The story is about the resistance of jeepney drivers and operators in

the Philippines to the government's plan to phase out old jeepneys and
replace them with newer, more eco-friendly models. The drivers and
operators, led by the group Piston, argue that the modernization
program is "anti-poor" and profit-oriented, and that the new models
are too expensive for them to afford. They are calling on the
government to scrap the current plan and create a new one that
focuses on modernizing transport. The story notes that jeepneys are a
beloved form of public transport in the Philippines, and are used by
millions of people every day. However, they are also notorious
polluters, and the government argues that the modernization plan is
necessary to reduce emissions and improve the country's chaotic public
transport system. The story denotes the modernization plan has been
met with protests and strikes by jeepney drivers and operators, who
argue that it will only burden them with debt but also threaten their
livelihoods. For me I would not agree to this kind of situation
considering jeepney is a cultural icon that represents Filipino values,
socialization, and culture. It is a reminder of who we are as a people
with open arms and is ready to lend a hand, and having a distinct
sensibility that brings Filipino-ness to life.
