Course Description:
This clinical course is a co- requisite to the theoretical part of adult and geriatric health nursing 2.
The course focuses on improving students’ skills in utilizing the nursing process and critical thinking
principles that enables students to provide the healthiest nursing care for their patients. During the
course, students will be exposed to a variety of experiences in the medical, surgical, cardiology,
neurology, orthopedic, oncology, kidney, and ear, nose, and throat units.

Course Specific Learning Outcomes:


Upon completion of this course, each student should be able to:
Knowledge and understanding:
- Identify indications for insertion of urinary catheterization.
- Identify factors that increase risk for catheter-associated urinary tract infection.
- Describe methods used to maintain integrity of the peri-stomal skin.
- Discuss indications for blood transfusion.
- Describe various transfusion reactions.
- Discuss the purposes of different orthopedic immobilization devices.
- Describe neurovascular assessments for a patient with an orthopedic injury.

Skills:
- Perform insertion of urinary catheterization.
- Perform colostomy care.
- Perform neurological patient assessment utilizing Glasgow Coma Scale.
- Construct nursing care plan of patients receiving blood transfusion.
- Construct nursing care plan of patients with orthopedic immobilization devices.

- Provide health teaching relevant to assessed data and patient needs following learning
principles.
- Demonstrate effective communication with patients and members of the multidisciplinary
team.
