6.0 DRAUGHTING PRACTICE

Technical Drawing development may use the software as detailed in Appendix C of this
Standard. When developing Technical Drawings, users of this Standard shall only
use international recognized standard abbreviation or those as defined in relevant Shell
DEPs and QP Addendums to Shell DEPs.

6.1 Standard ‘A’ Sizes

Drawings shall conform to the sizes specified in ISO 5457; nevertheless, for practical
reasons, sizes (full scale) shall be limited as shown in Table 1 below:
Table 1. Drawing Sizes
Size Paper Nominal dimensions (mm) Borders
(mm)
Width x Height
A0 * 1189 x 841 By default see 6.2
A1 841 x 594 By default see 6.2
A2 ** 594 x 420 By default see 6.2
A3 420 x 297 By default see 6.2
A4 210 x 297 By default see 6.2
Note: * In certain cases, the use of A0 size is essential, but this should be restricted as
far as possible to avoid handling and storing difficulties due to their large size.
** With exception of Isometrics A2 sizes are ‘Non-Standard’ in QP and can only
be used after approval of the Custodian (PTD) of this Standard. Refer to section
(3.0).

6.2 Drawing Borders and Templates

6.2.1 Standard Drawing Border Templates

6.2.1.1 Native versions (AutoCAD) of the blank drawing border templates in model space are
issued to CONTRACTORS/CONSULTANTS along with the Standard for each contract.
For QP In–House Work, these are available on QP Intranet under Engineering Services
Department.
6.2.1.2 The Standard AutoCAD templates have been created to ensure data is presented to QP
in a consistent and standardized manner.
6.2.1.3 These templates shall not be modified in any way. Exception here is to replace “Sht.
Con’t on” with “Sheet of” for Refining Operations - OM (R) Projects. This shall be
achieved by AutoCAD COMMAND “ED” to maintain the attribute.
6.2.1.4 The drawing borders are set to actual ISO Standard ‘A’ sizes and includes by default the
border spacing, title blocks (6.3) with standard attribute dialog box. The borders are by
default set in models space at base point 0, 0 (X, Y = 0, 0) to standard A size, see section
(6.1).

6.14.6 Scales for a particular details shall be shown below the detail i.e. Scale 1:1
6.14.7 Isometrics are not drawn to scale; nevertheless, shall be drawn sufficiently in proportion
to ensure clarity of any dimensioning.
6.14.8 Wherever possible, the same scale shall be used for all drawings forming a working
set.
6.14.9 The recommended scales for use on technical drawings are specified (refer ISO 5455)
in Table 7 below:
Table 7. Recommended Scales
CATEGORY RECOMMENDED SCALES
Enlargement 50:1 20:1 10:1
Scales 5:1 2:1
Full Size 1:1
1:2 1:5 1:10
1:20 1:50 1:100
Reduction Scales*
1:200 1:500 1:1000
1:2000 1:5000 1:10000
* Piping General Arrangement Drawings shall use scale 1:33 1/3 (1:33.3).

NOTE: If for special application, there is a need for a larger enlargement scale or a
smaller scale than those shown in table 7, the required scale shall be derived
from the recommended scales and applied in multiples of 10.
6.14.10 In exceptional cases where for functional reason the recommended scales cannot be
applied, intermediate scales may be chosen.
6.14.11 The scale to be chosen for a drawing will depend upon the complexity of the object to
be depicted and the purpose of representation. In all cases, the selected scale shall be
large enough to permit easy and clear interpretation of the information represented.
Users of this Standard should make use of the whole drawings space (drawing size
selection) to represent the scaled drawing content.
Doc. No.: QP-ENG-STD-018 Rev. 00 Date: 01/07/2019 Page 24 of 54
QP STANDARD FOR DEVELOPMENT OF TECHNICAL DRAWINGS

DOC. No. QP-ENG-STD-018 Rev. 00

6.14.12 Care should be exercised to choose the recommended scale such that a drawing
should be legible when printed on A3, with “Fit to Paper” option.
NOTE - To include larger area of the installation, appropriate lower scale (e.g. 1:100)
with continuation sheets shall be selected without compromising the legibility
of the drawing, rather than selecting higher scale (e.g. 1:200) to try to fit it into
the chosen sheet size.

6.15 Dimensioning

6.15.1 The use of intelligent AutoCAD dimension tools shall be used when creating
dimensions in drawings. These entities shall not be exploded.
6.15.2 Dimension style named “Standard” shall be used and shall be set to annotative.
Additional dimension style can be created when dimensioning in model space wherein
the “DIMSCALE” can be set to the intended plot scale.
6.15.3 Format for dimension style naming shall have a prefix of “STD” with the inclusion of the
plot scale used. For example, dimension style name of STD100 shall be used for
dimensioning objects in model space to be shown on the plot scale of 1:100. All unused
dimension styles shall be purged from the drawing file prior to final handover to QP.
6.15.4 There shall be no more dimensions than are necessary to complete the work.
6.15.5 Dimensions shall be given once only. Sufficient dimensions shall be given so that the
size and location can be determined such that the reader of the drawings does not need
to scale, assume or calculate the required dimensional values. If it is deemed
necessary to add reference dimensions, then these dimensions shall be indicated by
adding ‘(REF) ‘after the dimension.
6.15.6 Dimension lines shall be drawn in a position where they cannot be confused with the
subject.
6.15.7 Points to which the dimension lines relate shall be clearly indicated. Dimension baseline
references shall always be from the grid line, centerline, equipment edges, etc. to
identify the required length, width, height or spacing.
6.15.8 There should be a visible gap between an extension line and the feature to which it
refers.
6.15.9 Extension leader lines shall be used to show detail description relevant to the object.
6.15.10 All dimension figures shall be written immediately above and along the dimension lines
to which they relate so they may be viewed from the bottom of the drawing or the right
hand edge. They should preferably be towards the center of the dimension line and be
positioned clear of all other lines.
6.15.11 For broken dimension lines see Fig. 5
Figure 5. Broken Dimension Line

2971

6.15.12 Arrowheads shall take the solid form as shown in example Fig 5.
6.15.13 No drafting line shall cross a dimension figure.

6.15.14 All dimensions on a drawing shall use the same unit.

6.15.15 Pipe and valve sizes should be stated in the units used in the base documents, e.g.
inch units in the case of ANSI, API or other non-metric documents as well as
International System of Units (SI) units where applied in the base documents.
6.15.16 Dimensions of bolting for pipe flanges shall either be imperial or metric as required by
the piping specification. All other bolting details should normally be in metric.
6.15.17 Fractions of millimeters should be avoided. Obvious exceptions are machining
tolerances, sheet thickness and wire diameters.
6.15.18 Dimensions less than unity shall have zero before the decimal point e.g. 0.25. The
‘thousands’ shall not be marked or have a space left. Dimensions shall not have trailing
zeros, i.e. zeros after decimal points.

6.16 Continuation Layout Drawings

6.16.1 Layout drawings shall have proper match lines or boundary lines to show where to align
a large drawing that spans across two or more sheets. These match lines or boundary
lines shall be shown with its respective Easting & Northing coordinates to indicate its
drawing Limits or battery limits of the facility & the continuation drawing number. For
line type & layer, refer table for General / Multi-Discipline under APPENDIX A Layers &
Line Types.
6.16.2 Other than match lines, specific entity’s whose continuation is to be followed on another
sheet or drawing, the continuation drawing or sheet references shall be provided at the
relevant instance.

6.17 Multi-Sheet Data

6.17.1 Certain ‘data’ A4 and A3 size may consist of a large amount of sheets, of the same title
and consisting typically of:

6.18 Multi-Sheet Sizes

6.18.1 Multi-sheets are restricted to ‘Original Format” A4 and A3 size only. All sheets of a multi-
sheet set shall have the same size; mixing of different sizes in one multi-sheet set is
not allowed.
6.18.2 Drawing sizes above A3 may be used as Multi Sheet Sets but don’t fall under the
requirements of section (6.17) above i.e. No cover sheet or revision record sheet is
required. Examples of such drawings are location orientated drawings (Area specific),
UEFD’s, P&ID’s (Unit or System Specific), Single Line Diagrams etc., where in cases
the detail cannot be fully arranged entirely on one sheet the subject will continue on the
next sheet with proper cross references and demarcation points. The amount of sheets
contained in these sets should be kept to a minimum.

6.19 Multi-Sheet Sets

The multi-sheets sets for all sizes shall be arranged in separate sets for each equipment
package or system (in case of P&ID’s and the like) to enable additions to the package
or system as applicable.

9.0 CORPORATE ENGINEERING DATA CODING SYSTEM

The Corporate Engineering Data Coding System is defined in Engineering Standard ES-
0-07-0014 or 7J48N-00-69-00-401 for Refining Operations - OM (R) Projects. These
Standards define the drawing and document numbering of QP Technical Documents and
Drawings. All drawing and document file names shall be saved as the actual document
or drawing number.

9.1 Project Drawing Number

At start of a Project users of this Standard will be assigned a project identifier, which will
form the first part of the project drawing number. The remainder of the number shall be
allocated by the project/contractor/consultant in accordance with ES-0-07-0014 or
7J48N-00-69-00-401 for Refining Operations - OM (R) Projects.* This number shall
remain on the drawings throughout the project life.
*The Project Identifier will replace 7J48N when numbering Refining Operations -
OM (R) Project Documents and Drawing.
Note: Registration numbers of cancelled or superseded drawings or documents shall
not be re-used.

10.0 REVISION AND ISSUE REQUIREMENTS

10.1 Revisions General

10.1.1 Each drawing shall have an alpha or numeric revision code indicator, indicating the
revision status. Each numbered sheet shall have its own revision status indicator and
shall be changed whenever an approved alteration or modification is made from the
previous issue/revision.
10.1.2 When the available space in the revision block has been used up, (e.g., after revision D)
boxes B, C, D may be deleted to make room for E, F, G etc. Block 0 and A should not be
deleted.
NOTE: The letters I, J and O shall not be used and the Rev 0 (Zero) shall be used only
for the original issue (IFC).

10.2 Description of the Revision / Issue

10.2.1 The date and description of the revision or reason for issue shall be given in the identified
space within the Title Block. The first revision shall be listed on the bottom line and each
subsequent issue/revision indicator and issue/revision description will be identified on the
next succeeding line.
10.2.2 When the title of the drawing is altered it shall be mentioned in the revision description.
10.2.3 When a drawing number is changed, it shall maintain the same revision history and the
number change shall be identified in the revision description. This is not applicable when
creating a project drawing from background drawing. See Section (11.0).

10.3 Revisions to Multi Sheet Data

10.3.1 The revisions for Multi Sheet Data utilizing Cover Sheet and Revision Record Sheets
(See 6.17) A4 and A3 size, shall be for each sheet. Every time a sheet is revised, the
cover sheet and revision record index sheet shall be revised along with the particular
revised sheet(s). All the revised sheets shall bear the same revision indicator as the cover
and revision records sheet irrespective of the last revision indicator on the individual
sheet.
10.3.2 Where Signatures are applied for approval or checking purposes then only the cover
sheet and revision record sheet shall be signed. This will indicate approval or checked of
the sheets contained (or revised) within the multi sheet set.
10.3.3 Note that only revised sheets within the multi sheet set shall be issued and shall be
accompanied with its Cover sheet and revision record sheet.

10.4 Sequence of Revisions / Issues

10.4.1 For Refining Operations - OM (R) Projects refer to (10.4.10)

10.4.2 When creating drawings it will be necessary to carry out certain review issues in
accordance with the Contract requirements.
10.4.3 Each review will be monitored on the drawing by using a numerical revision code in
the revision box. Only when a drawing is approved for Construction (AFC) will it receive
an alphabetical revision code ‘A’. At this time all numerical revisions except Rev. 0
shall be deleted.
10.4.4 All projects involved in design and upgrade of existing plants (brownfield) shall use
revision code ‘Z’ regardless of previous revision to indicate project As-Built. Previous
revisions shall remain on the drawings at handover. (See 10.4.6 and Figure 7 below.)
10.4.5 In the unlikely event an As-built drawing Rev Z requires updating/revising then the
following revision indicators shall be used:
a) ZA - First change after Rev Z
b) ZB – Second change after Rev Z then ZC, ZD etc.
10.4.6 It shall be noted that three revisions including their description shall be constant;
namely:

10.5.2 To differentiate the Rev cloud from the cloud that shows the extent of the project, the
Rev cloud will use layer Rev 1 and cyan color. Scope cloud to be retained in As-built
drawings and all the Rev. clouds to be deleted prior to handover.
10.5.3 When a drawing is revised only the new revision cloud and associated revision triangle
(and Rev) should be seen. i.e. previous Rev Clouds and rev triangle shall be deleted from
the drawing.
10.5.4 All Rev. clouds shall be removed from the drawing when approved at, ADD, AFT, AFC
and As-built.

10.6 Drawing Review and Issue Requirements

10.6.1 The number of copies required, and the procedures for commenting, review and/or
approval, shall be in accordance with requirements of the contract and project
specification, which will be stated by QP.
10.6.2 Before any Technical Drawings are issued for review they must be checked and signed
by qualified personnel at the originating design source.
10.6.3 Technical Drawings issued for review shall be issued in logical batches sufficient in scope
and details to provide the recipient(s) with an overview, including interface, cross
referenced drawings of the package/topic or unit under review.
10.6.4 If Technical Drawings are issued with ‘holds’, the hold must be clearly identified by
surrounding the relevant area(s) with an inverted cloud. The cloud must refer to a note
on the document or drawing explaining the exact reason for the hold.
10.6.5 ‘Issued for Information’ shall be shown on the Technical Drawings issued for this
purpose.
10.6.6 The CAD Signatures shall only be added to the drawings when proof of the wet signed
drawing exists.
10.6.7 For drawings issued for Engineering Standards compliance checks refer to section (13.0)

11.0 THE USE OF BACKGROUND DRAWINGS FOR PROJECT WORK

11.1 General

11.1.1 There are two distinct methods of using background drawings for production of project
work. These are defined as below:
i) Reference shall be made to the original background drawing where the
BACKGROUND DRAWING either “Master Engineering Record or Project As-Built
Record” (See 11.3) reflects the same site/area or detail of the Project Scope and
is used to include scope requirements as an addition/deletion of the same drawing
type under project scope. (See 11.3)
ii) Reference to background drawing shall not apply where the BACKGROUND
DRAWING is only used as a template to aid the development of the Project
Drawing to include project scope requirements. As an example: The background
information is a typical detail or may include location background information to
be used in development of other discipline specific details on top of the
background related to the project scope.

Doc. No.: QP-ENG-STD-018 Rev. 00 Date: 01/07/2019 Page 36 of 54

QP STANDARD FOR DEVELOPMENT OF TECHNICAL DRAWINGS

DOC. No. QP-ENG-STD-018 Rev. 00

11.1.2 When selecting drawings of background information from other disciplines (as per item
ii) above) elements which do not have any valued addition to that specific discipline
drawing shall be removed to improve legibility of the drawing. e.g. Miscellaneous
bracings & members from structural drawings should be deleted when used to develop
other discipline drawings.
11.1.3 FEED drawings shall not be considered as background drawings for detailed design or
at EPIC stage. These are merely a continuation, update of the said drawing(s) which
may include use of different numbering system i.e. use of different project number. As
such the background drawing referenced on the FEED drawing shall be maintained on
the Detailed Design, EPIC Drawing(s). (See 11.3)
11.1.4 Master Engineering Records if available, shall be used for background information when
producing a project drawing. If the Master Engineering Record is not available, the latest
Project As-built drawing shall be used, if available.
11.1.5 If the above drawings are not available then users of this Standard shall create a new
drawing as per section (11.4).
11.1.6 It shall be noted that due to potential ongoing plant improvements, a Master Engineering
Record or Project As-built drawing does not necessarily accurately reflect the true site
status. Therefore, all drawings must be site verified prior to commencement of design.

11.2 Inserting Background Drawing Content (if used) into QP Standard Drawing
Border

When starting a project drawing with use of background drawing, users of this Standard
shall follow the following steps:
a) Open standard drawing border.
b) Scale the drawing border to that of the same scale of the background drawing.
c) Move the entire drawing detail of the background drawing into the new drawing
border. Ensure standard scale is used.
d) Select entire drawing content and change layer to “BACKGRD” (See Appendix A)
then create as a block named “BACKGRD”.
e) Use line type “continuous” and color “8-Grey”.
f) Update the Title Attribute dialog box to include Project specific title (See 6.3),
drawing number etc. see (Section 9.1)
g) Set drawing content to actual coordinates system (if GIS type)
h) Update drawing as per SCOPE with new entities of the project drawing (project
scope) prepared in accordance with QP standard layers. See Appendix A
Note: All original Background information including notes shall be maintained on the
Project Drawing unless it misleads to the distinctness of the new project scope.

11.3 Reference to the Background Drawing

When a background drawing is used (see 11.0) to create a project drawing, reference
must be made to background drawing and revision status from which it was made. This
information shall also be shown on the applicable Drawing Index. See example in Figure
10 below.

11.4 New Drawings

Newly developed drawings (No background drawing used) shall be indicated as such by
inserting a block in the drawing as in below example Figure 11.
Figure 11. New Drawing

NEW DRAWING

11.5 Highlighting the Project Scope

11.5.1 When a background drawing is used (see 11.0), for development of a project drawing,
the entire area of the project scope shall be clouded. This is to indicate, at a glance, the
extent of the work to be addressed and also indicates the updates to be addressed in
comparison with the background drawing when updating MER’s. Any revision indicators
shall be within this clouded area. This cloud shall remain on the drawing throughout its
project life.
11.5.2 Any subsequent revision indicators shall be shown within this clouded area.
11.5.3 A block shall be added to the drawing (See Fig. 10) to direct users to use the drawing
within the clouded areas only.
11.5.4 To differentiate the project scope cloud from a Rev cloud, this cloud will use layer
PROEXT and color yellow pen # 51. Refer Appendix A for details.

12.0 PROJECT AS-BUILT DRAWINGS

12.1 General

12.1.1 All project drawings shall be revised to reflect the 'As- Built' status after commissioning
using Revision indicator letter Z for Brown Field Projects and next available Revision
letter for Grass Root Projects, refer to (10.4). For Refining Operations - OM (R)
Projects this would be the next available sequence number as detailed in Section
(10.4.10)
12.1.2 As-Built drawings shall reflect final vendor information as well as all revisions of Red
Line Mark-up (RLM).
12.1.3 All temporary, Vendor or construction notes and references, revision clouds and Rev
triangles shall be removed before final As-Built is issued. Scope clouds shall remain in
place.
12.1.4 It shall be noted that all project Technical Drawings shall be certified ‘As-built’ regardless
of changes or not during the construction and commissioning stage and this status shall
be reflected in the applicable document and drawing registers. The drawings shall be
signed accepted as 'As-Built' by the following:
Doc. No.: QP-ENG-STD-018 Rev. 00 Date: 01/07/2019 Page 38 of 54

i) The Installation Contractor, when applicable

ii) The QP Authorized Site Supervisor in coordination with relevant QP Project
Construction Supervisor.
iii) The Relevant Project Engineer
12.1.5 It is the responsibility of the Installation Contractor, to ensure that the 'As- Built' Red Line
mark-up (RLM) is completed after the commissioning phase. One copy of the RLM (See
Note) shall be left with the QP’s Authorized Site Supervisor for maintenance purposes.
The marked up copies shall be inserted into the Project Dossiers as defined in ES-0-06-
0021 or 2500-00-69-101 for Refining Operations - OM (R) Projects after the original
project drawing has been updated and approved.
12.1.6 Unless otherwise specified by QP’s scope and contract requirements, one copy of the
'As- Built' mark-up (See Note) shall be returned to the original design source who is
responsible for updating the original project AFC drawing to reflect the 'As- Built' status
of the project involved.

Note: Due to possibility of drawings re-issued for construction there may be more than
one ‘As-built” mark up for the same drawing. In this case all mark-ups shall be
considered and actioned as above.
12.1.7 Unless otherwise specified by the project scope and contract requirements QP is
responsible for transferring the As-Built project information onto the Master Engineering
Record, should one exist. The next available revision indicator on the Master
Engineering Record shall be used to identify this work.

12.2 Demolition Drawings As-Built

12.2.1 Demolition Drawings shall be identified uniquely as per numbering system as defined in
ES0-07-0014 Engineering Data Coding System or 7J48N-00-69-00-401 for Refining
Operations - OM (R) Projects. i.e. drawing numbers are prefixed with DEM. Items,
equipment, structures, areas etc. to be demolished are identified by clouding the areas
to be demolished with cross hatch. These drawings shall be updated at As-built Stage to
indicate all actual items that have been demolished.
12.2.2 Demolition Drawings that show items, equipment, structures, areas etc. that still exist at
site shall cross refer to the actual As-built drawing number where the As-built details are
shown. i.e. these drawings will not show demolished items.

APPENDIX A: LIST OF LAYERS NAMES & LINE TYPES

General Notes for All Discipline:

a) The use of relevant set of layers of other discipline is encouraged. This will eliminate the
need to create additional layer(s) having the same layer description and purpose. For
example; if Mechanical Discipline requires showing a building outline, the Civil/ Structural
Discipline Layer should be used. Hence, there would be no need to list this layer under
Process Mechanical.
b) All X-Ref layout from other discipline used as background information can be changed to
Layer X-REF when creating drawings for the above discipline to emphasize the above
layers used.
c) All X-Ref from existing layout supplied by QP used as background information shall be
changed to Layer BACKGRD.
d) Refer Section (6.7) of this Standard for QP customised line-types. The proposed Layer
Names and Line Types as in Appendix-A shall be used. In case of a layer name, Line Type
not available for new entity type then Contractor to request QP for new layer name/s.
e) It is encouraged to use the short Layer Name as in this Appendix along with its short
description so that the layer names are more specific of its entity/entities.

ARCHITECTURAL / LANDSCAPING / BUILDING SERVICES

It is recognized that layering conventions for Infrastructure and Civil projects using discipline
code 9 - Architectural / Landscaping / Building Services (Refer to Engineering Standard ES-
0-07-0014 ) may originate from add-on application programs and layers are sometimes
automatically applied by the CAD programs designed for specific business applications. Due
to lack of practical standards, layer conventions are not further specified in this Standard for
this discipline. Accordingly usage of additional layers, line types, symbols and blocks may be
used. (See 7.9)
