Name: Naeem Mohammed

1) What are subatomic particles?

A subatomic particle is a unit of matter or energy that's the fundamental makeup
of all matter. According to modern atomic theory, an atom has a nucleus, which
is its centre, or core.

2) What are the main subatomic particles and who discovered them?
Electron- J.J. Thomson
Proton- Ernest Rutherford
Neutron-James Chadwick

3) Other subatomic particles:

 Photon
 Antiproton
 Positron/ Antielectron
 Muon

4) Number of subatomic particles in an atom?

No. of protons + no. of neutrons= mass number
No. of protons= no. of electrons

5) Relative layout of an atom

6) Subatomic particles in the nucleus
The nucleus is located at the centre of the atom and contains protons and
neutrons. The nucleus is composed of three small particles that are referred to as
quarks.

7) Subatomic particles outside the nucleus

Electrons are found outside the nucleus and are negatively charged. They orbit
around the nucleus in shells.

8) Characteristics of subatomic particles

Subatomic Relative mass Relative charge Location
particles
Proton 1 +1 In the nucleus
Neutron 1 0 In the nucleus
Electron 1/1840 -1 Orbiting around
the nucleus in
shells
