
with her, and felt bad about having been deceived into falling in love with
Cesario. Another character, Olivia's uncle Sir Toby, lives with her, causes
anxiety at home and is always drunk
‫ سير توبي‬.‫ لغات وغني‬4 ‫احضر معه شخص يدعى سير اندروز ( المجنون جدا ) على الرغم من انه يتكلم‬
‫ وهناك خادم اسمه مالفولو شخص متكبر واليبتسم‬.‫خدعه واخبره انه سيزوجه اوليفيا وهو خدع تماما‬
.‫ وقد هدد السير توبي مرة واخبره ان لم يتغير سيجعل أوليفيا تطرده من البيت‬، ‫وكليب‬
He brought with him a man named Sir Andrews (very crazy), even though
he speaks four languages and he is rich. Sir Toby tricked him into
marrying Olivia, and he's completely deceived. A servant named Malvolio,
who was arrogant, never smiles, and gloomy, once threatened Sir Toby and
told him that if he did not change, he will make Olivia throw him outside
the home.
‫ كتبت‬.‫حقد السير توبي على مالفولو واتفق مع الخادمة ماريا أن يطردوه من البيت وقامو بالتخطيط لذلك‬
‫ماريا رسالة ( خطها يشبه خط اوليفيا تماما ) أنها تحب شخص تحت إمرتها واليبتسم وتتمنى لو تراه يبتسم‬
. ‫وتحب حذائه االصفر وكتبت حروف اسمه في الرسالة‬
Sir Toby resented Malvolio and agreed with the maid Maria to have him
thrown out of the house and they planned to do so. Maria wrote a letter
(her handwriting resembles Olivia's) that she loves someone at her
command and does not smile, wishes to see him smile, and loves his
yellow shoes and she wrote the letters of his name on the letter
‫ والسير توبي والخادمة يسخرون‬، ‫فرح مالفولو واصبح يبتسم طوال الوقت ويتمشى بحذائه االصفر‬
‫ يتهدد سير اندروز‬. ‫ أوليفيا انزعجت من مالفولو ومن جرأته المفاجئة وطلبت ان يسجنوه‬. ‫ويضحكون عليه‬
. ‫بالرحيل بين حين وآخر ألن اوليفيا لم تعطه فرصة‬
Malvolio rejoiced, smiling all the time, walking around in his yellow
shoes, and Sir Toby and the maid laughing at him. Annoyed by Malvolo
and his sudden boldness, Olivia demanded that he be imprisoned. Sir
Andrews threatens to leave from time to time because Olivia didn't give
him a chance

‫ وجلس‬، ‫ فيوال ( سيزاريو ) ذهبت ألورسينوا واخبرته ان اوليفيا ال تحبه‬. ‫ولكن سير توبي يقنعة بعكس ذلك‬
‫ سال سيزاريو اورسينو " هل سبق ووقعت في الحب ؟ " اجابه سيزاريو بنعم " كم‬.‫اورسينو يندب حظه‬
" ‫عبرها " سال اورسينو اجاب سيزاريو " في مثل عمرك‬

But Sir Toby convinces him otherwise. Viola (Cesario) goes to Orsino and
tells him that Olivia does not love him, and Orsino sits lamenting his luck .
Orsino Cesario "Have you ever fallen in love? "Cesario answered yes ".
"How old is she?" Orsino asked, and Cesario replied, "At your age

‫ في‬. ‫اجابه اورسينو " فتى مسكين كان يجب ان تحب فتاة بمثل عمرك " كانت فيوال تقصد اورسينو بكالمها‬
‫ طلب منه‬. ‫اليوم التالي جاء المهرج الخاص بأوليفيا الى اورسينو وهو يغني في البيوت مقابل النقود‬
‫اورسينو ان يغني عن الحب وعندما غنى المهرج تاججت مشاعر اورسينو وطلب من سيزاريو الذهاب مرة‬
. ‫أخرى الى أوليفيا‬

Poor boy you should have loved a girl at your own age," Orsino replied.
The next day, Olivia's clown comes to Orsino, singing in houses for money.
Orsino asked him to sing a love song and when the clown sang, Orsino's
.feelings lit up and asked Cesario to go back to Olivia

‫ولما ذهب سيزاريو ورأته اوليفيا فرحت كثيرا وذهبت تتكلم معه وهو يتكلم معها عن حب‬
‫ اخذها‬، ‫سيده لها فأخربته انها ال تحب سيده وانما تحبه هو واعطته قالدة فيها صورتها واخبرته ان يرتديها‬
. " ‫سيزاريو وهو في ورطة وقال لها " ال يوجد في قلبي مكان ألي امرأة‬

And when Cesario went and Olivia saw him, she was very happy and went
to talk to him, and he talked to her about his master's love for her, so she
ruined it, she doesn't love his master, but she loves him, and she gave him
a necklace with her picture in it and told him to wear it.Cesario took her
"".and told her ,"There is no place in my heart for any woman

‫ سير توبي‬,‫ ليس لي مكان هنا ولن تحبني‬، ‫سير اندروز رءاهم يجلسون معا وقال اوليفيا تحب هذا الشخص‬
‫ال يريد من سير اندروز ان يذهب ألنه غني وهو يعطيه الكثير من النقود فأخبر سير اندروز انه فارس‬
.‫وشجاع ويجب أن يذهب للفتي ويبارزه فهو صغير ولن يستطيع الفوز وقام بخداع اندروز‬

Sir Andrews saw them sitting together and said Olivia loves this person, I
have no place here and she won't love me. Sir Toby doesn't want Sir
Andrews to go because he's rich, and he gives him a lot of money, so he
told Sir Andrews he was a brave knight. He has to go to the boy and duel
.him, he's young and weak he can't win, and he cheated Andrews

‫كتب اندروز رسالة واعطاها الى السير توبي واخبره ان يسلمها الى سيزاريو ويطلب منه مقابلته حتى‬
‫ في‬، ‫ أعطي سير توبي الرسالة لسيزاريو فرفض المبارزة فاجبروا سيزاريو على ذلك‬. ‫يتبارزا بالسيوف‬
‫ انتونيو مطارد من قبل الشرطة على هذه‬.‫الوقت نفسه وصل سيباستيان للجزيرة ومعه انتونيو الذي يحبه‬
‫ ولكن ألنه يحب سيباستيان خاطر واتي معه الى الجزيرة واعطاه كل امواله‬، ‫الجزيرة‬

Andrews wrote a letter to Sir Toby, told him to hand it over to Cesario and
asked him to meet him so that they could duel with swords. Sir Toby gives
the letter to Cesario, who refuses to duel but they forced Cesario to do so, at
the same time Sebastian arrives on the island with Antonio, whom he
loves. Antonio is being chased by the police on this island, but because he
loves Sebastian, he risked coming to the island with him and giving him
.all his money

‫ وبينما انتونيو يمشي وجد‬، ‫وذهب كل منهما في طريق مختلف واتفقوا ان يتقابلوا عند مكان اسمه اإلليفانت‬
‫سيباستيان ( فيوال المتنكرة كسيزاريو ) في مبارزة سيوف فهرع لمساعدته والدفاع عنه ومحاربة السير‬
‫ وفجأة أنت الشرطة وقبضوا على انتونيو واخذوه للسجن فأخبرهم أن يصبروا قليال ليتسنى له أخذ‬، ‫اندروز‬
‫ فقال سيزاريو أي اموال تتكلم عنها؟‬، ‫أمواله من سيباستيان‬

And each of them went on a different path and agreed to meet at a place
called the Elephant. Antonio walks and finds Sebastian (Viola disguised as
Cesario) in a sword duel, who rushed to help him, defend him, and fight
Sir Andrews. Suddenly, the police arrest Antonio, take him to jail, he told
them to be a little more patiently so that he can get his money from
?Sebastian. Cesario says, What money are you talking about

‫انا لم التقي بك من قبل ولكن ساعطيك اموال ألنك انقذتني فصدم انتونيو وقال " أنا انقذت حياتك في البحر‬
‫ فيوال استوعبت الوضع وعلمت‬. ‫وهذا جزائي ؟ لم اتوقع ذلك منك يا سيباستيان ! " واخذته الشرطة للسجن‬
‫ فقال السير توبي للسير الدروز " الحق‬، ‫ان سيباستيان على قيد الحياة وراحت تركض مسرعة تبحث عنه‬
" ‫به بسرعة انه جبان وتستطيع هزيمته بدون سيف‬

I've never met you before, but I'll give you money for saving me, and
Antonio was shocked "I saved your life at sea, and that's what I get? I
didn't expect that from you, Sebastian!" The police took him to jail. When
she learned that Sebastian was alive, she rushed in search of him, and Sir
Toby told Sir Andrews "catch up with him quickly, he is a coward, and you

‫ وقابل السير اندروز سيباستيان فضربه بأحدى‬.‫فرح سير اندروز وتحمس وذهب خلف فيوال يطاردها‬
‫القفازات خاصته وبدء بإهانته فغضب سيباستيان واخذ قفازته وضربه واخرج سيفه وهنا تدخل السير توبي‬
.‫وقام بمبارزة سيباستيان وهو في حيرة من أمره من اين اتت هذه الشجاعة المفاجئة‬

Sir Andrews got excited and went after Viola chasing her. Sir Andrews met
Sebastian, hit him with one of his gloves and started insulting him ,
angering Sebastian, took his gloves, beat him, pulling out his sword. Here
Sir Toby stepped in and dueled with Sebastian, confused at where this
.sudden courage came from

‫وفي هذه اللحظة جاءت اوليفيا واوقفت القتال وطردت السير توبي ومجموعته وبدنت تتغزل بسيباستيان ظنا‬
‫ وقال اذا كان هذا حلم الاريد‬،‫ سيباستيان كان مصدوم واصبح ال يفرق بين الواقع والحلم‬. ‫منها انه سيزاريو‬
‫ان استيقظ‬

At this moment Olivia came and stopped the fighting, expelled Sir Toby
and his group and started flirting with Sebastian, thinking he was Cesario .
Sebastian was shocked and couldn't differentiate between reality and
dream, and said if this was a dream I don't want to wake up

‫ السير توبي‬.‫ تنكر بزي قس كبير بالسن وبدء بالمزاح معه‬، ‫ذهب المهرج الى الخادم المسجون مالفولو‬
‫ ماريا وسير توبي على عالقة واتفقوا ان يحضوا ببعض الخصوصية‬. ‫والخادمة ماريا معه يضحكون عليه‬
‫ عاد المهرج الى مالفولو وطلب منه مالفولو ورقة وحبر حتى يكتب رسالة ألوليفيا‬. ‫وذهبوا الى الغرفة‬
.‫واعطاه المهرج ما يريد‬

The clown went to the imprisoned servant Malvolio, disguised as an old

priest and began joking with him. Sir Toby and maid Maria are laughing at
him. Maria and Sir Toby had an affair, and they agreed to have some
privacy and went to the room. The clown returned to Malvolio and
Malvolio asked him for paper and ink to write a letter to Olivia, and the
.clown gave him what he wanted

‫ذهب سيباستيان الى المكان الذي اتفق للذهاب اليه مع انتونيو ولكن انتونيو لم يحضر وجلس يفكر باللذي‬
‫حدث له مع اوليفيا " إما انني جننت أو هي مجنونة ألن الذي حدث غريب او يمكن ان تكون مخطئة وليست‬
‫مجنونة " وفجأة انت اوليفيا وقالت " تعال معي لنذهب للقس ونوثق حبك لي ونقيم عرسنا في عيد ميالدي‬

Sebastian went to the place where he agreed to go with Antonio, but

Antonio didn't show up and sat thinking about what happened to him
with Olivia. "Either I went crazy or she is crazy because what happened is
strange, or she could be wrong and not crazy and suddenly Olivia came
and said, "Come with me, let's go to the priest, notarize your love for me,
"and let's do our wedding on my birthday
‫ وجد‬. ‫ وفي هذا الوقت جاء المهرج الر بيت اوليفيا ويحمل معه رسالة مالفولو‬، ‫سيباستيان ذهب معها‬
‫ ثم اتت الشرطة‬، ‫المهرج الدوق يقف عند الباب وأخبر المهرج ان يذهب وينادي أوليفيا فوافق المهرج‬
‫ومعهم انتونيو فقال سيزاريو ألورسينو " هذا الرجل الذي انقذني " فقال اورسينو " اشعر اني قد رأيته من‬
‫قبل‬

Sebastian went with her, and at this time the clown came to the house of
Olivia and carried Malvolio's message with him. The clown found the
Duke standing at the door and told the clown to go and call Olivia, and the
clown agreed, and the police came along with Antonio, and Cesario told
Orsino, "This is the man who saved me," and Orsino said, "I feel like I've
.seen him before

‫ سال آورسينو الشرطة ماذا يحدث؟‬،‫قال أورسينو " آخر مرة رأيته في الحرب " اتضح ان انتونيو عدوهم‬
‫فلجابوا " هذا انتونيو عدونا الذي قطع قدم ابن أخيك " قال سيزاريو " وهو الذي انقذني " قال انتونيو " أنا‬
‫ اشهر واعطيتك اموالي ثم تنكر كل ذلك ؟" قال أورسينو " ال‬3 ‫لم أتي الى هنا إلى من حبي لك انقذتك قبل‬
"‫ اشهر الضم سيزاريو لخدمتي‬3 ‫تكذب قبل‬

Orsino said, "Last time I saw him in the war," it turns out that Antonio is
their enemy. And they said, "This is Antonio, our enemy, who cut off your
nephew's foot." Cesario said. "And he saved me." Antonio said, "I came
here out of love for you, I saved you 3 months ago, and I gave you all my
money, and then you deny it all?" Orsino said, "Don't lie 3 months ago,
".Cesario joined my service

‫اخذت الشرطة انتونيو ثم جاءت اوليفيا متحمسة لسيزاريو وتعبر عن مشاعرها و فيوال اخبرتها ان تستمع‬
‫ قالت اوليفيا " اذا جئت تعبر عن حبك لي فأنا ليس لدي مشاعر في قلبي لك " انصدم اورسينو‬، ‫لسيدها‬
‫وغضب واخبرها انها قاسية وشتمها وانه ال يحبها بعد اآلن واخبر‬

The police took Antonio, and then Olivia came excited by Cesario and
expressed her feelings, and Viola told her to listen to her master, and
Olivia said, "If you come to express your love to me, I don't have feelings in
my heart for you," Orsino was shocked and got angry and told her that she
was cruel and swear at her and that he didn't love her anymore and told
Cesario to follow him
‫وتبعه سيزاريو وقالت اوليفيا " الی اين تذهب ياسيزاريو هل ستتركني؟ " قال سيزاريو" سأذهب مع الذي‬
‫ اوليفيا صدمت وقالت ال اصدق انني‬، ‫احبه اكثر من حياتي ومن زوجتي اذا تزوجت" تقمص الدور ببراعة‬
‫ احضروا‬،‫خدعت لهذه الدرجة! فأجابها سيزاريو " ومن خدعك ؟ " قالت اوليفيا " هل نسيت بهذه السرعة‬
‫القس بسرعة" فقال اورسينو " الحق بي بسرعة يا سيزاريو " فنادت اوليفيا " سيزاريو يازوجي عد الي‬

Cesario followed, and Olivia said, 'Where are you going, Cesario, will you
leave me?' 'I'll go with the one I love more than my life,' said Cesario, and
my wife if I get married.' He played the role brilliantly, Olivia was shocked
and said I can't believe I had been so deceived! Cesario replied, 'Who

‫غضب اورسينو وقال " زوجك؟!" فبدء سيزاريو يقسم انه ليس زوجها واوليفيا تقول عكس ذلك وقالت‬
‫التخف منه ياسيزاريو خذ ثروتي لك وقل انك زوجي" جاء القس وقالت اوليفيا " اعلن للكل اني تزوجت‬
‫سيزاريو " وقال القس " كالمها صحيح وهو من زوجهم" فقال اورسينو " خذها والتريني وجهك مرة أخرى‬

Orsino got angry and said, "Your husband?!" Cesario swears he is not her
husband, Olivia says otherwise, "Don't be afraid of him, Cesario, take my
fortune to you, and say you are my husband." The priest came and Olivia
said, "I will announce to all that I have married Cesario." The priest said,
"She is right and he is her husband." Orsino said, "Take her and don't

Then Sir Andrews came running to them and full of bruises, "Hurry up,
save Sir Toby from Cesario." Everyone looked at Viola (Cesario) and
Andrews saw him and started cursing at him. Cesario said, "Why are you
insulting me, I did nothing to you?" And suddenly Sir Toby comes into the
house cursing in Cesario and Sebastian comes after him and comes to
?Olivia and starts apologizing. Olivia is surprised, there are two Cesario

Sebastian turned and saw Antonio, and Antonio told him that he had a
twin brother and signalled to Viola. Sebastian said, "Who is this, he looks
like me, and in my whole life I have no brother! Who are you? Where are
your parents?" Viola said, "I am the son of a man named Sebastian, and my
brother Sebastian drowned in the sea," said Sebastian, "and I have a sister
named Viola who drowned in the sea if you were Girl I would cry because
then you would be my sister

forgot to deliver Malvolio's letter, madam. And she said, Read it to us, but
the clown started joking, so she asked someone else to read it. They read

that Maria wrote and deceived him

another lovelorn reply, about how his love for the Lady Olivia has
been tearing him apart. Orsino's servant Valentine, whom Orsino
sent to give his affections to Olivia, returns; Valentine was not
allowed to speak directly to Olivia, but Olivia sent a message, via
her handmaiden, that Olivia will continue to mourn her dead
brother, and will neither allow Orsino to see her or to woo her.
Orsino laments that Olivia does not hold the same deeply felt love
that he professes to have.

Viola lands in Illyria, after a terrible shipwreck in which she was

separated from her twin brother, Sebastian. Viola hopes that her
brother was saved, as she was; the Captain, who also managed to
get ashore, tries to console her of the hopes of finding her brother
alive. The Captain recalls seeing her brother in the water after the
shipwreck, clinging onto a mast, and riding above the waves. As it
happens, the Captain is from Illyria, and tells Viola of Count Orsino,
and of his love for Lady Olivia; the Captain also mentions Olivia's
recent loss of both her father and her brother, and Viola, having
lost her brother as well, commiserates with Olivia's situation. Viola
proposes that she serve Orsino, since he is a good and just man; she
conspires with the Captain that she may be presented to Orsino as a
eunuch, and that her true identity as a foreign woman be concealed.
The Captain agrees to help her, and he leads her to Orsino.

Maria also objects to one of Sir Toby's drinking buddies, Sir Andrew

potential suitor to Olivia. Sir Toby has great affection for Sir
Andrew, but Maria does not; she believes that Sir Andrew is a
drunkard and a fool, and not to be suffered. Sir Toby attempts to
introduce Sir Andrew to Maria; wordplay ensues from a series of
misunderstandings, puns, and differing usages of words. Maria
exits, and Sir Toby and Sir Andrew continue to quibble, with some
amusing results; at last, they decide to start drinking.

taken into the service of Count Orsino. Valentine remarks that
Orsino and Viola, as Cesario, have become close in the short time
that Viola has been employed; indeed, Orsino has already told Viola
of his great love for Olivia. Orsino asks Viola to go to Olivia and
make Orsino's case to the lady; he believes that Viola/ Cesario,
being younger and more eloquent than his other messengers, will
succeed. Viola says she will obey, although she confesses in an aside
that she already feels love for Orsino, and would rather be his wife
than try to woo Olivia for him.

Feste's first appearance in the play; unlike Sir Toby and Sir Andrew,
who make wordplay by mincing each other's meanings, Feste is
more perceptive and quick-witted, and gets into an entertaining
argument with the equally quick-witted Maria. Olivia enters, with
her attendants, and is somewhat displeased and short with Feste;
Feste says she is a fool for mourning her brother, if she knows that
her brother is in heaven. Viola/ Cesario arrives at Olivia's house, and
is admitted after much waiting, and being examined by both Sir
Toby and Malvolio. Viola is brought in to meet Olivia, who finds out
Viola is a messenger on Orsino's behalf, and Olivia discourages
Viola from wooing her for the Count. Viola tries to make Orsino's
suit, though Olivia counters this with elusive and witty remarks;
Olivia begins to show interest in Viola as Cesario in this scene, and
still insists that she cannot love Orsino.

Antonio, a somewhat shady sea-captain who is wanted by Count
Orsino for questionable doings on the seas. Sebastian tells Antonio

Antonio for his kindness in saving him from being drowned, and
resolves that he must be off alone. Antonio asks if he may go with
Sebastian, but Sebastian refuses this kind request, and is gone.

realizes that the ring is proof that Olivia has some affection for her
as Cesario; she regrets that Olivia is in love with her disguise, as that
will come to nothing, and also that she is in love with her master,
but that she can do nothing in her present disguise.

slightly cynical view of women, and will seek to correct it later in the
scene. Feste begins to sing his song, a sad one about love and death, and
when he is done, he is dismissed, and makes a remark about Orsino's
extreme changeability of mood .
Viola attempts to soothe Orsino's melancholy by getting him to accept that
Olivia might not love him, but that perhaps another woman does; Orsino
counters this with the argument that women are very inconstant in their
love, and could not have a feeling as deep as the love he has for Olivia.
Viola knows that this is not true, in light of the great amount of feeling she
has for Orsino; she attempts to persuade him that women are "as true of
heart" as men, by telling him a story she makes up about a sister that loved
only too constantly and too well. Orsino asks Viola to go again to Olivia,
and make his suit; Viola obeys, and sets off to see Olivia again.

approaches, already muttering nonsense about thinking that Olivia
fancies him, and about how things would be if they were married;
this angers Sir Toby and Sir Andrew, who want to beat Malvolio for
his pretension. Malvolio finally spots the letter, and recognizes the
handwriting as Olivia's; he takes the bait completely, believing it to
be proof that Olivia really does love him. Sir Toby and Sir Andrew
marvel at Maria's plan, and how it has worked, and cannot wait to
see Malvolio make an even bigger fool of himself

Sebastian, Viola's brother, is shown alive, and in the company of

Antonio, a somewhat shady sea-captain who is wanted by Count
Orsino for questionable doings on the seas. Sebastian tells Antonio
of his sister, Viola, who he fears has been drowned; he thanks
Antonio for his kindness in saving him from being drowned, and
resolves that he must be off alone. Antonio asks if he may go with
Sebastian, but Sebastian refuses this kind request, and is gone.

Malvolio catches up to Viola, with the ring he was instructed to give

Viola by Olivia. Viola is surprised, since she left no ring with Olivia;
Malvolio grows impatient with Viola's claim to know nothing of the
ring, and he throws it down onto the ground, and storms off. Viola
realizes that the ring is proof that Olivia has some affection for her
as Cesario; she regrets that Olivia is in love with her disguise, as that
will come to nothing, and also that she is in love with her master,
but that she can do nothing in her present disguise.

Sir Toby and Sir Andrew are up late, drinking; Feste joins them, and
they request that he sing a song about love. They proceed to make
a great deal of noise, by singing, drinking, and talking nonsense;
Maria tries to get them to be quiet, but Malvolio is awakened by the
noise, and comes down to berate them for disturbing the
household. Once Malvolio leaves, Maria concocts a plan to make
Malvolio look like a complete fool: since Maria's handwriting is
similar to Olivia's, she will write love letters to Malvolio and make it
look like the letters have come from Olivia. The party decides to try
this out and see if it will work; Maria leaves to go to bed, and Sir
Toby and Sir Andrew decide to drink the rest of the night away.

Viola enters, on her way to see Olivia; she comes across Feste, who
is full of wit and foolery as usual. Feste expresses his dislike for
Viola, which Viola does not take personally; Viola gives him a few
coins for his wordplay, and mentions the wit that it takes to act the
fool as well as Feste does. Viola runs across Sir Toby and Sir Andrew
on her way to visit Olivia; Olivia then comes to meet Viola, and Viola
again attempts to make Orsino's suit to Viola.

Olivia apologizes for the confusion she brought upon Viola with
sending the ring; then, Olivia confesses her affection for Viola/
Cesario, and begs to know if Viola does indeed feel the same way.
Viola says no, then asks

again if Olivia will have anything to do with Orsino; Olivia is

constant in her lack of response to Orsino, but makes one last
attempt to win Cesario over. Viola warns Olivia as best she can,
telling Olivia that "I am not what I am," though Olivia does not
guess at the statement's real meaning (III..139). Of course she is
unsuccessful, and Viola leaves but not without an entreaty to
return.

Sir Andrew finally comes to his senses, realizing that Olivia favors
Cesario far more than she favors him. His friend Fabian tries to
convince him that Olivia is only pretending to favor Cesario, in
order to make Sir Andrew jealous; his lie is well-intentioned, but
does not soothe Sir Andrew's anger. Sir Toby then persuades Sir
Andrew that he should challenge Cesario to a duel, and that, if Sir
Andrew wins, he will surely gain Olivia's affections. Sir Toby tells
him to write a letter of challenge, which Sir Toby will deliver; Toby
actually has no intent of sponsoring a duel, but thinks the exercise
might cool Sir Andrew off a little. Maria then enters, and begs them
all to come see Malvolio, who is acting like a complete idiot in front
of Olivia.

Antonio is slow to leave Sebastian's side, as he fears some accident

may happen to Sebastian since he is completely ignorant of the
country. Sebastian wants to go about and see the sights, but
Antonio tells him that he cannot; Antonio confesses that he was
involved with some piracy against Illyria, and that he is wanted by
the Count because of it. Antonio proposes that they meet up at an
inn in one hour, and that Sebastian can wander about until then;
they part, hopeful of meeting up again without accident.

Maria warns Olivia of Malvolio's very strange behavior; yet, Olivia still
wishes that Malvolio be brought before her. Malvolio is wearing yellow,
cross-gartered stockings, which Olivia abhors; he is careful to point out
what he thinks is his fashionable taste. Malvolio continues his absurdity,
making remarks of unwarranted familiarity, and completely baffling
Olivia with his misguided attempts to be amorous toward her, Olivia
dismisses Malvolio's odd behavior as being some kind of passing
madness, and orders that Malvolio be looked after while she sees to
Cesario, who has supposedly returned.

Sir Toby, Maria, and Fabian approach Malvolio; they treat Malvolio's case
as an instant of witchcraft or possession, and pretend they know nothing
of the real cause of Malvolio's strange behavior. Then, their plan takes a
more malicious turn; not satisfied with the havoc they have already
caused, they decide to make Malvolio go mad, if they can. Sir Andrew
returns, with his "saucy" letter for Cesario, and Viola as Cesario appears,
having patched up any bad feelings over their last dramatic scene.

Sir Toby conveys Sir Andrew's challenge to Viola, and tries to make Viola
shrink from the confrontation by greatly exaggerating Sir Andrew's
meanness and anger. Sir Andrew and Viola come close to some sort of
reluctant confrontation, when Antonio stumbles on them; Antonio is
arrested by officers of the Count, and asks Viola for his purse, mistaking
Viola for her brother Sebastian. Antonio is taken aback when Viola will
not give him his purse, thinking that she, as Sebastian, is ungrateful for
his help; he speaks of rescuing Sebastian from drowning, which lets Viola
know that her brother might be alive. Antonio is dragged away, and
Viola hopes that what Antonio said is indeed true, and that her brother
might have been saved from the wreck.

Feste approaches Sebastian, thinking that Sebastian is 'Cesario'; when

Sebastian tells Feste that he does not know him, nor Olivia, whom Feste
tells him o meet, Feste becomes rather upset, and accuses Sebastian of
"strangeness". Then Sir Andrew comes, and strikes Sebastian out of anger,
as if he were Cesario; Sir Toby and Sebastian come close to getting in a
duel of their own, when Olivia finds them, and charges them to stop.
Olivia dismisses Sir Toby, and asks Sebastian "would thou'dst be ruled by
me," thinking that he is Cesario, due to his great resemblance to his sister.
Sebastian decides to go along with it, struck by Olivia's beauty, thinking it
all a pleasant dream from which he hopes he will not awaken.

Maria and Feste conspire to present Feste as Sir Topaz, the curate, to
Malvolio, who is hidden from view. Feste tries to convince that Malvolio
that he is crazy, and Malvolio continues to insist that he is not, that he has
been wrongly incarcerated. Feste then confronts Malvolio as himself, and
torments him some more; he fakes a conversation with himself as Feste and
Sir Topaz, and Malvolio begs for paper and ink so that he can send a
message to Olivia. Feste promises to fetch these things, and exits with a
song.

Sebastian debates with himself whether he is mad, or whether it

is the Lady Olivia; but, he recognizes that is cannot be her, since
she is able to command a large household, and therefore would
have to be sane and coherent. Olivia asks him to come with her to
the parson and be married to her; Sebastian, though he does not
know her and cannot figure out exactly what is going on, says he
will marry her, and leaves with her.

Fabian asks Feste for the letter Malvolio has written; Feste refuses
this request, and then Orsino, with Viola, finds them. Feste delays
him with a bit of jesting, and gets some money out of him; Orsino
asks him to find Olivia, and Feste goes to find her, with the promise
of money for the task. Viola points out Antonio, who is being
brought to them by officers; Orsino remembers Antonio from a sea-
battle, and Viola tries to defend Antonio from charges of crime by
noting his kindness to her. Antonio claims that he rescued Viola
from drowning, and that they have been in each other's company
ever since; Orsino says that this is nonsense, since Viola has been
serving him the whole time.

Then, Olivia approaches them, still denying Orsino's love, while

admitting her affection for Viola. Orsino becomes angry at Viola,
rather than Olivia, because of these developments; he begins to
suspect Viola of double-dealings, and out of his anger, he admits
his love for Viola, still disguised as a boy. Viola, for the first time,
declares her love for Orsino, much to Olivia's consternation; Olivia
counters this declaration by divulging that she was married, to Viola
as Cesario, she thinks. A priest confirms Olivia's account, and Orsino
becomes even more angry at Viola. Sir Andrew and Sir Toby enter,

charging Viola with fighting them and injuring them; Viola is again
shocked, and confused.

Suddenly, Sebastian dashes in, apologizing for injuring Sir Toby; he

expresses his happiness at seeing Antonio again, and acknowledges
Olivia as his wife. Viola and Sebastian see each other again, and
there is a joyful reunion. Sebastian reveals to Olivia that she married
him, rather than his sister in disguise; Orsino swears that he loves
Viola, and will marry her.

Then, the action turns to Malvolio's condition; his letter is read, and
his condition explained. Malvolio is upset at his mistreatment, and
Olivia attempts to smooth things over; Fabian explains his, Sir
Toby's, and Maria's part in Malvolio's torment. Then, Feste inflames
Malvolio's anger, and he leaves, in a huff.

Orsino pronounces that happiness will stay with all of them, and
that his marriage to Viola will soon be performed. Feste closes the
play with a song about "the wind and the rain," a reminder that
even great happiness is not safe from life's storms.

One level of identity confusion in Twelfth Night is gender identity.

Viola embodies this confusion when she assumes the identity of a
boy, Cesario. Of course, in Shakespeare's time, all female roles were
played by boys, so in this case a boy actor plays a woman character
(Viola) who dissembles herself as a boy (Cesario). In a patriarchal
culture, sexual difference is held to be an immutable law; traditional
gender role behavior was based on a natural biological fact rather
than social convention.

The indeterminacy of Viola/Cesario's sexual identity would show

that maleness and femaleness were just aspects of a role, qualities
that are learned, not immutable physical traits. When Cesario and
Sir Andrew face each other in a duel, it is revealed that both are
acting the role of being a man. The biological fact of Sir Andrew's
maleness is obsolete. Both characters are pretending.

Shakespeare, especially through Olivia, gets to the heart of the

relationship between self and love. When we fall in love, we almost
necessarily lose our self-composure, cease to be able to see our
actions with our own eyes. Yet even though Olivia fears that her
attraction to Viola will come to naught, she is willing to risk it,
because love, or at least intense attraction, allows her to leave her
"mind" behind and give herself up to fate.

In Twelfth Night, love is seen as similar to death, because both

prose a threat, or at the very least, a challenge to the singular self
that is afraid of change. To be able to love another requires that
one must accept change, to accept that one cannot entirely control
one's fate, or even one's will. The very language that one uses to
communicate with another may end up demanding more, or at least
differently, than what one intended.

The characters in the play that cling to a singular sense of self that
does not allow for change are often the ones for whom change
happens most violently. Malvolio the most notable example of this,
but Orsino, too, although he claims to be open to love, is, beneath
all his high rhetoric, deeply afraid of any mutual love relationship.
In some ways, it's much easier for him to pine for Olivia and send
middlemen to woo her, precisely because it flatters his ego to feel
he loves more than she loves him back

Act 1 of Twelfth Night opens with music playing and Orsino's first
line ("If music be the food of love, play on") directly connecting
music to love. Music serves as a symbol of love throughout the
play. Orsino describes it as a way to nourish love. When Viola
hatches her plan to become Orsino's page (Act 1, Scene 2), she is
aware one of her qualifications is "I can sing / And speak to him in
many sorts of music / That will allow me very worth his service."
When Viola (as Cesario) first meets Olivia (Act 1, Scene 5), she says
if she loved Olivia, she would "write loyal cantons of contemnèd
love"-in other words, love songs. In Act 2, Scene 4, Orsino and Viola
(as Cesario) have a love scene in which Viola confesses her love for
Orsino (even though he doesn't recognize it). As Orsino requests,
music is playing quietly throughout the scene. Orsino and Viola
listen to the Fool sing a song about a "sad true lover" (Act 2, Scene
4). They are true lovers, but Orsino doesn't realize it yet. When Viola
(as Cesario) returns to Olivia's house to speak again for Orsino, she
says if Cesario were instead to speak of another suit (i.e., his own),
"I had rather hear you to solicit that/ Than music from the spheres"
(Act 3, Scene 1)

the wearer's character or-in the case of Viola, Olivia, Malvolio, and
the Fool-as a disguise of real character. The play's plot turns on
Viola's successful impersonation of a male page, Cesario, when she
arrives at Orsino's court. Even though cross dressing is helpful to
her at first, it becomes a burden when she falls in love with Orsino
