SOLUTIONS OF PROBLEMS INVOLVING POLYNOMIAL

FUNCTIONS

Learning Competency
The learner solves problems involving polynomial functions. (M10AL-llb-2)

Objective
The learner solves problems involving polynomial functions.

Let’s Recall
Find the product of the following polynomials.
1. 𝑥(𝑥 + 5) 4. (𝑦 − 6)(𝑦 + 6)
2. (2𝑥 + 1)(𝑥 + 5) 5. (2𝑦 − 1)(2𝑦 + 1)
3. (𝑥 + 1)(𝑥 + 2)(𝑥 + 3)

Let’s Understand
REMEMBER:
There are different problems for which a polynomial is used to find the solutions.
You have seen many of these on the previous chapter. Some of these are real –life
problems that can be modeled with polynomial functions.
Example 1: A car manufacturer determines that its profit, 𝑃 in thousands of
pesos, can be modeled by the function 𝑃(𝑥) = 0.0081𝑥 4 + 𝑥 − 4,
where 𝑥 represents the number of cars sold. What is the profit when
𝑥 = 200?
Solution:
𝑃(200) = 0.0081(200)4 + 200 − 4
𝑃(200) = 0.0081(1,600,000,000) + 196
𝑃(200) = 12,960,000 + 196
𝑃(200) = 12,960,196
Answer: ₱12,960,196 is the profit
Example 2: Television screens are usually measured by the length of its
diagonal. The television set has a 60-inch diagonal. The screen is 12
inches wider than its height. Find the dimensions of the screen.
Solution: Use the Pythagorean theorem
Square of height + Square of width = Square of diagonal
Let: height = 𝑥
width = 𝑥 + 12
diagonal = 60

MATHEMATICS10-QUARTER2-WEEK2

Equation: 𝑥 2 + (𝑥 + 12)2 = 602

𝑥 2 + 𝑥 2 + 24𝑥 + 144 = 3600
2𝑥 2 + 24𝑥 + 144 − 3600 = 0
2𝑥 2 + 24𝑥 − 3456 = 0
𝑥 2 + 12𝑥 − 1728 = 0
(𝑥 + 48)(𝑥 − 36) = 0
𝑥 = −48 𝑜𝑟 𝑥 = 36
Answer: By choosing the positive solution, the height of the
picture is 36 inches, and the width of the picture is 48
inches.
