Class problems set on viscosity

1. A fluid with viscosity h fills the space between two long co-axial cylinders of radii
R1, and R2, with R1< R2. The inner cylinder is stationary while the outer one is rotated
with a constant angular velocity w2. The fluid flow is laminar. Taking into account
that the friction force acting on a unit area of a cylindrical surface of radius r is
defined by the formula

s = hr(𝜕w/ ∂r),

find:

(a) the angular velocity of the rotating fluid as a function of radius r;

(b) the moment of the friction forces acting on a unit length of the outer cylinder.

2. In the arrangement shown in Fig. a viscous liquid whose density is r = 1.0 g/cm3
flows along a tube out of a wide tank A. Find the velocity of the liquid flow, if h1= 10
cm, h2= 20 cm, and h3= 35 cm. All the distances l are equal.

3. A car windshield wiper blade sweeps the wet windshield rotating at a constant angular
speed of w. R is the radius of innermost arc swept by the blade. Length and width of
the blade are l and b respectively. Coefficient of viscosity of water is h. Calculate the
torque delivered by the motor to rotate the blade assuming that there is a uniform
layer of water of thickness t on the glass surface.
4. A viscometer (an instrument used to study characteristics of a non-ideal fluid)
consists of a flat plate and a rotating cone. The cone has a large apex angle and the
angle q shown in figure is very small (typically less than 0.5° ). The apex of the cone
just touches the plate and a liquid fills the narrow gap between the plate and the cone.
The cone has a base radius R and is rotated with constant angular speed w. Consider
the liquid to be ideal and take its coefficient of viscosity to be h. Calculate the torque
needed to drive the cone.

5. A cylindrical capsule can move inside a long vertical cylindrical tube filled with a
viscous Newtonian liquid. Diameter of the capsule is slightly smaller than the inner
diameter of the tube and walls of the capsule have negligible thickness. Drag force on
the capsule is proportional to speed of the capsule. If the capsule is empty, it rises up
with a uniform velocity v1, and if the capsule is completely filled with the liquid, it
moves down with a uniform velocity v2.
(a) Find expression of velocity of the capsule if h fraction of its volume is filled with
the liquid.
(b) How will the above relation change, if the h fraction of volume of the capsule is
filled with another liquid, density of which is k times of that of the liquid in the tube?
