General Instructions:
1. There are 35 questions in all. All questions are compulsory.
2. This question paper has five sections: Section A, Section B, Section C, Section D and Section
E. All the sections are compulsory.
3. Section A contains eighteen MCQ of 1 mark each, Section B contains seven questions of two
marks each, Section C contains five questions of three marks each, section D contains three
long questions of five marks each and Section E contains two case study based questions of 4
marks each.
4. There is no overall choice. However, an internal choice has been provided in section B, C, D
and E. You have to attempt only one of the choices in such questions.
5. Use of calculators is not allowed.

SECTION-C
26. What is a continuous charge distribution? How can we calculate the force on a point charge q
due to a continuous charge distribution?
27. State the rules to find the direction of force on a charge moving in a perpendicular magnetic field.
28. Figure shows a ray of light passing through a prism. If the refracted ray QR is parallel to the
base BC , show that

A convex lens of focal length 20 cm is placed coaxially with a convex mirror of radius of
curvature 20 cm. The two are kept 15 cm apart. A point object is placed 40 cm in front of the
convex lens. Find the position of the image formed by this combination. Draw the ray diagram
showing the image formation.
29. In Young’s double slit experiment, the separation of slits is doubled and the distance of the slits
and screen is halved. How will it affect the fringe width?

wave, show that the average energy density of the E field equals the average energy density of
the B field.

33. With the help of a circuit diagram, explain the working of a junction diode as a full wave
rectifier. Draw its input and output waveforms. Which characteristic property makes the
junction diode suitable for rectification?

SECTION-E
34. In practice, we deal with charges much greater in magnitude than the charge on an electron, so
we can ignore the quantum nature of charges and imagine that the charge is spread in a region
in a continuous manner. Such a charge distribution is known as continuous charge distribution.

There are three types of continuous charge distribution : (i) Line charge distribution (ii) Surface
charge distribution (iii) Volume charge distribution as shown in figure.

(i) What is the importance of Gauss law?


(ii) An electric charge of 8.85 # 10-13 C is placed at the centre of a sphere of radius 1 m.
calculate the electric flux through the sphere.
(iii) What charge would be required to electrifr a sphere of radius 25 cm so as to get a surface
charge density of 3 C m-2 ?

35. Ampere’,s law gives a method to calculate the magnetic field due to given current distribution.

According to it, the circulation Bv $ dlv of the resultant magnetic field along a closed plane
curve is equal to µ 0 times the total current crossing the area bounded by the closed curve
provided the electric field inside the loop remains constant. Ampere’s law is more useful under
certain symmetrical conditions. Consider one such case of a long Straight wire with circular
cross-section (radius R) carrying current I uniformly distributed across this cross-section.

(i) Find the magnetic field at a radial distance r from the centre of the wire in the region
r > R.
(ii) The magnetic field at a distance r in the region r > R .
(iii) A long straight wire of a circular cross section (radius a ) carries a steady current I and
the current I is uniformly distributed across this cross-section. Draw a graph which
represents the variation of magnitude of magnetic field B with distance r from the centre
of the wire?

distributed across its cross-section. Find the ratio of magnetic field at R/2 and 2R .
