37 A pH meter is a scientific instrument that measures the hydrogen-ion activity in water- 4
based solution water-based solutions, indicating its acidity or alkalinity. expressed as
pH. The pH meter measures the difference in electrical potential between a pH electrode
and a reference electrode, and so the pH meter is sometimes referred to as a
"potentiometric pH meter". The difference in electrical potential relates to the acidity or
pH of the solution. The pH meter is used in many applications ranging from laboratory
experimentation to quality control. Plants need a specific pH range for proper growth.
The soil may be acidic, basic or neutral depending upon the relative concentration of H*
and OH-. The pH of any soil can be determined by using pH paper. If the soil is too
acidic, it can be corrected by adding lime to it. If the soil is too basic, it can be corrected
by adding organic manure which contains acidic materials.

1.Which of the following statement is not correct regarding pH Scale?

(a) It is the negative logarithm of H+ ion concentration of a given solution.
(b) It is the positive logarithm of H+ ion concentration of a given solution.

Why we measure the pH of sea water? Name the other fields where pH scale is
important for measurements?

38 In humans, sex determination is the process that determines the biological sex of an 4
offspring and, as a result, the sexual characteristics that they will develop. A child's
biological sex (male or female) is determined by the chromosome that the male parent
contributes. Males have XY sex chromosomes while females have XX sex
chromosomes; the male can contribute the X or Y chromosome, while the female must
contribute one of their X chromosomes. Parents terminate the pregnancy after knowing
the sex of their unborn child, usually a daughter. This is illegal and unethical to carry
out prenatal sex determination for aborting female foetus

iii- If humans have two sex chromosomes, how many autosomes do they have-
a- 46 b- 44 c- 92 d- No autosomes are present in humans
iv- Who is mainly responsible for the sex of the male child-
a- Father b- mother c- both parents d- none of these

OR

There are 4 main blood groups (types of blood) – A, B, AB and O. Your blood group is
determined by the genes you inherit from your parents. In addition to the A and B
antigens, there is a protein called the Rh factor, which can be either present (+) or
absent (–), creating the 8 most common blood types (A+, A-, B+, B-, O+, O-, AB+,
AB-).

sufficient
