your field of studies.

project, you must:

● Select a problem.
● Find supporting evidence for its
relevance.
● Write a short essay to defend your
selection.
Initial Discussion:
Individually, think of 3 problems of your
area of studies.

Share them in Mentimeter.

problem you hadn’t considered before.

Share with the class orally.

Save your ideas for later, they will be useful!

1 Reading: the problem with
globalization.
Task 1: Individual - Reading for Gist (2 mins)

Read the essay on globalization

very quickly.

What’s the problem with

Cultural Diversity in a
globalized world?
Task 2: Individual - Extended Reading (8 mins)

1. Based on the text, how would you

define cultural homogenization?

2. What are the problems tied to the use

of Social Media?
Task 3: Pair work - Identifying structures

Read the essay again. Discuss and answer the

following questions:

1. What sections can you identify in the text?

2. What information is provided in each section?

3. What words signal certain sections?

4. How are connectors used throughout the text?

The basic essay structure is like a sandwich. It is simple, yet
very effective to convey clear, organized ideas.
Look at your previous answers and the essay. In pairs, match
the components to the corresponding section.
Apart from the base structure, we need to consider some
aspects so the text makes sense. Do you know them?
Read these texts. What’s missing in each of them? coherence or cohesion?

1. “History shows that human beings have come a long way from where they
started. However, the technologies that are temporarily making this world a
better place to live could well prove to be an ultimate disaster due to, among
other things, the creation of nuclear weapons. For example, reliance on cars
causes air and noise pollution. Thus, people have become reliant on modern
technology, which can have adverse effects on the environment. Therefore,
this is the consequence of human encroachment on wildlife habitats, for
example deforestation to expand cities.”

2. “History shows that human beings have come a long way from where they
started. Humans have developed new technologies. Everybody can enjoy
luxuries they never previously imagined. The technologies that are
temporarily making this world a better place to live could well prove to be an
ultimate disaster. The biggest threat to the earth comes from the creation of
nuclear weapons. Another harm caused by human activity to this earth is
pollution. There is no doubt that current human activities such as the
creation of nuclear weapons, pollution are harmful to the earth.”
Your turn! (20 mins) In Pairs, choose one of the problems from the
beginning of the class and answer the following
question:

“Why is this problem relevant to my field of

studies?”

Collect ideas that support your view on the topic

selected. Feel free to search for sources of
information on the internet.

Then, organize your ideas in the essay format

reviewed in class. Use the attached outline form to
simplify the process.
