Let Us Learn!
From the previous module, you have learned about the history, parts,
and functions of the microscope. In this module, you would develop more
appreciation as it would discuss the wonders of microscope.
Related photos and illustrations are provided for you to picture out
how microscopes are used. These visual aids could be easily understood and
explained in words. However, in case you have internet connection at home,
you could search related videos for more actual demonstration.
1
Let Us Try!
Now, you know the things you need to learn at the end of this module.
However, do you want to test your existing knowledge in handling the
microscopes? Answer these following questions honestly.
Multiple Choice. Choose the best option that answers the question.

A. Subtract the magnification power of the eyepiece to that of
objective lens
B. Add the magnification power of the eyepiece and of objective lens
C. Divide the magnification power of the eyepiece to that of objective
lens
D. Multiply the magnification power of the eyepiece and of objective
lens
B. D.

the total magnification of the image?
A. 50X C. 4X
B. 400X D. 30X
9. You are using the fine adjustment knob. What objective lens is set in
place?
A. Scanning objective
B. Low power objective
C. High power objective
D. Oil immersion objective
11. Where will you put your specimen before setting it on the stage?
A. Cover slip C. glass slide
B. Tissue paper D. lens

12. Which part/s of the microscope should the user hold lifting it?
A. Objectives C. Arm and base
B. Base and stage D. Eyepiece and base
15. When preparing a wet mount for study under the microscope, the user
must ensure that __________________.
A. A cover slip is placed over the specimen
B. A drop of methylene is added to the specimen
C. A drop of water is added to the specimen
D. The low power lens is above the object on the stage
Let Us Study
Knowledge-Check!
Do you still remember the functions of these parts of a microscope?
Before manipulating the microscope, you have to master these. In the
blanks provided, give the function of the following parts:
1. Stage _______________________________________________________________
2. Coarse adjustment knob ____________________________________________
3. Light source ________________________________________________________
4. Objective lens ______________________________________________________
5. Fine adjustment knob ______________________________________________
6. Stage clips __________________________________________________________
7. Eyepiece ____________________________________________________________
8. Diaphragm _________________________________________________________
9. Arm ________________________________________________________________
10. Base _______________________________________________________________
4
Now that you have mastered the functions of the parts of a
microscope, let’s advance your pace by learning how to view a more detailed
image of a specimen you want to examine under a microscope.
Let Us Practice
A. In terms of Position
5
B. In terms of Magnification
Complete the table by using the formula below.
Total Magnification = Eyepiece Magnification X Objectives Lens Magnification
Below are the images of letter “e” seen under a microscope with
different magnifications.
6
Let Us Practice More
At the end of this activity, you are expected to list down the steps of
using the microscope properly.

Guide Questions:
Let Us Remember
You just made a big progress! At this point, let us gather what you
have learned by doing the activities below.
Answer these!
How would the image appear in the microscope compared to the
position of the specimen? How is magnification calculated?

Fill in the Blanks
Find a clean and flat place where you can put the microscope during
experimentation. With clean hands, get a specimen you want to study and
place it in the (1) __________________. Put a (2) __________________ over it.
Place it on the (3)__________________ and secure it with the (4)
__________________ to keep it on place. Turn on your microscope then adjust
the (5) __________________ to regulate the amount of light. Among the
objectives, always start with (6) __________________. Look through the
eyepiece. Adjust the (7) __________________ until the image becomes clearer.
For higher magnification, use the (8)__________________. Use
(9)__________________ for more focused image. After using the microscope,
store it in a dust-free place.
I Do or I Don’t?
Write the word “DO” if the statement follows the rules about using a
compound microscope. If it is not, write “DON’T”. Write your answers before
the number.
10
When viewing a specimen under a microscope, the image would
appear upside down and backwards compared to what is seen in the glass
slide. The two (2) key features of microscope are resolution and
magnification. Resolution is the ability to distinguish two objects in an
image while magnification is the ability to make the image appear larger
than it is in real life. Magnification can be calculated by multiplying the
magnification power of the eyepiece and magnification power of objective
lens used.
11
Performance Task
Imagine yourself being in a science laboratory for your class. Your
Science teacher asked you to examine an onion under a microscope. You are
provided with the following materials: compound microscope, onion, glass
slides, cover slips, toothpick, tissue paper, water, and dropper.
If you were to study the onion in a microscope, what are the steps
you are going to do? What techniques would you employ to successfully
obtain important details about you specimen? Discuss your answers in the
box provided.
