INTRODUCTION
SELF INDUCTANCE: It is a phenomenon where growth and
decay of current is opposed due to change in magnetic flux
between different layers of a coil, there is a self-induced emf
developed which opposes the source emf.
The coefficient of self-inductance of a coil is independent of
current, but depends on the number of turns as well as the
length of the solenoid.
The self-induction is self-induced emf developed due to rate of
change of current.
Self-inductance is used in minimizing the power loss over long
distances in AC current and it is also used in choke coil.

AIM
To determine the value of coefficient of self-inductance of a
coil.

MATERIALS REQUIRED
• A coil with a large number of turns
• AC source
• DC source
• Ammeter of suitable range
• Rheostat
• One-way key
• Connecting wires
• Electrical Bulb
• Voltmeter, etc.

THEORY
The coefficient of self-inductance of a coil depends on the
impendence, resistance, frequency of electric current.

Self-inductance ∝ √𝐼𝑚𝑝𝑒𝑑𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒
Self-inductance ∝ √𝑅𝑒𝑠𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒

PROCEDURE
1. Make all the connections as shown in the circuit diagram.
2. Switch on the power supply and adjust for constant
potential difference using the rheostat.
3. Now insert the soft iron rod into the copper coil and note
down the reading in the ammeter.
4. Now increase the reading in the voltmeter using the
rheostat by multiples and follow the same procedure.
5. Calculate Z for AC current and R for DC current.
6. Using the formula of L, the coefficient of Self Inductance.

APPLICATIONS
In every circuit, where the inductor is used, self-inductance is
used:
Its applications include:
• Self-inductance of a coil is used in electrical oscillator
circuit.
• The phenomenon of self-inductance is used DC to AC
converter.
• It is also used in AC filter.
• A transformer uses self-inductance. the self-inductance
limits the current through the transformer’s primary
windings, etc.
