Lesson Plan: Introduction to Parliamentary Debate Second Years

Objective:
• Plan an argument using Answer-Reason-Example.
• Listen carefully to other people’s opinions.
• Counter an argument with a different opinion.
• Have a group debate.

Class Structure:
1. Warm-up: Ping-pong debate (5 minutes)
 Review the concept of supporting and opposing claims through quick debates in
pairs.
 Conduct the jyanken to determine affirmative and negative sides.
 Allow pairs time to engage in ping-pong debates based on the provided claims.

2. Group Formation and Roles (5 minutes)


 Briefly explain the format of Parliamentary Debate and the roles of each
participant.
 Divide students into groups of 5.
 Have each group decide on the roles (PM, LO, MG, MO, PMO/LOR) for their team.

3. Brainstorming Activity (5 minutes)


 Guide students through Steps 1 to 3, allowing them to brainstorm and organise
their arguments for a given motion.

4. Debate Preparation (5 minutes)


 Provide time for each team to discuss and refine their arguments.
 Encourage collaboration and the use of evidence to support their claims.

5. Debate Rounds (25 minutes)


 Start the debates, following the structure of PM, LO, MG, MO, PMO/LOR for
each team.
 Use a timer to ensure that each speaker stays within the allotted time.
 Give each group time to discuss after the first arguments to form the refutations
and before the final conclusions.

6. Reflection and Feedback (5 minutes)


 Allow each team to reflect on their performance.
 Encourage feedback from peers and provide constructive comments.
 Discuss key points, successful arguments, and areas for improvement.
