Mini Lab Activity 19.1 - Examining Sex Cells
INTRODUCTION:
Sperm and egg cells are specialized for reproduction. The egg cell is produced with a large amount of cytoplasm
and a special protective membrane. Sperm are specialized for their journey to join the egg. Once a sperm fertilizes
the egg in the oviduct, the zygote begins to divide by repeated mitotic divisions to produce a blastocyst for
implantation
PROCEDURE
Carefully examine the prepared digital slides of a human sperm, human egg, and a sea star blastula. Compare the human
sperm to Figure A, the egg to Figure B, and the blastula to Figure C. See the images on the 2 nd page.
OBSERVATION
List down all the parts of sperm cell, egg cell and blastula. Identify the roles of each part.
Sperm Cell Egg Cell Blastula
ANALYSIS
1. Which structures labeled in Figure A are visible on the sperm cell slide? What is the function of each
structure?
2. Which structures labeled in Figure B are visible on the egg cell slide? What is the function of each
structure?
3. What is the function of the cells of the follicle surrounding the egg?
Figure B.
