Endangered Species Fact File

Use the internet to research the species given on each sheet. You should be able to describe why
the species is endangered and suggest what would happen if it became extinct. The first sheet has
been completed for you as an example.

Species: Status:
Polar Bear Vulnerable
Scientific Name: Habitat:
Ursus maritimus Arctic Sea Ice
What does it look like?

Where does it live?

Describe the factors that have led to the species becoming threatened.
Global warming has led to the melting of sea ice, resulting in loss of habitat. Loss of sea ice also
affects seals, which are the main source of food for polar bears. Polar bears are also affected by
human activities, such as industrial development and illegal hunting.

What would happen if this species became extinct?

Polar bears are apex predators which means they are at the top of their food web. If polar bears
went extinct, it would affect organisms further down the food chain. For example, polar bears
feed on seals so a loss of polar bears would cause an increase in the number of seals. This
would mean more fish are eaten by seals, which would reduce the number of fish available for
other organisms in the food web.
