system to protect glass process plant. The protective coating provides
additional protection against risk of injury, release of corrosive liquids
or loss of expensive material in the event of accidental breakage. The
entire range of glass components listed in the catalogue can be
supplied with SUPERCOAT.
It is important to note that the application of SUPERCOAT does not
increase the maximum working pressure.
The coating is applied in a transparent / translucent form to the glass
components. The SUPERCOAT protects the surface of the glass during
storage, transport, installation and operation.
SUPERCOAT will protect the glass from impact damage up to a process

Static Electricity
Electrostatic Charge Generation
Electrostatic charge generation in glass vessels and piping systems
occurs due to:-
• The agitation of a low conductivity fluid in a vessel, or The flow of a
low conductivity liquid through a piping system.
• The charge generated is retained in the fluid and due to the low
conductivity cannot be dissipated (even if the fluid is in contact with
a high conductivity pure metal vessel/pipe wall).
Charge generation will occur whether the vessel/ pipework is glass or
of metal construction.
The charge generated depends on the actual operating conditions. For
more information contact our technical department.

Introduction STRAIGHT THROUGH VALVES (LINE VALVES)

Valves and filters form an essential part of any process plant or

system in a wide range of applications from relatively simple
on/off function to control, pressure relief and filtering. DN1

All wetted parts of valves and filters described in this section of the
catalogue are constructed from Boroslilicate glass and PTFE, thus DN

ensuring maximum resistance to corrosion. In addition, as valves

have a glass body, visual monitoring of the valve operation is
possible at all times. Complete valve consists of Glass Valve Body, L

Three Way Flow Change Valves
With normal three way valves it is possible to close both outlets at
the same time by mistake which can result in the build-up of excess
pressure in the line and also in the plant itself. The valve described
here provided a safe solution to this problem since the design DN1
ensures that free flow through the valve is never impeded.
The use of a three way flow change valve is recommended when a
plant is operated batch wise, under vacuum and needs to be

vented at regular intervals in such circumstances one outlet is L
connected to the vacuum pump and the other (in reverse direction
of flow) is used for venting purpose. L2

uniform distribution in the liquid even when used with large

The liquid and gas through put ratio can be selected within wide

diameter for the gas inlet holes or changing the liquid flow rate. It is
also possible to vary the ratio of the two flow rates to each other by DN

Column Sections
For building glass columns from DN 80 to DN 300,it is possible to use
type SGCS or SGCST column sections with integral packing support L
shelf or types PS pipe sections (see Chapter 2 - Pipeline Components) in
combination with support plates. SGCST denotes column section with DN
L
nozzle for thermometer pocket.
All column sections are supplied complete without packing support.
The packing support must be ordered separately.
Column sections and pipe sections may be used for the construction of
columns of all nominal bores provided that the weight of the packing
and retained liquid does not exceed the load-bearing capacity of the
support. The design of the support requires the use of a minimum size
of the packing.

Supporting Structures
Introduction
Glass process plant pipeline and equipment are normally supported in W
a tubular steel structure consisting of 'B' Class galvanized iron tubing W
together with the appropriate cast iron fittings, support frames and
various other structural supports detailed in this chapter of the
catalogue. L
The structural support system is also flexible enough to permit easy L
modification to suit changing needs, a factor greatly enhanced by the
introduction of open sided fittings in this catalogue.
The items, detailed in this chapter of the catalogue together with the
dimensional and technical information and recommended assembly
procedures will prove invaluable in the structural supports of glass

Gas Absorber - Adiabatic Type COLUMN
ADAPTOR COOLENT IN

Hydrogen Chloride is very soluble in water but it's absorption is COOLENT OUT

complicated by the high heat of solution and the high partial pressure
over warm concentrated solutions. In practice, the basic problem in HEAT EXCHANGER

making concentrated solutions is one of efficient heat removal. In this

type of absorber, the heat of absorption is removed by evaporation of COOLENT IN
water and acid in the column. The vapour being condensed is diluted
with 'makeup' therefore mostly removed via condenser. Concentration

and cooling of the liquid phase is assisted by evaporation of water to COLUMN

The arrangement of the absorber is common to all sizes in the range.

GAS IN
The gas is introduced into the column at a point below the packed

Gas Absorber - Falling Film Type

Hyderogen chloride feed gas is being allowed to enter from the inlet HCI GAS AT
provided on the upper end of ABSORBER. This gas falls down along with AMBIENT TEMP

the water inside the vertical parallel glass tubes. This arrangement COOLANT OUT
provides more effective absorption as cooling of dilute acid and
absorption of hydrogen chloride gas are taking place simultaneously. It
has got more solubility in water at lower temperature. In this way
ABSORBER work as a number of water cooled wetted wall columns in

Hcl Gas Generation (Calcium Chloride Route)
This plant has been designed by Super as a continuous process to produce dry HCl gas by Azeotropic Distillation of 30% hydrochloric acid
solution along with a co-current stream of calcium chloride solution.

A pre-heated steam of 30% hydrochloric acid solution and simultaneously a co-current stream of concentrated calcium chloride solution is
fed into the Azeotropic Distillation column. The azeotrope formed between HCl and water is broken by calcium chloride and as a result
almost all the HCl present in the solution is released in form of gas. The heat energy for the distillation process and the evaporation process
is supplied by steam via heat exchangers acting as thermosyphon reboilers. The vapour from the reboiler strips the available gas from the
feed acid solution in the column.

The condensation system at top of Azeotropic Distillation column consists of:

1. CW condenser cooled by cooling water
2. Chilled Brine Condenser cooled by chilled Brine.

The top product HCl gas is dried in the Sulphuric acid trap. 98% Sulphuric acid to be charged in the glass vessel which absorbs moisture form
HCl Gas The moisture content in the product HCl gas is expected to be less than 0.5%.

The bottom product is dilute calcium chloride solution with some traces of HCl content. The dilute CaCl2 solution is concentrated in the
evaporator and the re-concentrated CaCl2 solution is recycled to the distillation column via pump. Vapour liquid separator is provided for
separation of acidic water vapour and Concentrated Calcium Chloride.

The vapour from the evaporation process consists of water and expected to contain approx than 2-3% HCl. This water vapour is condensed
in the heat exchanger prior to discharge. Acidic Condensate is sent to the effluent through barometric seal pot.

All the wetted parts of the system are fabricated from corrosion resistant materials (Glass /PTFE) for the process conditions envisaged

Wiped Film Evaporator
The thin or wiped film evaporator is the ideal apparatus for
continuous processing of heat-sensitive, viscous and fouling
products. The key operating features consists of high specific
heat transfer, short residence time, low pressure drop and
operation under low vacuum. The highly agitated thin film feed
of product on heated surface, makes it suitable for handling wide
range of heat sensitive and viscous materials.
1.Drive Assembly.
2.Feed enters at top through feed inlet nozzle.
3.Rotating Distributor.
4.Disperses the feed evenly on to the heated wall.
5. Slotted wiper blades spread, agitate and move the feed down on
the heated shell in very short time.
6. Vapours are condensed in an external condenser and the
distillate is collected in the receiver vessel.

± Heating is done by heat transfer fluids circulated through the

jacket for evaporating volatile compounds under vacuum.
± The remaining bottoms stream exits the WFE and is collected in
product receiver flask.

Falling Film Evaporator

The falling film evaporator is particularly useful in applications
where the driving force is the temperature difference between the
heat transfer medium and the liquid is small. The combination of
short liquid retention time and the ability to operate at low delta T
makes the falling film evaporator ideal for concentrating the most
heat sensitive materials.
In falling film evaporators, liquid and vapours flow downwards in
parallel flow. Liquor is fed into the top liquor chamber of the heat
exchanger where it is distributed to each tube. The liquid will flow
downwards forming a thin film, from which the boiling /
evaporation will take place because of the heat applied by the
steam. The steam will condense and flow downwards on the outer
surface of the tube. A number of tubes are built together side by
side. At each end the tubes are fixed to tube plates and finally the
tube bundle is enclosed by a jacket. The steam is introduced
through the jacket. The space between the tubes is thus forming
the heating section. The liquor accelerates in velocity as it
descends inside the tubes because of the gravity and drag of the
vapour generated by boiling. The proper design of distribution
device at the top ensures sufficient coverage of tubes by
distributing the liquid evenly and uniformly over the tubes. The
remaining part enters the subsequent separator tangentially
together with the vapour. The separated concentrate is discharged
from the bottom of separator and the vapour leaves the separator
from the top. The heating steam, which condenses on the outer
surface of the tubes, is collected as condensate at the bottom part
of the heating section, from where it is discharged by means of
pump.
Advantages –
± No elevation on boiling point due to hydrostatic head.
± Short residence time of the liquid in the evaporator.

Nutsche Filter
The borosilicate glass/PTFE Nutsche filter is very useful for filtrations using acidic media. Neutsche Filters are widely used for the
separation of mother liquor and the solid product, in chemical, Pharmaceutical and other process industries. It can hold bigger quantity of
material and hence frequency of cleaning of the filter media is very less. The operating pressure is 0.5 bar and vacuum is used to speed up
filtration. The perforated filter plate is constructed from glass reinforced PTFE, the TOP AND BOTTOM cover is Glass Filled PTFE & PP cloth is
used for the filter membrane itself.
The filter cake can be discharged by simply pivoting the glass cylinder with the perforated filter plate. The design of the filter plate has
reduced the dead volume under the filter meaning these filters are especially useful for solid phase synthesis. Nutsche filters mounted on
wheels can be transported to wherever they are required.
