CATALOG DATA
Materials; classification, properties and applications. Atomic bonding and arrangements. Structural
imperfections. Determination of tensile properties, hardness and toughness. Atom movements and
diffusion in solids. Phase diagrams and some industrial alloys. Deformation of materials. Physical
properties. Non-metallic materials. Types of materials failure.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
The course is designed primarily for mechanical engineering students to introduce a background of basic
structural concepts and the relation between structure, properties and performance in engineering
materials. Emphasis on the topics will be selected according to the student group.

Chem 101
