Walter Gropius designed the Konsum Building in Dessau, Germany between 1926-1928. The building consists of two interlocking volumes, a low-rise section and a 5-story tower, that blend together proportionately. The functional design emphasizes the block-like shapes of the volumes through a simple cubic architecture with constructional details. It served both commercial and residential purposes for the local cooperative society.
Gropius also designed the Temple Oheb Shalom in Baltimore, Maryland between 1958-1960. PROJECT DESCRIPTION • Modern suburban synagogue complex, located in an important cluster of post war synagogues in northwest Baltimore.
• A multi-functional building consisting of an
unornamented purism of elemental forms and proportions.
• The interior of the building retains many of Gropius
original design concepts.
• Significant both for the quality of its architectural
design and its. inclusion in a collection of important suburban Jewish properties. • Contains several significant works of art, including a pair of glass mosaic murals on opposite sides of the entrance lobby by Gyorgy Kepes.
• Its particular form derives from the suburbanization of
the Jewish population in Baltimore.
• The complex is a multi-functional building that
includes spaces for worship, social activities, administration facilities, and a school.
• Featured an innovative plan that placed the sanctuary
and social hall on the same axis to gather & seat over 2000 people.
• Its architectural distinction and historical significance
make this resource worthy of designation. THANK YOU !
