Weather Optimist continued from front
I remember one year hunting on Thanksgiving day
to be exact, it was snowing, sleeting and blowing so hard
the truck was rockin’. Really! Absolutely brutal! But you
know, on that day, I shot a really nice buck. It was blowing
so hard, I don’t think he heard me. And if I had needed
it, we could have tracked a blood trail in the snow. Easy.
Just enough snow to see but not enough to hamper
walking. And there it is: Weather Optimism.
The year we built our house foundation out there it
rained so hard and so often we had to go out and sweep
the foundation during the rainstorms. We were living in
the garage then and it was cold, too. So, we took some
time off and played movies purchased from the then
Pamida and cuddled on the couch. I think the ranchers
had the best crop in a very long time that year. And we
had a beautiful lawn and planted a nice hedgerow that
didn’t have to be watered. Weather Optimism.
And then there’s been the years with drought
conditions. Years when even though I had to run home
at lunch time because the garden needed watering twice
a day or it would burn up and even then, it didn’t produce
a thing. It could have been worse. Coulda been hotter or
dryer. On some days, I wondered if it really could, but
still: Weather Optimism.
To be sure, Montana weather can be hard to take.
Our first winter here was the year of the big snow. The
toll on the wildlife was almost unbearable. I quit taking
rides in the country because we would invariably run
across some starving antelope or other critter. And then
there was the year of the big drought. When I came to
visit that year, I couldn’t help but wonder how many
calves I could get in my SUV and how big of a trailer it
could haul if we had to evacuate due to wild fire. That’s
tough weather conditions. You have to think it’s gonna
get better or you’ll go crazy. Weather Optimism.
So maybe it’s just a smidge of Optimism in general, or
maybe it’s more like we can’t change the weather anyway.
Maybe it’s both. I think we love Montana, Weather and
all. Weather Optimist.

According to National Day Calendar: “The
word “corn” in Old English meant “grain” or, more
specifically, the most prominent grain grown in a
region. When Native Americans introduce their most
common grain, maize, to early Europeans, they aptly
applied the word “corn.”
“As early as the 16th century, the Aztecs used
popcorn in headdresses worn during ceremonies
honoring Tlaloc, their god of maize and fertility.
Early Spanish explorers were fascinated by the corn
that burst into what looked like a white flower.
“Popcorn started becoming popular in the
United States in the middle 1800s. It wasn’t until
Charles Cretors, a candy-store owner, developed a
machine for popping corn with steam that the tasty
treat became more abundantly poppable. By 1900 he
had horse-drawn popcorn wagons going through the
streets of Chicago.
“At about the same time, Louise Ruckheim added
peanuts and molasses to popcorn to bring Cracker
Jack to the world. Then in 1908, the national anthem
of baseball was born. Jack Norworth and Albert Von
Tilzer wrote Take Me out to the Ballgame. From that
point onward, popcorn, specifically Cracker Jack,
became forever married to the game.”
Scobey wins round one

While most of Montana high schools postponed or
canceled games over the weekend, the Lustre Christian
Lions made the trek to Scobey Saturday afternoon for
a big District 3C contest. It happened to be the only
Eastern C Division game.
Nashua postponed its games with Scobey and
North Country. Lustre Christian did postponed its
game with North County as did Circle with Dodson.
Others to postpone games were Bainville-Brockton,
Savage-Froid-Lake and Richey-Lambert-Plentywood.
The top two ranked Class C teams in boys
basketball, both sporting 9-0, 4-0 records, battled at
Scobey High School with below zero temperatures on
the northern border of Montana.
Scobey (10-0, 5-0) won the first round against top-
ranked Lustre Christian, 53-43. You can bet that these
two teams will battle it out in Lustre on Feb. 10 and
should face each other at the district tournament.
The Lions big guys, 6-foot-5 Johnslee Pierre,
6-foot-5 Byron Ewing, and 6-foot Terran Joseph scored
only 22 points between the three. Pierre is usually good
for 20-plus points and Joseph for 15 or more. Ewing, at
times, scores in double figures.
That enabled the Spartans to take advantage of the
lack of points by those three. However, the Spartans had
a rough start, trailing 11-5 late in the first quarter. Clay
Reddig (5 points), Cayden Klatt and Joseph drained a
three-pointer each to give the Lions the lead.
Ewing’s bucket early in the second frame had the
Lions up 14-5. But the Spartans rallied to take their
first lead of the game, 20-18, on Braxton Wolfe’ three-
pointer at the 2:59 mark. The teams went into the locker
room tied at 22.
Scobey opened the third with a 9-2 run. Ewing
scored to get the Lions to within 36-34. Cooper
Axtman had given the Spartans a 36-32 lead with his
three. Scobey led 38-34 after three periods.
Bram Handran had a good defensive game,
blocking Ewing twice on two straight attempts at the
bucket late in the third. Handran gave Scobey a 40-34
lead early in the fourth.
Reddig missed two free throws, then Kollen
Machart made it 42-34. He followed that with another
bucket at the 4:59 mark. The Spartans led by 14 at the
four minute mark.
Klatt drilled his second three-ball ro get the
deficit down to 52-42 with 2:19 to play. The Lions had
a turnover and missed a three-pointer attempt before
Reddig scored, cutting the lead to 52-43. The Lions
missed three long range shots in the final 20 seconds of
the game.
Handran had a good offensive night as well, scoring
a game-high 18 points. John Carney followed with 11,
Machart had nine, Wolfde six, Axtman five, and Brecken
Maher four.
Reddig and Pierre had nine points each for the
Lions. Joseph added seven points, Klatt and Ewing six
each, Cam Reddig four, and Prestyn Klatt two.
Scobey was 4 for 5 from the line and the Lions 3 for
6.
Scobey made it a sweep with the girls also winning,
42-34, in a turnover marred contest.
Lustre Christian (8-2, 3-2) ran out to a 10-4 first
quarter lead behind six points of senior Alexa Reddig.
Scobey fought back to take a 13-11 lead on Avery Wolfe’s
three-ball at the 3:05 mark in the second period. That was
the Spartans first lead of the game.
Kaytie Aanstad gave the Spartans their biggest lead
of the half, 17-13, with 54 seconds left.
The 6-foot Aanstad also scored the first bucket of
the second half for a 19-13 advantage at the 7:36 mark of
the third period. Eighth-grader Kensia Brown, who plays
like a veteran, scored to get the deficit down to 19-17.
Scobey (8-2, 3-2) got another three from Wolfe for
a 29-18 lead at the 3:21 mark. The Spartans were on an
8-0 run and made it 10-0 when Mya Green scored. Kayla
Carney rebounded her two missed free throws to score
on a putback for a 33-20 going into the fourth quarter.
The Lions had some luck when Aanstad picked up
her fifth foul at the 4:14 mark of the fourth. But the Lions
lost Reddig to fouls after that.
Scobey led by 14, 41-27, on Wolfe’s three with 2:07
to play. Brown scored the final five points of the game,
cutting the deficit to eight.
Aanstad led the Spartans with 12 points, Wolfe had
nine, Kennadi Cromwell six, Carney, Camrie Holum,
and Chloe Handran four apiece, Green two, and Mai
Handran one.
Reddig had a game-high 14 points in leading the
Lions. Brown followed with 13 points, Aubri Holsricther
had five, and Grace Brown two.
Games on tap this week Nashua hosts Frazer
tonight. Friday North Country travels to Frazer and
Lustre Christian hosts Nashua, Saturday has North
Country hosting Dodson at Whitewater.

Scotties drop another game

Two more heart-breaking losses for Glasgow boys
basketball last weekend. The Scotties dropped their
second straight District 2B games that should have
been wins.
Friday the Scotties had a 15 point lead on Poplar
in the fourth quarter. However, the Scotties let it slip
away in the fourth quarter. A week prior to this loss, the
Scotties let Malta pull away for a win. Both conference
games should have been wins for the Scotties. In the
last three games the Scottieds have been outscored 73-
33 in the fourth quarter. Glasgow trailed Malta 43-42
and Glendive 42-39 after three quarters and led Pop;ar
57-42.
“Looking back at it, we took really good shots with
(Cade) Hudyma down low, we just couldn’t convert,”
said Glasgow coach Paul Yoakam.
But in all fairness to the young Scotties, Poplar
is an experienced team and knows how to come back
and get the wins.
“Poplar got hot,” Yoakam said. “It’s just one of
those things with a young team where you learn. I
thought we played our three best quarters of basketball
this year. We just got to finish off the game.”
The Scotties trailed 16-13 after the first quarter,
but took charge in the second to go on a 14-0 run.
DelRay Lily and Mykles Yoakam traded three-
pointers, each bagging two. Yoakam led the charge
with 17 points as the Scotties held a 40-25 lead at the
break. Yoakam drained four 3-pointers in the half.
Poplar (5-3) closed the gap to 42-33 in the fourth
on Lily’s three. Hudyma led the Scotties in the third
with 11 points as Glasgow held a 57-42 lead. Wyatt
Babb scored the final bucket in the frame.
T he Indians showed their experience in that fourth
quarter.
Hudyma scored to start the fourth period, giving
the Scotties a 17 point lead. After that it was all Poplar
as Wiliam Youngman started a 7-0 run to close to
within 59-49.
Babb scored, but Geordy Medicine Cloud
converted a three-point play and buried two three-
pointers to cut the deficit to 61-59. Walker Burshia tied
the score at 61 and Kameron Reum gave the Indians a
63-61 lead with 18 seconds to play. Kanniel Ricker iced
the win with two free throws.
“They know that they are always in it,” said
Yoakam.
Medicine Cloud scored 18 points in the second
half, while Lily had 16 in the first half.
“Those two are always going to score, there’s not
much you can do about that,” said Yoakam. “Toryn
(Richards) did a great job on Kanniel. He only had two
points and Geordy had a good night.”
Lily led the Indians with a game-high 27 points,
including four 3-pointers. Medicine Cloud followed
with 24 points, including five treys, Youngman had
five, Burshia four, Ricker three, and Reum two.
Hudyma paced the Scotties with 22 points,
Yoakam was held scoreless in the second half, finishing
with 17 points. Babb tallied 15 points, Richards had
four points and Connor Hudyma three.
Most of Northern B postponed or canceled
games due to the below zero weather. Fairview/Poplar.
Fergus/Malta, Shelby/Cut Bank and Conrad/Chinook
were called off.
The week prior to that, Box Elder thumper
Harlem 82-41, Fairview beat Harlem 73-45 and Malta
whipped Wolf Point 79-39.
The Scotties host Fairview Thursday and Harlem
Friday in two conference contests.
“Fairview matches up well with us. They’re
about the same as we are,” said Yoakam. “They have
a big guy underneath and a strong point guard. This
is going to be an interesting matchup. Harlem is a
young team. They have guards, but not a big team.
They’re guards can shoot and get hot. We have to be
ready to play them.”
