Building

Catalogue
with LOD levels
MT HØJGAARD A/S - BUILDING COMPONENT CATALOGUE
2

Preface

The building component catalogue with the level of development specification is targeted at MT Højgaard's projects for internal use
and for our partners. The catalogue has been used on many of our own construction, civil works and infrastructure projects, but
also by external parties.

The motivation for this catalogue is that it is often unclear what geometry needs to be provided at a given milestone. The catalogue
is inspired by Level of Development (LOD) definitions developed by the American Institute of Architects (AIA).

The purpose of the catalogue is:

· to help participants in construction projects define the geometry of models;
· to help project participants clarify and specify geometry and property deliverables for a given milestone;
· to help project participants and partners communicate the geometry of the individual building component for a given milestone;

The catalogue may, however, be used by and be an inspiration to the construction industry as long as the source is acknowledged.
Copying or reproduction of this catalogue (or any part thereof) is not permitted without prior written agreement with MT Højgaard,
vdc@mth.dk.

This Building Component Catalogue is also published in Danish, Norwegian, German and Icelandic and will be updated on a
regular basis. We welcome comments and suggestions for improvements at vdc@mth.dk.

Reading instructions

This Building Component Catalogue describes how MT Højgaard defines the levels (LODs, Levels of Development) for the
geometry of selected building components.

For each building component, the levels of development LOD 100 - 400 are specified and described using an illustration showing
the recommended geometry and a descriptive text. LODs are ascending, where LOD 100 represents the lowest level and LOD
400 represents the highest level.

The Building Component Catalogue applies to 3D building models and 3D geometry.

On each project, the levels of development for the geometry of the individual building components in relation to e.g. conceptual
design, preliminary design and detailed design milestones can be specified in the Model Progression Specification for geometry
and properties. In that connection, the Building Component Catalogue will serve as a reference book.

Levels of Development (LODs)
MT HØJGAARD A/S – BUILDING COMPONENT CATALOGUE 6

Fundamental definitions of Levels of Development (LODs): LOD 100 and LOD 200

LOD 100 Definition

Object (or structure) is graphically represented in the model as volume objects. This represents the overall
geometric expression of the object and the relation to its surroundings.

Possible use
Overall energy considerations, price calculation on m2 or m3 (e.g. a car park for 300 cars), risk analyses to
determine the geometric design and layout of the construction site, including site huts, access roads and crane
location.

LOD 200 Definition

Object (or structure) is graphically represented as a generic object with assumed geometry.
“Assumed geometry means that the scale and location of building parts have been coordinated and illustrated so
as to form a basis for an overall space allocation. Configuration and location have yet to be established.” *
At this point, the model will be divided into a number of discipline models.

Possible use
Scheduling, safety planning, calculation based on areas (floors, façades, roofs, and functional areas), production
preparation, risk analyses, clash detection and energy calculations.

Phase
Typically conceptual design.

* Definition as per Ydelsesbeskrivelse for Byggeri og Landskab 2018 (Description of services for construction and landscape, 2018).
MT HØJGAARD A/S – BUILDING COMPONENT CATALOGUE 7

Fundamental definitions of Levels of Development (LODs): LOD 300 and LOD 350

LOD 300 Definition

Object (or structure) is graphically represented as a specific object with defined geometry.
“Defined geometry means that the configuration and location of building parts have been determined so as to
form a basis for a decision on coordinated solutions. Detailed and final processing as well as mutual coordination
are yet to be established.” *
Possible use
Production scheduling, calculation based on geometric or functional building components (m 2 of ground floor
slab, m2 of curtain wall, number of skylights, running meter of railing), lists of parts and clash detection.

Phase
Typically preliminary design.

LOD 350 Definition

The object (or structure) is graphically represented as an object with final geometry.
“Final geometry means that the configuration and location of building parts are detailed and coordinated so as to
form a basis for production preparation and construction without further mutual coordination.” *
Possible use
Production scheduling, calculation based on production parts, components and production material (m 3 of
concrete class, level of reinforcement, formwork, embedded parts), lists of parts, clash detection (coordination of
design and system deliverables).

Phase
Typically final design.

* Definition as per Ydelsesbeskrivelse for Byggeri og Landskab 2018 (Description of services for construction and landscape, 2018).
MT HØJGAARD A/S – BUILDING COMPONENT CATALOGUE 8

Fundamental definitions of Levels of Development (LODs): LOD 400

LOD 400 Definition

The object (or structure) is graphically represented as an object with final geometry. See definition under LOD
350.
The objects are detailed for prefabrication/manufacture and assembly – possibly with supplier-specific details.

Possible use
Prefabrication, lists of parts and the specific assembly or installation planning.

Terrain, existing

Existing terrain received from the client in the form of base maps or contour lines from the Danish Geodata
LOD 100 Agency for the area.

Existing terrain is displayed as a 3D surface, based on manual points measured by a total station or a rover.
LOD 200
Points are measured in height/depth and for each 10/20 meters.

Existing terrain is displayed as a 3D surface created by a network of measured points from e.g. an overflight
LOD 300 or a laser scan. Levels.

Existing terrain is displayed as a 3D surface created by a network of measured points from e.g. an overflight
