1 Gather the equipment

2 Explain the procedure to the patient
3 One provider establishes in-line manual stabilization of the
patient’s head and neck
4 Another provider kneels at the thorax and grasps the patient’s
opposite shoulder and wrist and pelvis area.
5 A third provider kneels at the patient’s knees and grasps the
patient’s wrist and pelvis and lower extremities
6 The long backboard is placed on the lateral edge and brought into
position between the patient and the providers
7 The board is placed with the foot of the board between the patient’s
knees and ankles, and the patient is log rolled onto his or her side.
8 The patient’s head rotates less than the torso, so by the time the
patient is on his or her side (perpendicular to the ground), the head
and torso have come into proper alignment
9 Once the patient is supine position on the long backboard, the
patient is moved upward and toward the center of the board.
10 The pre-hospital care providers should take care not to pull the
patient but to maintain neutral in-line stabilization
11 Once the patient is positioned properly on the long backboard, a
properly sized cervical collar can be applied, and the patient can be
secured to the blackboard
12 Document the procedure
