COMMON SURGICAL POSITIONS FOR

OT
INTRODUCTION
Surgical posture or positioning in the perioperative context refers to
the manner of situating the patints`s body for the surgical procedure.the goal
of positioning is to maximize anatomic exposure for the surgical procedure.

DEFINITION
Surgical positioning is the practice of placing a patient in particular physical
position during surgery.

IMPORTANCE OF SURGICAL POSITION


It heIps to provide optimal visualization of and access to the surgical site
that causes the least physiological compromise of the patient,while also
protecting the skin and joints.

TYPES OF SURGICAL POSITIONS


i. Supine position(or)dorsal position
ii. Prone position
iii. Side lying position
iv. Fowlers position
v. Lithotomy position
vi. Trendlenburg`s position
vii. Reverse Trendlenburg position
SUPINE POSITION

THE Supine position means the patient is face up with their head
resting on a pad positioner or pillow and their neck in a neutral
position.

POSITION USES FOR SURGERY


A. Abdominal surgery
B. Peritoneal surgery
C. Pericardial surgery
D. Operation im upper extremities and lower extremities.
E. Laparotomy
F. Abdominal hysterectomy
G. Appendectomy

PURPOSE
 Comfort
 Physical examination of anterior thorax
 Sugery on anterior portion
 catheterization

PRONE POSITION
According to Nancy , proning is the process of turning a patient with
precise , safe motions form their abdomen (stomach) so the individual is lying
face down.

POSITION USED FOR SURGERY


 Posterior back surgery
 Cervical spine surgery
 Rectal surgery
 Brain surgery

PURPOSE
1) After anesthesia to prevent aspiration.
2) To relieve pressure on areas such sacrum,scapula and head.
3) Surgeries of back
4) Examination of posterior trunk,spines rectum.
SIDE LYING POSITION
A lateral recumbent position in which the individual rests on the right or
left side , usually with the knees slightly flexed.

POSITION USED FOR SURGERY


 Renal surgery
 Kidney surgery
 Chest surgery
 Hip surgery
 Shoulder surgery

PURPOSES
1) To prevent sinus pressure , increase in mucus and potential
nosebleed.
2) To maintains a connectionbetween therapist-client-baby.
3) To prevent rib cage release.

FOWLER`S POSITION
Fowler`s position is a standard patient position is which the patient
is seated in semi-sitting position (45-60 degrees) and may have knees either
bend or straight.

POSITION USES FOR SURGERY


 Breast surgery
 Shoulder surgery
 ENT surgery
 Nasal surgery
 Abdominal reconstruction surgery.

LITHOTOMY POSITION
A position of body for medical examination, pelvic or abdominal
surgery,or childbirth in which individual lies on the back with the hips and
knees flexed and the legs spread and raised above .

 Gynacology surgery
 Hemorrheidectomy
 Rectal surgery
 Neurology surgery

PURPOSES
 Position during delivery for women
 Surgical procedures of genitourinary system

TRENDLENBURG POSITION
A position of the body for operation or medical examination in which
patient bed placed down on table inclined at about 45 degrees from the floor
with knees uppermost and legs hnging over end of the table
POSITION USED FOR SURGERY
 Appendectomy
 Laparotomy
 Pericardial surgery
 Abdominal surgery

PURPOSE
Due to angle,

Allows foe patient`s abdominal surgery the organ to move towards the
head by use of gravity.

It improve surgial access to pelvic organs

It helps to reverse hypotension

REVERSE TRENDLENBURG POSITION


The reverse trendlenburg position is a position in which patient`s hip and
knee are not flexed but headn and chest are elevated at 30 degrees than the
abdomenand legs

POSITION USED FOR SURGERY


 Neck surgery
 Haed surgery
 Gynecologiocal surgery
 Laproscopic surgeries

PURPOSE
To treat low cardiac output

To postural drainage

To reduce leg swelling

CONCLUSION
AS per my presentation on positions gained knowledge about positions
and its uses and learned about how position is important for the
therapeutic treatment.
