GRAMMAR

Equality:
exemplo abaixo:

AS + ADJ + AS

Exemplos:
Jane is as beautiful as Rose. (Jane é tão bonita quanto Rose)
The dog is as big as the lion. (O cachorro é tão grande quanto o leão)
Josh is as funny as Kevin. (Josh é tão engraçado quanto Kevin)

Comparisons:
adjectives) e adjetivos longos (long adjectives).

⮚ Short Adjectives
palavra.
Ex.:
Peter is older than John.
This is easier than I expected.
⮚ Long Adjectives
seguimos as seguintes regras: more + adjective + than
Ex.:
My sister is more intelligent than that boy.

My mother is more beautiful than my aunt.

4
INTER ENGLISH - BOOK 2

The cake is more delicious than the ice cream.

Abaixo
alguns adjetivos irregulares de comparação em inglês.

Bad - Worse

Far – Farther

Good – Better

Ex.:
My clothes are better than yours.
(Minhas roupas são melhores que as suas)

Tom ran farther than Bill.

Pay attention
Short adjectives – No máximo duas silabas
Long adjectives – Três silabas ou mais

O WILL (‘LL, forma contraída) é usado quando você decide fazer algo no
futuro.
⮚ AFFIRMATIVE

UNIT 5
I don’t know what to do

My vacations are next week, and I was planning a nice

journey to a different place. I have two countries in my
mind, the first one is China, and the second one is South
Africa, I must choose only one to visit, and I don’t have
any idea which one I prefer.
I have compared those two countries, but I still don’t
know where I should go. I prefer traveling to a place
where I can stay on the beach and have contact with
animals, I can find those things in South Africa, but I also
would rather know old places, and different cultures and
I can find this stuff in China.
Last year I spent my vacations in Puerto Rico where I
enjoyed beaches and wildlife, this year I prefer
something exotic, so I decided, right now, that I am going
to spend my vacations in China.

IMPORTANT POINT 1

25
INTER ENGLISH - BOOK 2

Ex.:

She prefers not working today.

⮚ WOULD RATHER

momento.
O verbo “Would rather” é usado da seguinte maneira:

INTERROGATIVE

Prefer
auxiliar do ou does antes do pronome pessoal.
Ex.:
What do you prefer?
What does she prefer?

• Would rather
would antes do pronome pessoal.

The Weather

Lee is talking about the Arctic and global warming with his two friends, Jana and
Akinyi.
Akinyi: The weather is getting so cold. I hate it!
Jana: I do too. I miss fall already. September was really lovely here. I wish we
could have that weather all year.
Lee: Don’t say that. I don’t want the Earth to get any warmer. One of my classes
yesterday got me freaked out about global warming.
Jana: More freaked out than usual?
Akinyi: I think we’re all concerned about global warming. What was the different
about yesterday’s class?
Lee: We talked about the melting permafrost in the Arctic.
Akinyi: The Earth has to get a lot warmer for the permafrost to melt, right?
Lee: No, and the scariest part is the feedback loop.
Jana: The feedback loop? What’s that?
Lee: Well, there’s carbon frozen in the permafrost, right? And when the
permafrost melts, microbes release carbon dioxide and methane. This leads to
more climate change.
Akinyi: What’s the loop part?
Lee: We all know that carbon dioxide and methane cause global temperatures to
rise.
Jana: And if the temperature rises, then more permafrost melts.
Lee: Exactly. And when more permafrost melts, more carbon dioxide and
methane are released. That causes global temperatures to rise even more. And
the cycle continues.
Akinyi: That is one scary cycle. What could we do to stop it?
Lee: Reduce our carbon dioxide emissions. For most people, this means using
less energy, using cleaner energy like solar and wind, and driving less.

UNIT 7
A visit to the doctor’s office

I didn’t feel well this morning, so I called to my

doctor’s office. I was lucky to get an
appointment this afternoon at 4:40. It is the
beginning of the year, so when I arrived at the
office, I had to fill out new insurance paperwork
and health history to update my information.
When I turned in the paperwork the receptionist
asked for my $20.00 co-pay.

My co-pay is the part of the bill I have to pay it.

Insurance pays the rest.
It was late in the day, and the office was behind
schedule, so I had to wait 45 minutes. Finally,
the nurse called my name and took me back to
an examination room. On the way, she weighed me and measured my height.
I hate being weighed with my shoes on because it adds at least 3 extra pounds.
When we got to the examination room, she took my vital signs, including my
temperature and blood pressure. She asked me what was wrong with me today,
and then I waited until the doctor came in.
After looking me over and asking a few questions, the doctor’s diagnosis was that
I had a sinus infection. He wrote me out a prescription for antibiotics and had his
nurse e-mail it to the drug store. I picked up my medicine on the way home, and
already I am feeling better.

Cinnamon Lowers Blood Sugar Levels and Has a Powerful

Antidiabetic Effect

Cinnamon is a popular spice, found it in all sorts of recipes and baked goods.
It contains a compound called cinnamaldehyde, which is responsible for
cinnamon's medicinal properties.
Cinnamon has potent antioxidant
activity, helps fight inflammation, and
has been shown to lower cholesterol
and triglycerides in the blood.
But where cinnamon shines is in its
effects on blood sugar levels.
Cinnamon can lower blood sugar by
several mechanisms, including by
slowing the breakdown of carbs in the digestive tract and improving insulin
sensitivity.
Studies have shown that cinnamon can lower fasting blood sugars by 10-29% in
diabetic patients, which is a significant amount.
The effective dose is typically 0.5-2 teaspoons of cinnamon per day, or 1-6 grams.

OBJECT PRONOUNS

We use object pronouns after verbs and after prepositions.

Joe is looking for a job

Interviewer (Ms. Hanford): Good morning… Job Applicant (Mr. Anderson):

Good morning, Joe Anderson, it's a pleasure to meet you Ms. Hanford.
Hanford: How do you do? Please take a seat. (Joe sits) It's quite rainy outside,
isn't it?
Anderson: Yes, luckily, you have a nice
underground parking lot that helped me
avoid the worst of it. I must say this is an
impressive building.
Hanford: Thank you, we like working
here... Now, let's see. You've come to
interview for the position of e-commerce
manager, haven't you?
Anderson: Yes, Peter Smith
encouraged me to apply, and I think I'd
be ideal for the position.
Hanford: Oh. Peter… he's a great
sysadmin, we like him a lot … Let's go
over your resume. Could you begin by
telling me about your qualifications?
Anderson: Certainly. I've been working as the regional assistant director of
marketing at Simpco Northwest for the last year.
Hanford: And what did you do before that?
Anderson: Before that, I was a Simpco local branch manager in Tacoma.
Hanford: Well, I see you have done well at Simpco. Can you give me some more
detail about your responsibilities as an assistant director?
Anderson: Yes, I've been in charge
of in-house personnel training for our Internet customer service reps over the past
six months.
Hanford: Can you tell me a little bit about what you've been doing in your training
?
Anderson: We've been working on improving customer satisfaction
through an innovative e-commerce solution that provides real-time chat service
help to visitors to the site.
Hanford: Interesting. Is there anything in particular you feel would be useful here
at Sanders Co.?

75
INTER ENGLISH - BOOK 2

Anderson: I understand that you have been expanding your e-commerce to

include social networking features.
Hanford: Yes, that's correct.
Anderson: I think that my experience in customer relations on the Internet in real
time puts me in the unique position of understanding what works and what
doesn't.
Hanford: Ok. What difficulties and challenges do you think we might run into?
Anderson: Well, I think we'll continue to see consumers spend more of the
shopping dollars online. I've been studying how sales directly relate to customer
satisfaction with online services.
Hanford: Would you mind giving me a bit more detail of that?
Anderson: Sure ... if customers aren't satisfied with the service, they receive
online, they won't come back. It's much easier to lose customers online. That's
why you need to make sure that you get it right the first time around.
Hanford: I can see you've learned quite a lot in the short time you've been
working in e-commerce.
Anderson: Yes, it's an exciting field to be working in …

READING...

How can you show you have this skill?

If you have a job interview and you want to demonstrate your achievements, you
need to think about the different situations you have been in, the actions you have
taken, and the results of these actions. Perhaps you have had a difficult customer,
how have you dealt with that person? Did your action benefit your organization?
In what way? If your results were successful, state this either in your job
application or in your interview.
Think about the skills you have, which makes you attractive and valuable as an
employee. Remember, the more achievement you can give as examples, the
more you can sell and market yourself for the job.
