1. [4] Study Example 2.1.12, in particular, part (c). Then find all x ∈ R such that
2x − 1
≥ −2
4x + 3
2. [4] Study Example 2.2.6, in particular, part (b). Then find all x ∈ R such that
|2x + 3| + |x − 1| < 13

3. [4] Prove the following four lemmas.

Lemma 1: if x, y ∈ R and x > 0 and y < 0 then xy < 0.
Lemma 2: if x, y ∈ R and x < 0 and y < 0 then xy > 0.
Lemma 3: if x > 0 then 1/x > 0.
Lemma 4: if x < 0 then 1/x < 0.
Using the above lemmas (and the properties that we discussed in class) prove that ab < 0
implies either (i) a > 0 and b < 0 or (ii) a < 0 and b > 0.
4. [4] Assume that a, b ∈ R and a = b. Show that there exist an -neighbourhood V (a) of
a and an -neighbourhood V (b) of b such that V (a) ∩ V (b) = ∅.
5. [4] Assume that A, B ⊆ R are bounded above. Prove that C = A ∪ B is bounded above,
and that
sup(C) = max{sup(A), sup(B)}

6. [4] Assume that A is a bounded subset of R and that A is a subset of A. Explain why
A is a bounded set. Then, show that
inf(A) ≤ inf(A ) ≤ sup(A ) ≤ sup(A)

7. [4] Show that the set

n
S=  n∈N
n+1
where N = {1, 2, 3, 4, . . .}, is bounded, and find its infimum and supremum.
